Thanks to their NI, all is possible! The AI would have done it as well, I think... Just want to know where they end up next :p.

Seems the AI and I have similar goals in mind for Connacht. :)

Chapter Twenty-Four: The Great KhaZar (Part 2)

So, where did I leave? Ah yes, with the heroic admiral Yuriy Kovanski emptying the royal coffers to sail out of port. He must prove his worth. Together with the Bavarians, he breaks the blockade of the peninsula in the Ionian Sea, sinking eight of Changsheng's galleys, before engaging the rest of their fleet in the Gulf of Taranto. Even if he leaves the lead to the Bavarian admiral Hafenbrädl, the rest of the enemy fleet meets the same fate as the first part. They shouldn't have fielded so many galleys anyway, as they've run out of names for them.

2a78opH.jpg

Changsheng's resistance is now limited to its cities resisting the sieges. Only Poznan is not under siege, and I resolve to remedy this by getting access through Huron. 4k Zazzauans have fled into Northern Russia, while their country is being looted by the terrible horde. A terrible horde, so efficiently drilled and proud of their aura of invincibility that they all fight until the bitter end. The morale advantage which keeps Russia's armies strong is even greater now.

K9Ulune.jpg

As the riches of Zazzau and Changsheng flow into Tsaritsyn, the colonial authorities in Beafada find the best way to properly exploit the natives. As fitting to our reputation, they are turned into slaves. A fate that Koltsov-Mosalski spares the Zazzauan army, as he ends their expedition in Veda-Suvar.

5xgQx5X.jpg

The Orthodox are utterly defeated. It is time to decide of the terms. Changsheng has to cede the two 1BT ports along the Black Sea and Sofia, turning the Black Sea into the Russian Sea. Zazzau has to cede their Eastern part, and release Poznan as Mali. Surrounded by stronger neighbours, and devoid of a strong alliance since Manchu ditched them, Zazzau's fate is to be eaten by their enemies, Russia, Huron and Yeren. Revenge is mine! To stay under 100% overextension, I give my vassal Songhai Pskov, resting at 96% OE.

3oL1drD.jpg

The Manchu decide that rivalling the big horde to the East is futile. Songhai acts as buffer, and their eyes lie on the North of the HRE for now, as they invade Keladi. So they abandon their rivalry. Serbia is quick to fill in their place. Do they think defeating Russia is as easy as beating Ashanti? Or are they still bitter that I abandoned them in their won war? Anyway, my reaction is to add them as third rival, after the two Western hordes. One of my merchants relies on Serbian wares, and so he defects to the enemy. More mercantilism is the answer.

11RztO5.jpg

Koltsov-Mosalski dies peacefully at the end of these last wars. As such, I am looking for a fitting replacement, and hire Platon Menshikov (4/2/6/3). But then I decide it is better for Russia to have more generals and remind myself that Kovanski is useless, just creating debts, and replace him with Andrei Baryatiski (4/2/4/4), a general who will be very useful in future sieges.

11RztO5.jpg

Now at peace, I take a look outside. My involvement in Sweden has finally convinced them that they can colonize themselves, and they expand into the Brazilian inland. I will leave them alone from now on. The Jalayirids fall into civil war, but I don't think that Mahmud's great army will have a hard time dealing with the rebels. Another country had more difficulties. Sunda, former emperor and conqueror of the Lorrainian Commonwealth (LC from now on), may have survived the coalition war, but it took a heavy toll. Rebels have risen in the whole country, and have torn it apart. All that remains is a fading memory, a renewed RFR and the LC. The de Barrau family has lived on under Sunda, and has retaken the throne while finishing off their old enemy. Well played, Henryk.

07L66IM.jpg

Aïr's expedition back into Europe ends in total failure. They didn't manage to get enough troops East, and have finally had enough. Nagpur enforces the return of all of PC's provinces. Aïr should concentrate on their new homeland. Maybe I should have abandoned their old cores in England.

UIxFPA8.jpg

Being at peace is not the way of life for a horde. There is always an enemy that asks for destruction. So my sight falls on Liège. Reduced by the great horde to an OPM in 1BT Oltenia, with no allies, they can't resist long. Pavel shatters their pitiful army, takes Oltenia in 197 days, and then annexes the poor nation, bringing Russia to 100% OE. Along the way, he repays the loan thanks to the spoils of the Zazzauan war.

MkG2v2s.jpg

Restless, Nupe has eagerly looked upon the falling Sundanese, and doesn't wait long to claim their parts. They invade the poor RFR, whose second revolution is deemed to fail even faster then the first one. Who knows, maybe they will find their luck in their oppressive new overlord in the future... Of course, this doesn't influence mighty Russia. It only shows that we have to keep looking for riches outside of our borders. Some factions argue that Alimuly is such a province ripe for the taking. Pueblo, threatened by such a claim, invites Pavel to the Eid al-Fitr to alleviate such dangers.

iQgHNjs.jpg

Before waging the next war, the coffers have to be filled again. A monopoly company is the perfect answer. Richer by 1560 ducats, Pavel protects pilgrims full of piety, and starts annexing Holland, before declaring the next war against Navarra, with whom our truce conveniently just ended, to connect his Anatolian possessions by land. My allies don't help, but one does not need them if one is Russia.

