Anyone have good recommendations?

I am not afraid of academic level writing, and in fact prefer it, so if there is a Stephen Ambrose of Brit military history, I would just as soon leave him on the shelf.

Who are the primary authors, and what are their areas of expertise?

You could check out some books by Hew Strachan:

"The Politics of the British Army" is probably the best one...

lawrence james, especialy liked last years Warrior Race, the History of the british at war.

Well since you dont have a preference ill list some general works by fellow academics, with their field of spcialty.

Jeremy Black Why wars happen,+ Warfare in the 18 cent, Britain as a mil power 1668-1815.

John childs ,Army of charles 1,+ army and king James and the glourouise revoulution, +British army of william 111, the 9 years war and the british army 1688-1697, + operations in the low countrys

David french, british economic and strategic planning 1905-1915, + The british way in war 1688-2000.

Richard holmes,The Oxford companion to militry history, Soldiers, the history of men in battle.

Ought to be something there to keep you busy.
