If you're playing Maj1, having a marketplace and several inns around a guardhouse is an excellent money-making arrangement (they call it a Wall Street.) In Maj2, the only benefit of inns is to give heroes a resting place outside of town, so they don't have to run as far to find shelter (that, and party formation.) It won't make you extra money- heroes pay tax at their own guilds anyway.

Basically, upgrading your marketplace and building trading posts are your most direct source of income. You can also get money from killing monsters by researching things for your heroes to buy with the money they earn.

You would also want to build a Magic Bazaar for it's 200 gold bonus (don't research potions yet, if at all).

I research the defensive and speed potions as soon as possible and sometimes all of them. I know that some of my heroes will end up spending all their gold at the bazaar instead of buying equipment or healing potions but the income is worth a few deaths. The last game I played my completely researched bazaar was bringing in around 1,500 gold per day.

At that rate the bazaar pays for itself in just 8 days and provides more income than any other building. May I ask why you prefer to not research potions?

Yeah that does suck and like you I used to avoid researching potions for that exact reason. But after experimenting I realized the extra income was more beneficial than well equipped heroes. Not having healing potions only kills heroes when they are low level. Eventually they reach the point where it doesn't matter, either parties are formed and a cleric takes care of healing or they drink a speed potion and successfully flee. The extra 1300 gold per day can buy a lot of clerics or fast access to the resurrection spell. At only 750 gold a pop you can easily bring back the few who die. Honestly, because monsters are so weak my heroes rarely die, even without healing potions. Try it out sometime, I think you'll see that the extra gold is worth it.

I generally stick to 3 heroes per kind (or 2 for temple ones), so massing out Clerics isn't really happening.

And usually got enough money I don't really care that much about making more, rather upping my heroes.