HRE45st.jpg

Baryatiski immediately attacks with 20k men, and is reinforced by Pavel's 32k shortly after. The Navarrese resist fiercely, using the full advantage of their muskets against the Russian bows, but have to retreat facing the unshakable morale and the overwhelming numbers of Russia's army.

1bqhoKZ.jpg

Palembang makes an even stronger stand in the mountains of Erzurum, dealing Menshikov some severe casualties before breaking into a retreat. But with a reserve of 243k men, those losses do not hurt Russia much. As they flee Eastward into Ashanti territory, Manchu's ambitions in Imperial territory take concrete forms, as they take Bremen from Keladi and push into Lan Na next.

2RInISA.jpg

With the full growth of Beafada into a city, the year of 1681 draws to a close. Russia has, unsurprisingly, bested all their enemies, proving their unstoppable might. For now. The battles of Kütahya and Erzurum show that it becomes harder and harder to withstand muskets with bows. By sheer numbers, all their enemies might be vanquished now, but in a full conflict with Manchu or the Jalayirids, or a Venezuela that might reform and westernize off Transylvania, might be hard even for the Russian horde. Either way, this is their current state, at war with Navarra, Palembang and Ashanti.

b0YhDqt.jpg

But I roll a one, and it is time to leave for a less invincible nation. My first roll is Jharkhand: Ruling over the Baleares, Corsica and Sardinia, they are surrounded by much stronger powers and can't really do much. So I overrule this choice, to get Orléans next. Former emperor, one of the few Catholics left in the HRE, on the receiving end of a war. But with some potential if I can save it, as there are a lot of cores around Orléans can try to reclaim.

Russia is quite the juggernaut. I hope they do westernize so they can terrorize the rest of the world. It's also a plus that they're almost in the correct spot where they should be.

Woot, Orleans! I've been hoping to see them get played for awhile.

Orleans should be very interesting, to see if you can turn the war around and begin restoring the grandeur of Orleans. Will you make a bid for the Holy Roman Emporer title?

Woot, Orleans! I've been hoping to see them get played for awhile.

For that matter, there's a lot of wind in North America :). And Russia - I have my doubts. And if they do, I predict a Scotland/Medri Bahri - esque explosion.

Great AAR!

My only problem is that I am now emotionally invested is certain states... I hope all goes well for Ning, BB and Air!

Thanks! Well, that's the problem if you do such a random playthrough - you favourise some states over others. Good that some of my countries are ruling the world :D.

Orleans should be very interesting, to see if you can turn the war around and begin restoring the grandeur of Orleans. Will you make a bid for the Holy Roman Emporer title?

Interesting it will be. But for the HRE, the small religious update should show why that's not possible :(.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Before going on to Orléans, I'll give a short religious overview, as by now the reformation and counter-reformation have hit and I have neglected to give an overview of it's impact since my time in the LC. Let's just say that it has been very successful.

Christian Faiths:

The Catholic faith has taken a great hit. The Protestant reformation has really been a wildfire in Europe, and the Manchu as well as most of the HRE and the Huron have embraced this faith. The Reformed faith on the other hand sees its success only in form of Aïr and Jalayirid-aided Nupe, which has taken over most of France and Western Italy. Nagpur and Jharkhand also adhere to these beliefs, but are very minor. Catholicism on the other hand is prominent in Champa, Iberia, Italy, Xiu, Yeren and its Hanseatic PU-underling as well as in Transylvania and the Northern Islands who everybody ignores. While the pope's authority has declined, the patriarchs of the East have have it much harder. With Russia pressing Westward, only Zazzau and Changsheng have subsisted as independent Orthodox nations.

Muslims:

North Africa and Western/Northern Asia are firmly in Sunni hands, with Shia Persia in form of Ashanti, Katsina and Khorasan in between. The Muslims have encroached into China through Yatenga's short period of success, and Tafilalt and Baluchistan hold on to Muslim SEA. Pagarruyung's colonies also follow Allah, and Tafilalt has recently begun colonizing as well.

Eastern Faiths:

The Hindus control India, and have strong nations outside of it in Demak and Connacht, who are spreading over Indonesia and Australia. The Buddhists are mostly caught in between them, and with Haixi's current rise, Confucius' teachings spread further North. Brandenburg's Shinto has taken hold of their lands on the continent.

Pagans:

Save for Khalka and Dagbon, the Shamans of Siberia have fallen into insignificance, overpowered by the Sunnis (thanks to Russia). Miao keeps Africa's Eastern gold mines in Animist hands, while Mong Yang in Congo still clinges on to Shamanist ways. America has seen the Europeans land, and they have almost brought the Nahuatl faith to its extinction. Unlike them, they have left the Mayans and Inti alone for now. Christendom slowly finds its way into the North American Natives, while Sweden still is Animist albeit Westernized.

