I have both Steam and GOG builds of Stellaris with all DLCs . But there are very few differences. I am thinking many of files are bogus files and need to be excluded in release build. But those files are still there. I asked that to GOG support but they said to me only developers could change this. Let's take a look to those files :

GOG.jpg

Steam.jpg

As you can see there is a .PDB file. At least I am sure this file is %100 bogus in the release build. I am not sure about so.1 , so.2 and .dylib files. And I don't know their purpose but probably they are bogus too, because they looks like uncompiled files. There are also few more .txt files and some .bat files. If any dev reading this thread please shed some light about this .

PDB is probably debugger related file, kind of strange to leave it there but I guess whoever made the GOG package was in a hurry.

Also seems like the Steam version has bunch of Linux version files mixed in.

That's pretty much weird :S I am really surprised right now. But probably we won't get any official response. Actually I don't have any hope about this.

Thanks for reporting this,

I don't normally read the forums but a college sent me a link to this thread. Those files are used for debugging problems with the game and you are correct in saying that they shouldn't be there in a release build. This was an oversight which I will correct in the next update to the game. I can confirm however that they are not used in the release version of the game and have no effect on gameplay.

Hope you're enjoying Megacorp!

In the thread https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...ellaris-a-quick-performance-analysis.1138327/ I mentioned that with PDB file one could get more info. I'll elaborate a bit on what it does.

As mentioned by Deephack it does NOT affect the performance or running of the game in any degree.

What it does is contain information about function names etc. So if you use a debugger or a profiler with the game it uses the PDB file to give nice human readable names for things. So a random function@0x1234abcd becomes something like Planet::IsColony. It also contains info like what .cpp file that function comes from so one can, with sources available, easily find where that function actually was. It also contains mappings that what asm instructions map into what lines. So instead of showing placeholders the view on this post https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...k-performance-analysis.1138327/#post-24971752 would actually show useful information.

So it's basically just an annotated map of the executable. Nothing that the runtime actually uses. Simply an oversight of the release process. The only downside is the bit higher hard drive space usage as it's a large file.

One could say this is bit of a bad leak from a lawyering perspective as it exposes their internal architecture. However in reality it's not a big deal. To be honest I would prefer if everyone would just release the PDB database with games meant for modding but ah well. Not going to happen.

Jeez... sounds like this is an OCD thing. How does someone end up looking for files which don't change gameplay?

Are you claiming that one of the game versions runs better or diiferent?
they do run different, the gog version saves games to the local drive only;
+ you can have as many saves as you like in a ironman run and see what would happen if you went left instead of right back in year whatever
- its very easy to accidentally delete your game saves by pressing the 'online' saves option without knowing what it actually does

up to you as to if one version is "better" than the other but this thread is pointless anyway

1st world problems. When the revolution comes, likes of you will be lined up and shot!

You should have said "you will be "Respectfully" lined up and "Respectfully" shot!" since even simply disagreeing is too hardcore for the forum...

Agreeing should be done respectfully too because I feel so offended when people just casually agrees with me...
