GPU hotter than the desert sun!

Hi chaps, I really hope there is some simply explanation for this. Current system is MSi Laptop, Intel Core i7-2630 QM; Nvidia GTX 560M/1.5 GB GDDR5; 16 GB RAM - Surely a game like Crusader Kings2 shouldn't be overheating my GPU????

I am playing sykrim on high/ultra settings and CK2 comes in at 15 degrees hotter after 10 min of gameplay - wtf!! I might be guessing, but i only noticed it getting really hot and the fan going nuts after the last 2 patches, does that have anything to do with it? If i could roll back the patches i would but i am playing on Steam which auto-updates. Any settings i can tweak with to see if it taxes my GPU less? It just doesn't make sense to me because surely the GPU requirements and load on skyrim is going to be much higher than the Map interface of CK2...?

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated, thanks

Believe it or not but PI's data-intensive games do actually use the GPU more strenuously than action graphic-intensive games. Partially this is due to the game using the GPU to process data as well as draw the screens.

That said it certainly shouldn't be driving it to meltdown point. What actual temperatures are you seeing, on CPu and GPU? We have had people report that updating their video driver helped, and of course you need to check all your fans are working and no vents are blocked. That aside you may need a specific utility to regulate your fans better, such as SPEEDFAN.

As AndrewT said, The Clausewitz engine offloads some calculations to the GPU to speed up the game (iirc that was one of the rasons they switched to 3D graphics).

many thanks for getting back to me. guys, I never wouldve guessed its using the gpu too to process date. My GPU temp is at 85 degrees after 10 min, not sure how to measure the CPU temp....
Thanks for your advice on SPEEDFAN, im definitely gonna check it out.

simple solution............ limit the FPS, by using a programme like dxtory. i limit mine to 30fps, runs versy smooth and never hear the fans on my gtx 460.

I have the same problem.
My GPU is overhating just staying on the menu screen (75% usage of the GPU, temp up to nearly 85°C). I just bought the game and i don't want to fry my graphic card.

is there's a way to limit framerate in settings.txt (other than installing a weird third party program) ?
I'm a bit disappointed.

There is no way within the game, no.

But why don't we try treating the problem rather than work around it? Your hardware shouldn't run that hot regardless of what the game is doing.

Are all fans running OK? Video driver up to date? All vents not blocked by dust or physical objects?

The fans and all the sink are clean and ok.

I don't have problem on any other game.
i tried to turn off trees and water and sky but my GPU is still used like if the game try to choke it (although my cpu is barely used i can't figure out why the game has to consume all my GPU ressources while i'm still on menu screen)

Does the game work well for you ?

if yuor FPS are over 100, you need to force a limit on them

I tried to enable Vsync directly from nvidia 3D management.
But still the same.

Why don't they implement an option for that ?
As i saw on the forum i'm not the only one who have this issue.

as a general rule people like super FPS.
if nvidia 3D management doesnt work. use a 3rd party system

My FPS by the way was 60 when i tested it. Such a pity the game cooks my gpu while other games are fine...:sad:

85oC shouldnt be outside your laptops comfort range, BUT what speed were you running it at? Are your days a kind of blur?
Any laptop cooler?
Have you tried running at reduced speeds?

Not sure how to adjust the running speed or reduce it? No blury days at all.
Maybe dropping the resolution might make a difference?

Alright, I'm reporting this issue to the developers. Can EVERYONE experiencing overheating and/or excessive fan usages report back with just the following in a post:

1/ CPU and GPU temps (specify C or F please) before the game starts, and again when the symptoms kick in
2/ fps before the game starts and again when the symptoms kick in (FRAPS or Rivatuner can do this)
3/ Exact video hardware; either right-click on your desktop, go to screen resolution | advanced | adapter and paste in here what's after Adapter Type, OR paste in the two lines "Card name" and "chip type" from dxdiag.txt
4/ the exact video driver version in use; either right-click on your desktop, go to screen resolution | advanced | adapter | properties | driver and paste in here Driver Date and Driver Version, OR paste in from dxdiag.txt the three lines Driver File Version, Driver Version, and Driver Date.

Can you please check in your nVidia software whether VSync is disabled? If so please enable it and try the game again. Thank you.