With this insight on religion, it is time to go on. The next chapter should be up later today or tomorrow.

Chapter Twenty-Five: Louis l'Imbécile

For anyone not capable of the beautiful French language, the nickname I have assigned to Louis IV di Piombino should also be comprehensible. Why this not so flattering title? Because he has brought Orléans into a losing war? Because he is the last king in a row of ones who brought the kingdom's decline since the League War? No, the reason is much simpler, while all the before might be true, even a genius could not have prevented it in the wrong circumstances. Louis has the intellectual abilities of a three-years-old who wants to take something no matter what, a whopping 0/0/1. The current war, against Crete, Bashkiria, Djerid, Flanders and Sus saw Orléans outnumbered since the beginning, with three battles all ending in his men taking a severe defeat.

Pjklxhx.jpg

His administration didn't go much better, while all religious decisions are enacted, Orléans suffers of a tax income loss and diplomats suspected as spies. While having all administrative, quantity and Italian ideas, the influence and offensive ideas are barely begun and three economic ideas embraced. The last of these ideas is most helpful in this hard times, as it combats our inflation of 9.45%. The economy has to bear six loans, but due to the undersized army, there is a profit of 9 ducats.

M20NMM6.jpg

Speaking of the army, the recent defeats took a heavy toll. The fleet is sunk, save for a lonely merchantman. Only seven regiments of 35 possible are fielded. Four more are in the process of recruitment, and general Raoul de Tannoys (0/2/5/0) is devising a plan how to best avoid conflict with the enemy's 38k men and their top-general in Orléans' richest province, 15BT Mantua. The first thing I do is have Louis join the ranks of the army. His son Philippe is a 3/3/3, and a regency wouldn't hurt as much as I'd have to rebuild anyway.

uWJnsaS.jpg

The technological situation doesn't look as dire as one would think: 21/20/21, which means one level behind, but with admin 22 just a few points away. And the diplomatic one actually looks good, with Orléans being able to count on Champa, Kangra, Hosokawa and Xiu as allies. But they don't help much in the current conflict. I wish to end it as soon as possible, and am surprised to see that Crete is willing to accept a mild peace. Only reparations have to flow into their direction, and Mantua is prevented from being sacked. Time to rebuild, and I take the mission to vassalize OPM Osage in Cremona.

gpgIaLv.jpg

I also go on the lookout for a better ally than Xiu, as I fear that Russia is going after them in the near future, and break the alliance. I butter up to Osage, and build up my army, while I also get nervous as Nupe annexes RFR again and breaks its alliance with Osage. Are they Nupe's next target, then I have to dishonour the call, and my prestige is already fairly low. I do also unlock the constitution and trade ideas, as the Jalayirids vassalize Navajo, a 2PM tribe wedged into JB.

nCGjEBl.jpg

Russia makes peace with Palembang, and Khorasan piles on Ashanti, which tells me that the horde just took care of the hedgehogs' army. Then Orléans falls into decadence. Really? We just lost a war, are rebuilding our army almost from scratch, and you feel happy and secure? There's the Russian behemoth at our door! It's hostile to us! It won't take forever to beat up Navarra! We are not secure! Not at all! There are also the heretic devils from Nupe right next to us, our much stronger rivals! Secure! You really have to be decadent and drunk to think this!... Oh wait.

kGoDYcU.jpg

At least the bureaucracy recovers fast and brings in more desperately needed cash. I repay my first loan as Champa attacks the OPM it had to release in the Mexican Independence War, Tuscany, and its ally Powhatan, and calls me in. Sure I'll help. Just don't expect me to pack my army onto my single merchantman and ship it over to help you against such a weak foe. Powhatan is at war with Québec, so they won't be a nuisance either. Champa marches into Lothian under Che Anan Che and any Tuscan resistance is futile. I also see 9k Jalayirids on vacation in Ayrshire. Aren't there nicer destinations? They have to wait there since the last war, exiled, hoping to see the sun again some day...

wRWn97J.jpg

As my army is strong enough again (at least I have no manpower problems), Osage accepts my vassalization, and I dream of reclaiming Bari. The threat from Russia increases though, as they accept to make peace with Navarra, seizing their Aegean ports. Thankfully the great Khazar Pavel dies during the peace talks, admittedly of boredom, and as his son is a child, Pyotr II takes over, an administrator. Maybe I'll have some breathing time before they push further West. Their ally Bavaria grows stronger though, as they successfully westernize.

jYkiVqW.jpg

Aïr may still be bitter about the loss of PC's provinces, but they return to diplomacy to take it back. PC has dropped the P and declared themselves successor of the Western Russians, and they start transferring trade power to their English neighbour, a first step to peaceful vassalization. With their new ally, Aïr attacks Parma, which draws them into conflict with Portugal. Nupe also attacks the LC. I fear that if they fall this time, they won't be able to make a resurrection.

