Playing as Milan and Savoy decided to DOW me. My ally Hungary decides to take over and promptly does nothing. I'm the one that fights Savoy yet I can't negotiate term because that whole "Target of a wargoal" thing applies if YOU are the wargoal too. So I end up capturing all of Savoy's provinces just so Hungary (who still hasnt done anything) can get the peace deal. I don't know if it's broken or the way Paradox intended but it still sucks.

When I am not the war leader I perform the following in a non-committed way :

- Defend my or my allies' territorial integrity
- Giive support to my leader's troops to gain some Prestige and Tradition
- Loot my enemy's provinces
- Besieges provinces I have a claim on or that I want to snatch away
- Find ways to go over 10% war score to settle for a separate peace either for money or Prestige
- Seek to weaken a Rival's troops or naval forces

I do wish that you got to choose when to call in your allies, sounds like in this case you were able to handle business on your own. So let me have the option.

Did you have the option to uncheck "Let the AI negotiate for me"?

Do you guys not read, or do you enjoy going off in tangents.
He was the wargoal but lost leadership of the war.
So he can't negotiate separately, and he is more or less forced to keep fighting until the AI leader decides to make peace, at which point it's that AI that's likely to reap any/all benefits that arise from the war.

Seriously, Paradox should never have gotten rid of the "player never loses war leadership" mechanic.

Don't ally with significantly larger powers and you won't have that problem. If you need to for survival then do as Drakken said, keep your stuff clear and either help your side win so you might get something out of the deal (I've gotten returned cores several times, especially in cases where the leader doesn't have good options for land grabbing) or otherwise mail in the war. If you're hiding behind the neighborhood bully's skirts why should you get to reap the rewards?

I don't personally face difficulties with the mechanic, but that doesn't stop me from recognising a silly mechanic.
Until there is a proper "war contribution" mechanic, the AI should not be trusted to handle negotiations, especially in a defensive war where the human player is the wargoal target (and hence the target of most action).
If anything, the war leader should stay with the human player, and AI allies should not contribute much to the war (much as a human player generally won't contribute much to wars of AI allies).

Because of the realism of say the Palatinate negotiating for France? Not saying I don't agree it can get into a frustrating situation, though personally I'"ve not yet had any qualms with it, but the logic behind I agree with. The AI should perhaps be made smarter in that regard, being more liable to get benefits for you as well, as in releasing cores or claims to you, perhaps depending on how much they like you etc. I've never had the AI releasing anything to me, then again in a defensive war I never really expect them to.
