Hi!

I'm having a really hard time to figure how to build my infantry templates. For defensive ones i'm ok , but when i have to attack (and have a minor nation without tanks) i'm lost.
The enemy defense value is off the charts , often something like 800 or more with all their bonuses , their attack often in the 500 range while i'm attacking.

Often it happens that with 40 width inf divisions i can't get more than 150-ish breakthrough.
This means that even if i have tens of divisions against a province , with air superiority even ,if they can have the same width (often in my case they have like 8 divisions per province) they just melt my attacking forces with their bonuses on attack and defense (my planning bonus is never enough), not allowing my reserves to fight.

So how should i build my inf divisions to attack? if i get more than 2 or artillery per 20width org, hp and such start to become a problem.
Should i try even with minors to build at least some tanks? should I mix them with regular infantry ? is it viable?
Or is better to just have some specialized tank divisions to breakthrough?

In that case , what are some good templates? I really can't find an optimal infantry/motorized and tank balance , i mean it seems that having a division of full tanks makes hp a problem , but having too few it makes armor/breakthorugh too little.

Any tips on what and how to build tanks with minors are really welcome , thanks!

Hello, It really depends on who your up against, if your fighting players controlling major countries, your kind of simply out classed and doomed with a minor country. vs the Ai try 7 infantry +2 arty, 40 width is can be hard to maintain man power but use a double 20 width (14 infantry +4 arty) also use all support ya can (engineers, scouts, more arty, and anti tank)

lots of close air support helps too.

basically hover over a single enemy unit to see what template they are using helps too. then you can adjust yours to be slightly better.
don't get discouraged on day one, day two or three often turns into your favor if you have a good template. For a minor country, using this much Arty can cost a lot and make tanks too expensive to have, if you do use tanks, really try to keep them from defending, that's what a motorized template is for.

Land doctrines make a big difference and a Minor can often out tech a major in that field due to all the focus tree research bonuses.

If you got to war early enough, support arty should be enough till about 1940.
This is pre cornflakes info though.
Some minors may have major debuffs vs Japan if Marco Polo happens.

make sure you have divisions with 100% equipment and man power and a good sock pile of man power and equipment.

Unfortunately your going to run into this type of division every where for game balance reasons

infantry is not good at attack in this game. It has poor breakthrough values and high defense value, so in equal situation you can not win by attacking an infantry using an infantry. If you really need to attack, use rocket artillery to help. It will provide you more breakthrough than normal artillery (i think so) and get as many advantage as you can.

Simple answer: you don't. Infantry is just not meant for attacking. Against AI, if you don't have enough industry to pump out armor divisions, you can try focusing on air superiority and support (CAS really does tons of damage), and use most basic infantry just to hold the line and finish off damaged enemy divisions.

You can't really. Even a 9-8 infantry division will only barely ever so barely break the 14-4's defense if it has a tier of equipment advantage. I guess you could try a 5-10 but the losses will be massive.

We use tanks to attack now.

In this patch when I am unable to use tanks and end up pushing with mostly infantry (Romania taking hungry or Yugoslavia early game) I used 20 width pure infantry with a focus on getting good support battalions, Art, recon, eng, and hospital (you will lose a lot of men this way). I try to take a lesson from the schlieffen plan and first draw the enemy into a position that enables easier encircling. I do this using a mix between fallback lines and/or stretching my lines too thin to force holes. As they push into this, they will be need to move troops around as their lines stretch. This is when I start pushing into areas with troops moving around. Some attacking with the sole purpose of holding down their troops, and others attacking places where they are now weaker.

Thus, I feel it is less about finding a good division (there really isn't a great breakout infantry division) and more using tactics that means breaking lines becomes easier

But on the whole, use tanks

Frankly an offensive infantry division is flawed in the current patch. It's a bad decision. Defense is too high at the moment relative to soft attack., You need 4-1 ratios to punch through. Even with superior fire power and large industry (US) I didn't find it to be worth the effort.

40-width infantry units with no art except support to hold the line. The AI cannot push these lines without tanks and will lose insane amounts of manpower that they cannot regenerate in time do to the way manpower now works. Offensives only do with tanks at the moment.

Mind you large infantry offensives can work if you have the manpower to waste and the CAS to support them. Maximize organization to drag out the fight and let the air-force do the damage.

But in terms of efficiency, Infantry to guard or probe the enemy line, tanks to attack and massive air-force to break organization.