bAI92jL.jpg

Then, the 22nd October 1684, begins the great cardinal game of Istria. Living close to Sukhothai's reformed, he has thoughts of heresy. Sadly this makes him unsuitable as cardinal. Over the next years, the new cardinals will all either fall to heresy or be schemed out by rivalling nations, but in the end the seat will always return to Istria in the next month. I have counted six cardinal movements out and into Istria. Orléans always kept its four cardinals. Seems to be a very holy place. Just a short excerpt of all this intrigue:

PLhafiu.jpg

Russia's new Khazar may not be a militarist, but he's still interested in keeping his neighbours weak, and warns me. Not good. As Nagpur besieges Tuscany before Champa can, that war drags on, but also a war in the East, which involves a Ragusan aggression against Date, pulling in Demak on its side. Demak promptly gets overrun by Date's alliance, including Connacht, which leads to serial attacks on Demak in the next years, with Ning being the first to try its luck. But back to the Champan war. It drags on, and that is not a good thing for Orléans. Just coming out of a period of decadence, my people is now so eager to go to war, even if not a single Italian makes his way to fight Tuscany in Lothian, that there is nobody left to tend to the arts. I think the population of this country tries to emulate its king.

lRT9x58.jpg

Even if the people clamours for war as does its king, I spend my time rebuilding, researching, getting my military tech on par with the time (mil tech 22, the cartridge), and it pays off in form of a good harvest. Even if I need cash, I go for the option to invest it all, to counter Louis' incredible brains. Shortly after, I repay my last loan anyway. With the truces ending, it might be time to fulfil the people's wish and attack someone again.

pgYfOhr.jpg

The new cardinal in my administration (of course not the ever-changing Istrian one) provides a good counsel to wait for the end of Champa's war so that Orléans can make use of its strength, an advice urgently needed as Louis wants to attack again. I can imagine this cardinal as a more powerful version of Richelieu, completely ousting the dumb king from any royal affair. As such, Richelieu Plus, in preparation for war, renews the alliance with Xiu, as any other potential ally dismissed the Orléanais alliance proposals. The Jalayirids are friendly, but Nupe is more important to them than the Italian state.

7nokLlJ.jpg

Champa annexes Tuscany, and Richelieu gears Louis for war, encouraging him to lead the army, back to 25 regiments, himself. But before the declaration of war, I have to admire Aïr's political successes, as they take provinces from Portugal and rob Parma of their ducats to open them for a future conquest. This money is put to good use as they vassalize Canada, and they can fund all three of their colonists as well as Canada's colonist. North America has now a clear dominator.

9vf5bFt.jpg

A fitting target for the war is quickly found. Louis is obsessed of Crete, or at least of Kutai, but Richelieu dismisses both proposals. Too strong allies, Yeren for both, and Champa wouldn't help against Kutai as well. And Sus holds Venice, an Orléanais core and 13BT center of trade. Seizing this port is very important for the economy, the cardinal points out. Louis submits to his will, and attacks. But as de Tannoys attacks Sus in Treviso, his men prove far inferior and he is badly beaten.

R7FdwDf.jpg

The new good harvest of 1688 is therefore put into the treasury, as the armies retreat South, awaiting Champani reinforcements. Champa arrives shortly after – but prefers to join Xiu in the sieges of Changsheng, quickly overwhelming the Greek nation. Orléans has to fend for itself now. But the enemy doesn't sleep. Seeing Orléans threaten Naples, their stack of 40k men heads into the same direction. Now de Tannoys' speciality comes into play, as he outruns the enemy.

XSp9MHU.jpg

The chase begins the 4th May 1689. Friuli has fallen, and the enemy heads South. As de Tannoys abandons Naples to head into Rome, the enemy tries to take Verona. De Tannoys moves into Naples' direction again, and the enemy reacts. The Orléanais general manages to pick off some leftover armies along the way, but for the price of Osage's army, not fast enough to outrun the enemy and getting torn apart in Ancona the 25th June.

eWHlqRa.jpg

De Tannoys is a patient man though and awaits Champani help. As their fleet reappears on the shores, his spirits are lifted, but only shortly, as they just reinforce their Greek sieges. The chase continues. In November, he manages to attract their attention enough to lead them to Rome, from where they head after his trail through most of Italy. In January 1690, they tire out and return to Verona.

cFAXUks.jpg

Nupe takes Bourgogne from the LC, and Saxony collapses from its former gains against Portugal. Unaffected from these events, de Tannoys continues his campaign picks off small enemy reinforcements made necessary due to attrition, but needs a loan to sustain his run. He manages to prevent any coordinated attack on Orléans for some more time, but finally gets intercepted in Firenze, as king Louis insisted on seeing the army for himself in the capital. Seeing as he couldn't get away this time, de Tannoys is persuaded by Richelieu to give the lead to l'Imbécile, and his loss is disastrous.

1sro6O6.jpg

The chase campaign ended, the army shatters to Istria, giving Richelieu enough time to devise a new strategy. Willing to avoid the fate of Zazzau and Pagarruyung, in internal conflicts while westernizing, he decides to help Orléans' allies in Changsheng so that they may free the nation together afterwards. Russia may not give us military access, but it did give access to Sus, I think. Louis heads South, and Richelieu increases his attempts to control the people. It is up to him to save Orléans from the next loss, as 1691 comes.

iSNjV60.jpg

...Or is it up to me to help him? I roll the dice, and get a five. Orléans, I will save you. I have to! Champa can't besiege Changsheng forever. We will win! And lead the nation to a new, great future!

