Despite the loss of autocracy, perhaps the de Bar's will survive into the new century with these reforms. Eduoard would be proud.

Well good to see that there is also conservative readers in this thread. Too bad that we didn't see absolutism survive into 20th century. I fail to see what good could liberal goverment do for Grand Duchy.

And a socialist reader too. I will personally take care that there won't be a socialistic Burgundy. Liberal ideas are enough radical for Burgundy.

Nice African empire the Grand Duchy has. Should prove to be quite a nice base of resources when the time is right.

Still waiting to see those socialist liberal... vermin pulled from power. ;)

October 1898:
New ideas of State nationalism spread in Burgundy. More people now think that they are part of Burgundian Nation.
vic144lg3.jpg

World ranking:
vic145ch4.jpg

USA has passed also Prussians in industrial score.

vic146du0.jpg

Army:
vic147qv5.jpg

Burgundian land army seriously trails behind French and Prussians. Hmmm... let's hope that higher Burgundian overall military score prevents the war. Too bad that the new cabinet is so pacifist. This will definetely hamper Burgundian success in arms race. Actually things start to look very bad.

Navy:
vic148gz8.jpg

Atleast Navy is top of the line. Only British have better Navy.

February 1899:
Natural population growth 169,000, emigration 11,000.

Officers of Burgundian army are getting really pissed off. Recent changes in army funding (those damn pacifist radicals), trailing in international arms race and the new liberal constitution won't last long if officers will do something.

June 13, 1899:
France decides to take advantage of the ongoing Socialist Revolution and declares war on Grand Duchy.
vic150in1.jpg

This will be hard war to fight. Althought Burgundian mobilization will add 70+ divisions French will still outnumber Burgundians. Damn pacifists.

French keep on pushing easily through Burgundian lines. Situation, end of June:
vic151ap0.jpg

Note: French side is using new weapon, Gas! This is completely new to Burgundians and they don't even know how to defend against this new horrible weapon. Only choice is to run when ever they smell the awful stink of mustard. This really puts Burgundian side in trouble; not only outnumbered but also overwhelmed by new weapons. In the end it seems that Burgundians have lost the arms race of Europe.

French advances in North and South during July 1899.
vic152xb1.jpg

September 1, 1899
vic153yj0.jpg

First tries from Burgundian side to change the tide of war. If only Paris could be captured the war would end quickly. In the English Canal you can see landing of colonial forces called away from Africa to fight French in Europa.

Middle of September:
vic154uq5.jpg

More Burgundian operations. Will the Army of General Muriel ever get to Paris? It's so close but at the same time so far away.

You are so dead now. You should have changed far earlier. Right now you're stuck with a crappy economy and pacifists in a war. I just wonder how the French can pay all these troops, don't they destroy their own economy with it?

Damn! Things look pretty grim for the Grand Duchy. I cannot recall, do you not have any allies to be of some assistance?

Burgundian economy is strong enough. No problem there. Even the conduction of massive mobilization of 70+ divisions don't hurt that much. The pacifists make the war impossible:
1) there was no extra manpower when mobilizing (of course I was full military spending at the moment) - on the contrary I lost my reserve ~50(IIRC)manpower points. (I should have used those 50 MP _before_ hitting the mobilization button - not after it, well this is the first war that I have fought with pacifists leading a country)
2)I'm not allowed to turn any extra pops to soldiers.

Only allies are Lombardy and Venezia. They are sending troops to assist in the war but it's something like 5 divisions all together. If Burgundy loses the war you can be sure that it's also the end of Venezia and Lombardy.

Damn those French! Seems that you control the waves, though, with the superior fleet you built. But so many French divisions...
Yep no problem there the whole French coastline is raided, bombarded and blockaded by Burgundian Navy

Wenis said:

That's Grand Duke's number two concern, (number one being the war that isn't going that well.) The ongoing mobilization dropped the Burgundian military score(213) behind Prussian one(218). Hopely one thing is sure in the diplomatic front: If French and Prussians are going to divide Burgundy British will intervene. That's propably the reason why Prussians haven't acted yet. Althought moving the Burgundian troops away from Prussian border would propably lead to similar "peace keeping" action from Prussian side that Burgundians did May-July 1858 during the Great Anglo-French war.
