Arumba, he is constantly posting new vids, so you can guarantee within a few hours of the expansion hitting he will have new videos up. Some older videos and his learn EU4 series will still be very helpful. Many of the basics will still be the same.

Welcome to EU4! It's f"in amazing!

Oh, I'm not new at all - I got EU4 right when it came out. I just haven't played much, so I'm not very good. I have 310 hours logged but I'm sure I've probably idled a few times. But thanks anyway!

So it sounds like a lot of votes for Arumba; and Quill to a degree but to not be surprised if he makes some mistakes/isn't the greatest. I think I'll start with Arumba and if I don't like his videos for whatever reason I'll watch some of Quill.

Thanks for everybody's assistance! Definitely looking forward to Art of War tomorrow :).

I can't recommend DDRJake to anyone learning the game. He thrives on finding unconventional ways to use game mechanics in advantageous ways that clearly weren't intended, and some of his more - exotic - strategies, have a way of disappearing or becoming less beneficial as the game gets patched.

True. Some of his strategies are very advanced, and game patches make some unusable. But he is also a very good all-round player, knowing how to fight wars to his advantage, deal with coalitions and so on, without using very advanced gameplay.

I'd say try all of them and see which one you like the most. With the nature of most EU4 LPers you'll be able to learn plenty and probably be of best doing so with the one that entertains you most.

All of the ones frequently mentioned here have their habits and quirks which you may or may not like. If you look at the 1st lp in a series of them you'll get an idea of whether they suit your taste.

On the topic of whether now is a good time? I would recommend waiting a few days for sure. A lot of the LPers are quite active and I'm sure all of them will be going at it when Art of War comes out. The game is bound to feel quite different when it does come out so you may aswell relearn the game with them. On that note, if you're in the right timeframe you can easily catch DDRJake & Shen streaming. Jake answers a lot of questions too.

The game changes so often, it's hard for you tubers to post content that stays relevant.

I don't recommend the "Let's Play Blah" series, the few that I watched seemed out of date.

I enjoy this dude https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb0nYH5M0yHSqdB6faFGz-Q he is from Portugal so sometimes he struggles a bit with english and how to say what he has on mind... and sometimes he plays a tad slower :), but has great knowledge of rules and you can learn a lot from him

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll take a closer look here later on - his accent is pretty understandable luckily so I don't think that'll be a problem if I want to watch more of him.

I watched through one of Arumba's newest Let's Plays: his 1.8 Brandenburg game. In just the first 20 minute video I've learned three things... didn't know who sent the royal marriage invite mattered, and I didn't know embargoing was so worthwhile... I guess I just never thought or cared to do it. Also I'd have never noticed that little mark in the movement arrow for river crossing. Definitely going to keep up with Arumba's 1.8 game. Plus I'd like to play Poland so since it's in the same geographical area maybe I'll pick up some things pertinent to that region.

Quill18 for really basic tutorial. DDRJake for everything else. He is the most thoughtful EU4 youtuber. He likes to do strange things (he mostly into it) but his commentary on basis/advanced gameplay is a gem.

Just noticed Arumba is doing an AoW Brandenburg ( I unsubscribed because he was just coasting through lots of games and it all became quite mechanical ) I've started as Brandenburg so it'll be an interesting comparison.

I like Quill's presentation and humour and although he too is a bit min/max for my taste he still makes 'human' decisions and therefore there is more narrative to his games following 'mistakes' or less than optimal outcomes.

Definitely recommend Arumba, he's very genuine about what he does and knows the game pretty darn well. He makes the occasional stupid mistake but I find him less frustrating to watch than Quill who makes more mistakes (which is fine for the beginner of casual viewer but as soon as you start to figure things out, the errors become really frustrating).

And also Arumba uploads a ton of content very regularly.

Absolutely, just watch DDRJake. Second best thing to playing as France.

Quill's audience is quite nice, he also knows how to make tutorials.

Shenryyr is enjoyable to watch, if not a bit too childish at times. Even though primarily a streamer, does show the minimum amount of effort to respond to his comments. Which many don't bother.

Arumba loves micromanagement, analyzes too much, often manages to miss the point. Has an awful fanbase, but he uploads regularly and knows Eu4 well enough. Also uses his keyboard shortcuts, Which I absolutely love.

Alfapiomega also explains mechanics constantly.

Marco Antonio and AlexLifeson are primarily HOI LP'ers but also are quite good at EU4.

That's all I can remember.

In my opinion the best way is to read the wiki/forum and figure out how mechanics work and how you can exploit them and then build from there. Once you have a big of tricks that work for your playstyle you have something to build on.