Istria seems to be having some religious problems, or some very bad cardinals. :p

Orleans must be saved!

I'm always amazed when I see the extent of Russia's expansion into the Balkans.

Istria is a very holy place. It gets even holier! :p

The new chapter's title shall answer that already  (in two parts). And Russia isn't the only nation that amazes me. I don't remember Venezuela as much more than an OPM not even one hundred years ago. Thanks to Russia, look what monster they have become .

Chapter Twenty-Six: A New Hope

So I am just, in the spirit of Louis l'Imbecile, fighting a war against Sus and allies, while Champa has focused on Changsheng for now. Changsheng is almost done with, so it shouldn't take long for Champa to realize that. And they do. The 12th February 1691, with all but Corfu taken or under siege, their 42k men start heading North. The long-anticipated relief force. Richelieu commands the king to leave some men in Morea and head after their saviours.

8O8VRba.jpg

The saviours don't arrive in time to save Verona though, falling into Sus' dirty hands. In an incredible display of stupidity, I have to watch as Champa's army heads further South instead of engaging the enemy in Mantua. What are you doing! King Louis himself understands Champa. Kutai besieges Rome, and he can assault Verona anyway. But even he is stupefied as Champa's army heads straight into Bari.

WCfKyBy.jpg

The cardinal heads out of Firenze immediately, and meets up with king Ko cheng of Champa himself. Having to focus immensely in order for him not to insult his ally of comparable idiocy as Louis, he manages to convince him that the enemy armies are more important than useless sieges. The O'Brien monarch understands Richelieu's concerns and finally turns around, wiping out Kutai's forces. Time to turn the tide.

tysTRBa.jpg

Just as things start to look better, JC attacks CC again. I just hope it doesn't escalate and pulls in Champa, or all my hopes were for nothing. Before that can happen, Champa does chase the enemy along Italy, and I put Louis' army in their way, forcing them to engage, until the reinforcements arrive and push the enemy back all the way to Venice.

qTnoeyD.jpg

Louis takes his position in Treviso. The Champani aren't dumb this time, as they try to free Friuli from enemy occupation. Once, the Westphalian-Sus alliance tries to break out, but as they see Ko cheng on the move, they stop. The cardinal is happy to see that he has taken his words to heart. But his policies upset the nobles. In no condition to decline their demands, Richelieu is fired. He joins up with Champa, angry to be fired, but hopeful that his new king is smarter than the old.

PEJiU9I.jpg

Xiu and my small detachments finish the sieges in Changsheng, and I force them to the peace table. This is when I remember Orléans' greatest period. They held Western Greece, even added it to the HRE. So I am feeling confident to reclaim some cores. 10BT Corfu being the best of them. Their cash reserves might come in handy as well. I repay two loans and lower the rising war exhaustion of 7.41 by 4.

HU2BKFS.jpg

Changsheng becomes an invalid rival thanks to our, well, Champa and Xiu's victory, and I free my central Italian lands. In these lands, the new strong man behind the king, his son Philippe, sees the increase of bartering as a great threat. As the admin points aren't needed for coring, I am spending them this way, to lower my inflation.

DbG3EaV.jpg

Seeing Xiu's army nearby, I decide to have de Tannoys' force which has relieved Firenze to attack Kutai's men threatening Rome. But once again, my allies prove to be dumb and my troops far inferior, as de Tannoys inclines himself in face of Kutai's army. Xiu goes on to besiege Salento.

mOUY3UG.jpg

With all that uselessness surrounding me, I am fearing Russia more and more, who breaks into the HRE by vassalizing Sukhothai. In which normal game does a horde reach the HRE? Sadly, another horde also proves to be very strong. As Mexico also wants a piece of Demak, it allows Ning to conclude a favourable peace with them, though they won't be as lucky with Venezuela. Having attacked Ning's ally Haixi, this horde rampages through Northern Ning and will deal some damage. And unlike Russia, they have already reformed into a Sultanate and could westernize off Transylvania.

SwrdTe1.jpg

After having successfully chased the cardinal out of administration, the nobles get bolder, and put more pressure on Louis IV. The tide of the war seems to turn, and thanks to whom? Certainly not the king, but the good nobles! In exchange for that, they do deserve more privileges, don't they? Louis has no choice but to accept. Meanwhile, I despair about my troops' quality, as de Tannoys fails a second time in his task to free Rome, despite inflicting double the casualties. At least they do not have enough men left to keep up the siege...

