Does the reformed faith work the same way as Protestant? as in the first 5 years it pops up you should immediately switch for best results as a larger nation? Or is that just when the reformation first happens. Also what decisions should one take or not take to improve chances for protestant/reformed events?

Yep, it's pretty much the same as Protestant, just with a later switchover. You should stay Catholic until the Reformed religion appears, because Protestant provinces don't spontaneously flip to Reformed. The various modifiers on province flip events are listed in the wiki. Innovative ideas will greatly increase your chances of being the birthplace of Reformed.

I noticed in later start dates a disparity between Protestant and Reformed nations - could somebody explain the difference to me? I thought if a once-Catholic nation reformed its church, it WAS Protestant. In-game, what is each religion meant to represent, and how are they mechanically different from one another?

It isn't very good to be Reformed.

The only possible Reformed countries are Scotland and some German minors.

My last game had Bohemia and Poland go reformed.

The main problem with reformed is that even protestants will hate you. While this may have been true in RL somewhat the reformed nations still aided the protestant nations in their fights against the catholics, so basically in EU4 you are ahistorically isolated if you choose to become reformed.

Poland usually stays catholic even when 80% of the country is protestant/reformed.

Bohemia sticks with Protestantism until Austria stomps it.

I believe Protestant is similar to Lutheran while reformed is Calvinistic.

Aside from later flipover dates, is there any mechanical difference between the two? 'Cos in terms of labels on the map, "Reformed" doesn't sound to me as finalised as "Protestant" does - so if there's really no difference between them the latter would be my preference when I choose to abandon the Papists, haha

Although Reformed is usually pretty dismal compared to Protestant (and very so compared to baseline Catholic), who exactly becomes Reformed is pretty random. I've seen Austria flip before.

Edit: And no, only difference is who considers you a heretic and the bonus. Barring something crazy like Austria going Reformed, Protestant is pretty much better for all values of 'better.'

Austria is a clusterfuck, it is often catholic, but in one of my game it becomes Hussite after annexing some czech provinces.

Austria becoming Protestant can make a hellfire reformation, with Italy, Iberia and, possibly, France being the bastions of Catholicism.

Historically, there were several major Reformation figures, with their own theologies.

Martin Luther was the first, and founded what became the Lutheran Church, which became the official church of the Scandinavian countries and parts of Northern Germany. His followers are Protestant in-game. The game also groups Anglicans (i.e. the Church of England) in here, probably because they're both liturgical and tend to defer to secular authority; Anglican theology tends to fluctuate depending on when and who you ask. Being Protestant in-game gives you +10% tax income and -10% idea cost.

John Calvin came later, and preached a somewhat different theology. Among the key differences were the nature of Communion and the doctrine of double predestination. You can look them up if you care. This family of churches, which both historically and in-game were known as the "Reformed Churches", were particularly dominant in the Netherlands, Scotland, and parts of Switzerland, Germany and France. In-game they give you +1 advisor pool and +10% trade efficiency.

Well, -10% idea cost is a pretty huge difference... one will save you lots of MP, the other wont.
Well, +1 adviser (the equivalent Reform bonus) will probably save you at least some idea points (due to being more likely to have an adviser of the right level).

More generally, assuming you take no ideas in the ~60-70 years before you convert, Protestant will save you 7*8*40=2240 monarch points over the course of the game. That's not nothing, but it's not insurmountable either.
