Having played 30-odd years of the GC, I have to say it's a marked improvement. VERY happy with the new peace resolution process and the new diplomatic options. Also I love how the costs of diplomacy are scaled to the size of the target country (it's seems? haven't bothered to read the manual yet).
One strange thing:
Why are Byzantium and Novgorod playable for the GC? Byzantium was overrrun by Turkey in the 1453 and Novgorod absorbed by Muscovy... so why can't I play Muscovy? Especially since Muscovy becomes Russia, not Novgorod.
Anyway Byzantium and Novgorod would be nice "fantasy" options, but relaistically the "histroical" GC should not have Byzantium playable (maybe Japan instead?) and should have Muscovy instead of Novgorod.
Otherwise no complaints, only high praise... even though my ships seem to be able to quite happily use enemy ports