Ue04FZ9.jpg

Or do they? They bring in fresh troops fast enough to take the city, and sink my massive fleet that was hidden in port. This time, I have had enough. In the third battle of Roma, the crowned tigers are finally defeated and retreat into their territory, chased by de Tannoys, who wipes them out full of revenge. With the army finally winning, the traders are also inspired and provide more cash to sustain the war effort.

bn94wZ1.jpg

That's when Louis IV dies during the siege of Treviso, letting Philippe II rise to power. A very disputed power. Louis' death lowered stability to -2, war exhaustion is 5.61, leaving a national unrest of +3.9. The ticker for Internal Conflicts starts to turn, and I do my best to prevent this from happening. Having no admin points, I can only lower the war exhaustion by 2 for now. As there are always good news when there are bad news, Russia attacks Bundelkhand next, not me. Whew.

Xiu proves once again why I should have better left the alliance broken. After having taken Salento, they moved North to help with the siege of Treviso. That's completely useless, as I already have 16k men there. But it does give Kutai the chance to recruit new troops. Troops which attack and rout my 3k in Napoli. If Russia goes after you, don't expect any help from Orléans. And if doesn't, I hope that AI Orléans goes after you! You do share a border now!

UZJ3FKg.jpg

King Philippe falls into depression, and goes hunting to forget the stupidity of his ally. He notices a small child in a cradle as the deer he was after flees, and thinks of his own childlessness. But not long. He knew the look on the child's face, just like his father. Fearless, but dumb. He leaves it alone and goes after the deer again. As he returns, he is informed that Yeren has announced Orléans its new rival. Why? Because Zazzau has collapsed. Yeren's old enemy is not worth any rivalry now.

39EETkD.jpg

Verona and Treviso finally fall into Orléanais hands, and I do hope my allies head South now to deal with Kutai, while I leave my men in Treviso to prevent any crossing of the Venetian army. But none of them moves. Unlike the Jalayirids, annexing Bohemia, and the Venezuelan behemoth, carving its way into China. Poor Ning, back to having exclaves.

sIoelDD.jpg

The 25th May 1695, the depression gets the best of Philippe II. He dies heirless. Louis V Tiepolo takes over the mantle to guide Orléans into a better future than the di Piombinos. His first act is to take the stability back to -2, and awaiting the end of the siege of Roma. As it falls, he ends this war. Sus has to cede Venezia. The income of the country explodes. Firstly, 13 BT from Venice. Then, 6 more trade ducats. I don't recall if there's Orléans' main trading port – but I don't have the diplo points to move it anyway.

S2vJxyx.jpg

Tiepolo makes use of this additional income to hire a theologian to reduce the very high unrest, and starts integrating Osage. He improves the military by researching the Light Cavalry (23). Surprisingly, Orléans is only behind in diplo tech now. He repays the loans. But as he is not a legitimate heir, the threat of the Internal Conflicts continues to loom over his head. Still, Osage is integrated without difficulties.

F3ERf1F.jpg

Aïr re-attacks Parma, which draws them into another conflict with Portugal. Demak is now under attack from all sides, and Mexico stops its colonial plans for some ducats. Internally, Louis V's policies pay off, and he is blessed with a heir, Charles. The war exhaustion down to zero, stability at -1, the unrest becomes negative, and the internal conflicts are avoided. Robert de Prunelé doesn't approve of Louis' successes, and claims the crown for himself. As he rises up in Epirus, there is not much I can do against him.

61G9jx6.jpg

Thanks to my power projection, I am able to sustain another general, and hire Claude de Montlhéry (2/2/4/0). It seems the Orléanais generals are all good in manoeuvring. I build up the army with the additional funds of Venice, and enter a royal marriage with heirless Xiu. Under Louis V, the future starts to look bright for Orléans. Not so much for Jharkhand, attacked by Nupe, and CC, occupied by JC. Their defeat draws near, so Champa intervenes on behalf of their colonial subject again. I just hope not to get pulled in.

QdvRqHi.jpg

Poland becomes Manchu's vassal, and Russia beats up Kutai in their war against Bagelkhand. A good decision to give them military access. With the Istrian carousel slowing down, the cardinal who calmed it down gets elected pope. Another success, only stained by nobles worrying for their estates. There is nothing to worry. The king is militarily capable and won't let you down with the new army. To pacify the nobles, I do beatify a local saint though to return to -1 stability.

tCEUMcU.jpg

To really end the instability of his first years, I raise the stability to 0 shortly after. With 43k men under arms, Orléans is ready for the next conflict. A war that is soon to come, as Hosokawa attacks Aztec. I don't care much for the Africans. But they are allied to Kutai. So I answer the call, and the army pours into South Italy. Taking into consideration that 43k of the alliance's men are Orléans' and unable to reach Africa, I don't have much hope for Hosokawa. But maybe they'll give land back to our nation.

dTo6gIe.jpg

Aïr defeats Portugal again, and annexes Parma this time. Russia on the other side of the ocean takes Monastir and Thessaly from Changsheng. My cores! Give them back!... Or not, as they expire immediately after. Worthless land. Not providing anything for our most bountiful harvest! Finally free of the di Piombino kings, even the land is happy!

