Anybody have any clever Granada strategies?

So far the best thing I can come up with is to take Morocco's southernmost province and sell my Iberian land. Then take exploration and escape to the Americas.

I used to have some tricks to ally France and stay in Europe, but for whatever reason, the numbers no longer add up. I wouldn't say it's impossible, but it is infeasible.

Anyone have anything better?

When I did it in 1.7 I no-CB on Ethiopia and got access through Mamluks, I'm not sure if they ally early now or not, but one of the other little guys there probably won't.

If Aragon attacks Navarra and brings in Portugal, it is possible, if difficult, to win a war against castile where you instigate rebels to flip provinces to you (the Andalusian ones) and then take more, but it's kind of hell. In that case you'd leave a couple guys sieging and kill armies as trained while avoiding andalusian land. Rebels WILL break you into being Christian with that strat; you don't even get a choice, but that allows you to ally France. It's easy after that.

India probably still works too provided you can find someone diplomatically isolated, same with East Africa.

Sounds like you favor going East over West.

Sounds like you favor going East over West.

Can Granada usually survive until colonization is viable? Or is going west a "restart first decade a dozen times till things work out" kinda deal?

Also recall that colonized provinces are nerfed to hell with LA, so the value proposition of going west seems rather diminished. If I was going "west", I'd do it in conjunction with leaping my capital into W or SW Africa to benefit from CN formation.

I found it faster to power spike by grabbing middle east and beating Ottomans to Mamluks, but that was 1.7:

But anything where you survive will work. The main advantage East has is that you can do it immediately. With Sub-Saharan Africa being buffed, you'll probably have a slightly harder time taking out Ethiopia (though I kind of cheesed them in 1.7 even), but there are smaller guys to cut down first. That area has the advantage of declaring on something off-religion, limiting coalition from no-CB, which is why I picked it.

With 1.8 crushing my performance my will to experiment isn't there for now. I will catch up soon enough once it's fixed, if that happens.

I haven't had too much trouble surviving. I learned the hard way to sell Granada after the first war or castille will let you sit on 20 WE forever. My strat was to become an OPM protected by Tlemcen and Tunis ASAP.

I'm gonna experiment going east now.

You have 4 2-3 province minors in central north Africa. You could try to gobble them up, Fezzan even has a port so mil access not required. Will need to find a start with friendly Mamluks though. My Morocco game started hard because the Mamluks didn't want an alliance before Portugal wanted Tangiers

If you stay in NA, Castille/Spain will never stop attacking you. All potential allies are either too weak, or unable to properly deploy their forces to help you. I had a game that went to 1530 before I quit. I managed to consolidate Morocco, Tlemcen, and Tunis and westernize, but I still couldn't fight off the Iberian hordes. You never get enough time to properly recover.

I quit after a particularly long and annoying war that left me with 20 WE, many times my FL in rebels (almost all in mountains), no manpower, and no money. I concluded that was not the best strategy.

Has anyone had a chance to come up with something fully workable in 1.8? I just tried the fleeing to India route, I was able to no-CB war on Sind and take all their provinces, but Castille still hasn't declared on me in 1455, so I can't core any of the Indian land. And since India is overseas, I'm stuck with it all at 75% LA and unable to raise it, so I'm now about to lose all the land to rebels, because my 5 FL can't compete with 3 5 stacks and a 10 stack of rebels that just popped.

I'm almost done with my run. I'll post screenshots here when I'm done. I had the same problem with lazy Castille. I just DOW them and offered Granada in the peace deal. I can't remember how long it took. The AI gets uppity when "wants to annex," "wants concessions other than gold," etc.
