Got to the first major story mission (the Argo one) and the game hates me.

My commander pilot got injured because I was stupid and got them injured, so I ended up using everyone else and the starting mechs, which was a big mistake because the Spider and Locust both got destroyed when the pirates showed up and then I got demolished by the leader.

What the hell am I doing wrong? I have like 600k cbills and I don't want to go bankrupt from the stupid monthly payments, it's bad enough that I have to wait 100+ days for my commander to heal and that might drain my bank. I don't want to hate this game already.

You can retreat if you're in danger. Its ok to retreat. Its ok to eject too. The last thing you want is to play a mission until your mechs get downed or pilot seriously hurt, so win carefully minimizing damage.

I had a true oh shit moment in this one the final battle and I had my commander in a up armored Shadowhawk with minimal damage dfa'd failed to take down the target the other remaining enemy mech moved up and headshot my mech!!!!! Only damage the mech had taken other than leg damage from dfa.... awesome:) My commander is now out of action for 140 days! No more mech piloting for him:)

Will the enemy mechs/vees/turrets etc respawn or can I just quit without worrying about that?
If its a random mission its ok, just take a different mission. If its a story mission, dont take it until you've leveled up enough and amassed equipment that will help you in it. There are infinite missions, though you may need to go to a new planet once the current ones are gone because they take time to respawn missions.

So basically I shouldn't have made a beeline straight for the Argo recovery mission because I have a garbage loadout? I have a Spider, Locust, Vindicator and Shadow Hawk and my starting Blackjack is still under repair.

It would depend on familiarity with the tactics and mechanics ect. I can use that lance there, but I wouldn't recommend it for everyone to keep going in the story with it.

The Spider is tricky to handle. If you're having trouble at least try to salvage a few mechs from random missions to replace that one with something more forgiving. And level up your pilots some.

You probably shouldn't have, no. But it's learning by doing here, and unless you go bankrupt you can always try to recover from any loss, no matter how severe.

The only way to fail the game is to go bankrupt.

On the bright side, the story missions don't have much randomness in them, so next time you know what to expect and what (not) to bring in order to succeed. Practice makes perfect! (although it might get very expensive...)

This last note is the most important one - and helped me out the most. You can also reload the game, as it autosaves at most of the major points (negotiations, missions, events). I'd go back a step and do a couple other missions, give you CO time to heal and time for the BJ to get repaired.
