Grammar in Paradox products.

For example, this line is in the release notes of a patch for EU2:

"Several spell mistakes have been fixed."

I hope the guy who wrote it didn't actually correct those mistakes.

Isn't the accuracy of ENGLISH translation, spelling and grammar the responsibility of the game's AMERICAN or ENGLISH (UK) publisher?

That would be Strategy First.... an English-speaking company based in Canada as well as London. Well ok, so they are in Montreal, maybe they speak French too.

Still.... I dont think the blame is really fair to peg on Paradox, which is clearly a Swedish developer. Rather the responsibility for this should fall on whomever publishes the game in the USA, UK or any other English speaking country.

That depends on the agreement between Paradox and their distributors and how the texts are implemented into the game.

Most probable actually, it is the responsibility of Paradox.

But we are supposed to be the *ahem* intellects here.

And I happen to have embarked on a crusade to rid all my fellow Scandinavians of all "loose"s and "hole"s when describing "lose" and "whole". Come to think of it, "it's" instead of "its" too.

And to all real English speakers, it's "might have" something, not "might of" something!! Kids these days have absolutely no respect to language discipline!

We could have a Redneck translation that is only used when you play the CSA too.

So why not convert the text file to MS Word and run spell and grammar check? They arn't the best but they do underline areas of "interest".

I'd like to get back to the original suggestions on how to fix this. I don't think there's any need to worry about elitism; this is a polished product in many ways and this is simply one more layer of polish. It's certainly no more elitist than, say, bickering over the details of the Hundred Years War or South German culture, and since these are fair debates, I'd say that's not elitist at all. After all, it isn't 'grammar bad, go to hell, all of you!'

It's 'what can we do to fix this,' in the grand tradition of Paradox games. Several people have volunteered. It is a lot of text, but some of it is better than none of it. Perhaps a couple additional betas could be brought on board with specifically that responsibility? Again, I'd do some of it if I were sure it would be incorporated, but I don't want to waste my time (or anybody else's).

If it isn't incorporated officially (with restriction on language in patches and such), it could still be done quite a nice "mod" if done properly.

I'd volounteer; my English is decent (perhaps a bit Norwenglish, but so be it), and I'm fond of having opinions about language stuff

We could set up a thread somewhere, divide the languagefiles/content between us and see if we can put something together, provided we manage to get proper QA on it.

That's a good suggestion. I'd volunteer too. Language is one of my strong interests.

Victoria, as any other Paradox title, is done in English, I doubt there even has been a Swedish version after EU.

I have played games with far more grammer mistakes and a lot lower diction levels then this manual. Then again, I have barely picked up this manual because I dove head first into the game.
