Good Norse name for Ireland?

Came up with this after discovering that Oy is Norwegian for Island and Ireland in Irish Gaelic means Prosperous Green, so I looked for what Prosperous means in any Scandinavian and I got Velstand. So Velstandoy was the natural course of action, but if any of you speak any of the lovely Scandinavian languages, have I done this right?

The Norse had a tendency not to call large islands "island", but rather just "land" (e.g., Island, Gotland, Graenland, Markland...though they honestly may not have known the last two were islands)

Honestly, I'd argue that Graenland is a good one for Ireland. Or, you know, Irland.

Well it means "land of the Irs". Naming countries isn't usually very creative. Here we have a land filled with English people, let's call it... England. Here we have Deutsch...

Well, true, the "land" part does indeed mean "land". I guess I just meant that it doesn't mean anything like "prosperous green".

Yes, my point exactly. Countries tend to get named (at least in Europe) by simply stating who lives there.

Velstand is a later German lone word. Also, oy may be Norwegian for island, but the Vikings didn't speak Norwegian, but Old Norse, it's precursor. Island in Old Norse would be ey. However, I do suggest using -land, seeing how Ireland is bigger than just any island.
There are several Old Norse names for prosperity. Fé means livestock, and was a kenning for wealth. Auðr directly means wealth or riches.
So my suggestions are Féland, Auðaland, and regular old Írland.

Partial to Auðaland for Ireland though. I think I'm going to steal it for my own games.

I'm by no means a linguist, and I can't seem to find any translators, but I know that Icelandic is similar to Old Norse.

Lesser Britain is good imho.

Minna Bretland in Icelandic/the closest thing I have for Old Norse.

Also, No Snake Land, which is Engin höggormi Land. (Maybe Engin-höggormi)

I'm not sure.

Graslendi is another good one. (Grass land in Icelandic)

Írland if you're being accurate. It's nice because a few provinces and titles will be renamed automatically. My native county 'Ulaid' becomes Strangfjord which is where my parliamentary constituency and my home region Strangford comes from!

The name you've chosen is fine but the Norse knew the names of the places they went too. The Danes did not rename England when they conquered so it's unlikely a Norse ruler ruling Èire would go against the grain completely.

Then again fudge history and pick an awesome name, if Norse rulers are for anything it's dynamic realm names.

Wales is actually a very Germanic name, meaning those who are not Germanic (*walhaz is Proto-Germanic). The same element is also found in Wallonia and Cornwall. The Old Norse form of Wales would be Valiland.

That would be Vestmannaland, in the genitive.

I've renamed my Norse Ireland as Hinterland. It makes sense, it's German, and it describes the place a little bit. It's the land behind the land (england/scotland/wales).
