Hello everyone, i hope you people are having a good day (if it night then i hope you having a good night) I loved hearts of iron, played 1 and 2. I been playing hoi 3 just now it like i cant make up my mind. I want to like play all historical but i also want to conquer the world. I dont know what to pick and im sorry people, but cant pick any nation. I pick USSR, then think gosh this is too big (that what she said) try USA but like i need lots of ships for japan. So the main point is, which country should i be? And what settings should i have it on? Btw same with the ww1 mod, who should i be? Really want to also do a AAR too! Have a good day everyone!

If your goal is to play historically-ish and still WC your only real options are Germany, USA, USSR, Japan, or *maybe* Italy if you're ok with being a junior partner.

With sufficient abuse of the game mechanics (stealing what your war partners conquer, attacking neutral countries while not being in a faction, etc.), you can do a World Conquest with just about any country. Playing "rationally", it's only possible with a short list of countries, as MarxianTJ says.

Germany is the "default" choice, because a lot of the events and decisions revolve around Germany, and it's set up to be relatively "newbie friendly", at least until you invade the Soviet Union. The US is "easy mode", but it's typically around 5-6 Looooong years before you really get to do anything, and then you're going to have serious supply issues projecting power without any previous experience at the game.

I MUCH prefer running a mid-sized industrialized minor (Hungary, Romania, Sweden, Brazil, etc.), because they give you a nice taste of the game without having to deal with hundreds of divisions, fleets, and air wings spread around the globe, or the pivotal role in a situation that you don't yet understand. Play the supporting role for your first game, learn the basics, figure out how to make the most of what you have to work with, THEN jump into the deep end of the pool.

Those are great choices and tips, i appreciate it, but sorry if this change the subject but do you know the mod ww1? Probably of course haha anyway, well I'm playing as Japan, and so far i have like kinda draw shitty battle plains towards north of china and east of china. Not too far, just to river beds so i can hold out till the north is conquered. All i want is the north. Anyway, i made another HQ, research technology, im gonna build a chemical factory. But atm with im stuck with, is being bloody neutral. I don't really want to cheat, but again they join the allies so if i go in war with them, I go at war with pretty much everyone. Btw ww1 ended, and I'm gonna join the Soviet Union Fraction.

I think Marxian and Kovax have pretty much hit the nail on the head. If your planning to write an AAR and you want it to be historical rather than gamey then you really need to choose one of the main faction nations that have the ability to dictate the pace and flow of the game without explioting game design weaknesses or cheats.

USA and USSR have long and complicated preludes to actual war, which are fun to play, but hard to sell effectively in an AAR. It basically means that the opening chapters of your AAR are going to read like an accountancy lesson, and its hard to keep readers attention for five to seven years of gameplay when nothing dramatic is happening.

If you're opting to go a-historic with an AAR based on something like 'How Albania conquered the world.' then the style really needs to reflect that and be more of a guide on how to manipulate the game engine. Its also imposibble to actually win the game unless you are in one of the factions, so you will need to set your own victory conditions. I discovered this playing my first game as the USA, when Roosevelt got kicked out of office early in the game and the USA failed to join the Allies. Even though I still conquered Japan and Manchuria there was no way I could win the game without being part of the Allies Faction. So, in the end I had to just declare myself the winner.
