Do you recommend any nation in India that is interesting to play? I was surprised to see after the fleshed out India dev diary that there weren't many new nations with unique ideas if any at all, aside from two group ideas of course. I was thinking of Bahmanis but quit since it was a little too big in the beginning.

My favourite in that region is Nepal. They are Hindu and get the personal deities and stuff, are rather small, and have really strong military ideas. Can't say for sure how they play under the new patch, but I really enjoyed playing them before.

2. Vijayanagar (land based Hindu power in the South)
3. Juanpur (land based Muslim power in the North)
If you want a challenge take the likes of Mysore, Kathiawar, Ceylon, Nepal etc.

I hear being Shiite is part of fun Gujarat gets.That said, I only played Kathiawar, which is Hindu and shares the idea set with Gujarat.

Yeah, but a Shiite being surrounded by Sunnis is more fun than a Sunni among lots of Sunnis..
Nepal just got re-buffed! For the first time we get to play them with both decent military ideas and Hindu deities. Or you can play Jaunpur for its new ideas and DHEs, and make Nepal a march...but it sounds like you want something smaller than Jaunpur.
Orissa's a fun trade coastal trade power -- with its ideas and positioning, you can dominate the coasts/islands of Asia and make a pretty penny off of production + trade.

I had a pretty great game in 1.7.3 as Vijayanagar -> Hindustan (I wouldn't form Hindustan again, as I like Vijayanagar's colour too much). I'd recommend that. Even once you're supreme in southern India and are pushing north, there's still the hordes in/from the north to consider, but you're also in a good position to colonise Indonesia as well as being a major land power.
I had a fun time playing Assam in 1.7.3, but I can't imagine that being a smooth start. Probably not for everyone. Assam does have a really cool color to paint with, though.
