Prologue
flazhok.jpg

Before the Weltkreig Russia was one of the greatest states in the world it ruled from the pacific to the baltic, from Warsaw to Vladivostok, from the deserts of Central Asia to the icy tundra of Lapland it was all ruled by one man the Tsar.

200px-Nicholas_II_of_Russia_painted_by_Earnest_Lipgart.jpg

His Holy Majesty Tsar Nicholai II Emperor and Autocrat of all the Russia's

However on the 28th of June in the year of our lord Nineteen Hundred Fourteen the downfall of the great Russian Empire was set in motion. For on that fateful day Archduke Franz Ferdinand heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was assassinated by a Serb nationalist thus bringing all of Europe into the Weltkrieg.

The Archduke Franz Ferdinand

The Weltkrieg ruined Russia her armies beaten ,her people hungary, the entire nation losing hope in it self and in her autocrat. What was happening in Russia the nation was dying it seemed only blood socked revolution could bring save Russia from being destroyed. Russia had long struggled with fear of revolution, ever since the assassination of reform minded Tsar Aleksandr II the fear of revolution hung over the mighty empire. Tsar Aleksandr III was a tyrant, a despot of the old order his brutal reign held the empire togther through all hardship including several famines in the 1890's. But the next Tsar, Nicholai II was not like his father he was not as brutal or repressive but he was also no reformer like his grandfather. This left the 300 year old Romanov dynasty with a timid ruler who's priority was his family. In 1905 amid the disaster of war with Japan the long held fear of revolution finnaly hit Russia when saliors on the pride of the Imperial Navy the battleship Potemkin mutinied.

The Potemkin

Out of this revolution of 1905, Russia became a constitutional monarchy however the power of the new Duma was limited at best it was still clear the Tsar still held all the power. These reforms were megere at best even then the Tsar was not very willing to agree to them he only did under extreme pressure. So Russia went into the Weltkrieg as an absolute monarchy with a constitition, an autocrat who did not want the job in the first place, and a nation divided over its future.

On August 17th 1914 the Imperial Russian Army launched an invasion of East Prussia hopeing to catch the German Empire off guard and to buy time for the French and British to stabalize the western front. The invasion started off well enough the Russian first army under the command of general Paul von Rennenkampf beat back a German counter-offensive at the Battle of Gumbinnen rasing moral of the Russian troops as there offensive continued. However things took a worse for the Tsar's military at the Battle of Tannenberg were 504 years ago the armies of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania defeated the army of the Teutonic Order. The Russian first under the command of von Rennenkampf and the Russian second army under the command of Alexsandr Samsonov the two army's totaled over 400,000 Russian troops. While the opposing German eighth army under the command of Paul von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff had barely over 160,000 men. The two Russian commanders had a past history of hatred for each other which went back to the war with Japan, this personal hatred hindred the Russian armies. General Samsonov went ahead of General von Rennenkampf where the Germans manged to encircle the second army where they destroyed it, rather then report the loss of an army to the Tsar general Samsonov commited suicide. General von Rennenkampf was now alone not knowing the fate of his rival the Germans soon forced his retreat and thus the Prussian campaign ended in disater for Russia.

The war just got worse for Russia on the 21st of August 1915 the Tsar took personal command of the army form his uncle the Grand Duke Nicholai. While away at the front the Tsarina Alexandra along with the mad monk Grigori Rasputin were in charge of the state. Rasputin was believed to have a spell over the Tsarina for his magical ability to heal the Tsesarevich Alexei, however he was hated by almost everyone else and was eventually murdered by Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, Prince Felix Yusupov, and Vladimir Purishkevich three figures who were to become important in Russian history later.

The Weltkrieg turned Russia into a living hell for it's people the food was running out, there was constant military disasters, and the autocratic government did not help either. Dispite this Russia did have one bright spot in its otherwise dismal preformance in the Weltkrieg, from June 4th to September 20th 1916 the Russian armies under the command of the briliant general Aleksei Brusilov defeated the armies of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the German Reich causing over a million casualities but the losses for the Imperial Army were also high out a little over 600,000 men, 500,000 were casualities with 440,000 of those being dead or wounded. Despite this success the people still saw it as a defeat thus contributing to the rising discontent against the Tsar's government.

world_war_1.jpg

General Brusilov, Brave troops of the Imperial Army

With the discontent rising it was only a matter of time before the Tsar's regime came crashing down, food prices were soaring, the people wanted land, and most of all they wanted the war to end. On March 8th 1917 the die was cast the people arose against the Tsar regime, bread rioters, industrial workers, and disloyal troops forced his majesty the Tsar Nicholai to abdicate the 300 year dynasty came to an end. What replaced his majesty's government was a coalition of liberals and socialists who wanted to form a democratic assembly to decide the nations future. However a group of socialists formed a diffrent group known as the Soviet or council where groups of workers and pesants got togther to form a government opposite of the provisonal government in a system of dual power or dvoevlastie. The leader of the Provsional government Prince Georgy Lvov appointed by the Tsar in his last act as sovereign, soon proved incapable of holding the disunited govenment togther and resigned in July 1917 and gave the office to Alexsandr Kerensky who was to play a big part in the drama about to unfold.

The new government of the Russian Republic soon proved it self just as incapable of fighting the war as the Tsar's government plus with not end to the war in site tension continued to rise and the thinks looked dark for Russia. In July 1917 Kerensky ordered the last Russian offensive of the Weltkrieg. Led by Aleksei Brusilov the Russian's hoped for victory Kerensky needed it to restore moral and to put trust in his government. But no such thing happened the offensive failied Russia was beaten, this was the fatal blow to the Kerensky government. Tension built up in the capitial of Petrograd the loyalty of the garrison could no longer be counted on. In August 1917 a coup was attempted by Lavr Kornilov a general in the army whose goal was to restore order to the Russian army and to stop the nation form descending into chaos. However the coup failed Kornilov along with several other generals including Anton Denikin were arested, this only weakned the government more the situation was getting out of control. On October 25th 1917 on the Julian calendar (November 7th Gregorian) Vladimir Lenin who had been shiped back into Russia from his Swiss exile by the Germans overthrew Kerensky's government and Russia feel into the hands of the Bolsheviks.

The Congress of Soviets,Vladimir Lenin

The resistance to Bolshevik power was almost instant in the Don, Alexey Kaledin convinced the cossacks to resist Bolshevik authority and rebel. Many generals who were arested in the Kornilov affair escaped and managed to get to the Don this included Kornilov, Anton Denikin, and Mikhail Alekseyev. These three organized the Volunteer Army now major resistance to the Bolsheviks began the civil war to save holy mother Russia form the wicked and godless Bolsheviks had begun.