tHzfQO2.jpg

Champani Colombia, fully occupied and without any help from Champa, goes bankrupt. Their fate is still less severe than Pagarruyung's, whose westernization and internal conflicts ask for a heavy toll, making the nation collapse and release Albania and Algiers. I am a bit sad for them. But not that Hosokawa is being occupied. They deserve it. Did they honestly think with my whooping zero ships I'll be able to help them? Besides, I am papal controller and they are vile infidels. Other good Catholics are Champa and the Jalayirids. I am trying to get on their good side, and I seal a royal marriage with them.

k9i3ojJ.jpg

I feel strong and confident enough to open a second front, aided by superior firepower. Orléans will finally get a hold of Brescia! Sus and Crete, after the loss of Venezia, are no match for my might. As is Kutai's army this time, as they try to cross into Italy from their safe Sicily. De Montlhéry teaches them a lesson this time. As the new general is victorious in the South, de Tannoys deals with Sus in Verona. Not so strong now, are we?

hJox6Yb.jpg

HvdwUkH.jpg

While Orléans progresses again, it is still a Catholic nation, even papal controller. New trade is heretical? Well, if our Istrian friend in the Vatican says so, it is right. And we can't afford losing more prestige.

7dNtruu.jpg

Other nations are starting to look at other ways to expand. Brandenburg has now a firm foothold in China, and intends to reconquer the corridor it had through Korea. Connacht on the other hand is much more ambitious. Enough of being a pure island nation. The Indonesian Irish dream of South America, and proving their worth. Not just any native will do. It has to be the strongest South American nation that has to fall to their might, Tripura! I wish them good luck.

ehl40mM.jpg

With this, 1700 draws to a close. Orléans, as I have to leave it behind, is embroiled in two wars. One, it's own, is as good as won against Sus and Crete. I just hope that they annex both. In the other one, Hosokawa is badly losing, but maybe Kutai will surrender an old core to Orléans. All in all, the first years were difficult, but while the navy is non-existent, the economy is back on track and the army counts 43 regiments again. And sooner or later, the pretenders are going to cross the Adriatic, and will face the army's new-found might. Louis V's kingdom is a force to be reckoned again.

QyAv4rE.jpg

A force I sadly have to leave. But the next nation looks very promising as well. Bengal, long-time ally of Manchu and one of the bigger players in the HRE.

Well, you've certainly improved the situation of Orleans, yet I feel that Nupe may be a threat in the future.

Let's hope Bengal is a success!

Nupe is only a threat thanks to their big brother . France isn't very rich here. But still, it is true.

Well at least that cardinal in Istria finally got his head straight in time to become Pope. :D

I think you hit a new record for stab hits in one update. :p

How dare Venezuela take land from Ning! No touchy!

No, how many were there? Not enough to let Orléans collapse at least.

Venezuela probably thought that China started to leave the chaos phase and moved in to prevent that. They are the Russia of the East - but without the catastrophic consequences after their invasion.

Chapter Twenty-Seven: The Saxon Tiger

Welcome to Bengal, most pious Protestant nation, ruled by the benevolent king Islam III von Nostitz... right... Well, Islam is not the youngest ruler any more with 63 years, and while he has enacted most religious decisions, the wave of obscurantism in the country probably comes from his name. He is militarily capable though, and with the Manchu at his side he has won the war that we are still fighting. We should be able to connect our divided country without problems.

IvxXwO9.jpg

Islam's heir Ala-ud-Din Firuz is not bad, a 2/4/3, and 46 years old. Some more admin points would be nice: Bengal is only behind in admin tech, and the inflation is on 21%. The nation has seen more prestigious days, being down to -51. I intend to change that. Being in the HRE and Saxon, we have German ideas, and full administrative, influence and quality ideas. The two first innovative and diplomatic ideas as well. As we have more mil points that we can spend, Islam has enacted the Liquor Act, for a small morale recovery boost. As I don't think this will be worth much, I'll repeal it as soon as possible.

MgfeeZv.jpg

Last part of the introduction, our allies are the same as those who side with us in the current war. The war that is already won, but has taken a heavy toll, causing a lot of war exhaustion and three loans. So I think it is time to stop. I'll get all I want anyway. Reclaiming both of my cores in Oberlausitz and Wittenberg as well as Böhmen. Huron is actually friendly to me, so I am getting them as another ally while I start rebuilding the army from its current 8 regiments + 3 artillery the AI has already started to recruit.

RtKfWHS.jpg

The reparations are put into repaying our loans, and the recovery phase begins. Algiers sells Constantine back to Pagarruyung, and Bundelkhand falls into the horde's hands. Demak on the other side of Eurasia gets badly beaten from all sides, goes bankrupt and has to make great concessions to Tafilalt. It doesn't bode too well for Connacht's base in Sumatra with their enemy regaining strength.

NVYHukt.jpg

The army rebuilt to 17 regiments, the second Colombian colonial war ends, and the Jalayirids aren't caring much for JC's original plans. Only Pirara goes to their colony. They prefer to weaken their enemy directly, and return three cores to Aïr. Maybe it was not a bad idea to keep them after all. Finally at peace again, Champa's merchants immediately set out into the world, land in China and bring back porcelain, silk and tea. Islam has no time to enjoy this new beverage though. The Manchu declare war on Kanem Bornu, willing to take the last bits of Denmark not under their control. An easy war – wouldn't the Jalayirids be defenders of the Catholic faith and Kanem Bornu a stubborn adherent of this heresy. I answer the call.

68GmL26.jpg

In raw numbers, this war doesn't look good – but one has to keep in mind that the Jalayirids are a global empire – their forces in the colonies are substantial. The Manchu on the other hand just started colonizing and have most troops in Europe. The first sign of the Iberians is a 45k men strong army, which marches through the HRE until reaching Lübeck – where most of the Manchu army beats them back. The enemy retreats, and we resume the sieges.

QPaOsDK.jpg

While they are routing, they meet one of Islam's relatives, who willingly tells them all they want to hear. High treason maybe, but it is not as vital as it seems. More interesting for me are the peace deals that benefit Orléans, as they annex Crete and get a bit of Kutai back, and Brandenburg, seizing most of Korea.

Ji5cKA9.jpg

As Crete is gone, Jumduq I appoints Garhwal as new elector. An OPM in Sundgau. Not supporting me, sadly. But no time to think about this – the enemy launches a new attack. Québec adventures into Ansbach, where they are wiped out. The same Jalayirid army as before gets lost in Asakura, where it attacks an equally lost Manchu army. Things look bleak, but the reinforcements arrive in time and the Iberians have to retreat.

zf19MrJ.jpg

For now, they do not plan any new Northern expedition, and the sieges in Kanem Bornu slowly progress. Hosokawa pays a heavy price for attacking Aztec, and the Swiss beat up Powhatan and Pasai, releasing Doughlat in Mainz in the progress. A juicy target... I fabricate a claim, and ally Keladi as well as Djerid, with whom Islam already has a royal marriage and who are an elector.

ofHhtYG.jpg

As Yeren diplo-vassalizes Westphalia, my troops are preparing for the war against Doughlat, and their superb drill and quality gets known far and wide. The quality of our generals is not so high, but it doesn't matter as Doughlat's army is smashed into pieces. With no ally, they flee into my adjacent territory and are wiped out. I settle for a siege, as Mexico seeks glory against Brandenburg and Connacht robs Aceh of 1250 ducats. So that's why they attacked Tripura. Robbing their allies and taking their land. Smart move of the South-Eastern Irish.

rbvrkSf.jpg

All of Kanem Bornu has fallen, and the Manchu are planning their next move. Invading Iberia. 22k men land in Navarra the 13th November 1704, and the Jalayirids aren't too pleased. The same 45k strong army as before, still without a leader, tries to chase them out, but fails and has to retreat. The Manchu reinforce their positions, while Bengal experiences an excellent grain year, leading to more available manpower.

lAB3geB.jpg

Mainz falls and is incorporated into Bengal, as Tafilalt attacks Connacht again. I just hope their fleet can fend off the enemy long enough to end the Tripuran war before striking at their rival. Overflowing with mil points, I hire a third general, but he's of no use, a 0/1/1/0. More beneficial is the South German Organ tradition. Bengal of course supports them and their... exotic dancers. I don't remember South Germans looking like this. The low prestige of the beginning has already grown to +4, but more can never hurt.

XrePiUs.jpg

Champa, which brings in more and more exotic goods, starts the colonizers' second big landgrab in Mexico as they attack Hatakeyama. Over the next years, the others will follow this trend. Russia enters the Alps as it annexes Sukhothai, and Orléans follows my advice and ditches Xiu as ally. Yes, take revenge! Meanwhile, the Manchu have shipped their whole army to North Iberia, and have repelled the Jalayirids' first attempt to drive them out in Calabria. Don't they have any generals?

If they don't have any generals, at least they have an explorer. Ahmad Mahmud had made his apparition in the Côte D'Argent, and the whole Manchurian fleet has been sunk. But only after their whole army arrived. Bad timing. With 92k men, they try to push the Manchurians out a second time, but are again forced to retreat. My allies occupy Navarra and Soria.

In this period of inner peace, Islam III dies peacefully. Ala-ud-Din's first move is to cautiously invest in trade. He is annoyed that the support of Djerid isn't enough to gain the Imperial title, but there is nothing he can do. Mansur I of Bashkiria is elected thanks to their own vote and Garhwal's, Australia voted for Flanders, Yeren for themselves and Keladi for Ndongo who also support themselves. Without Keladi's support, the Elephants would vote for Bengal, but as it is I won't gain the HRE soon. At least Russia doesn't invade again, but starts to pick off the remains of Zazzau, starting with Wu.

The last battles of the Kanem Bornuan war are fought in León. The Jalayirids first caught Ganyong Feiya's smaller army and wiped it out, but only to be defeated themselves by the Manchurian king Ajige and his 102 regiments. After five years, with Kanem Bornu fully occupied, they cannot resist annexation any longer and are absorbed by the Manchu.

The end of this war means peace for Bengal – but si vis pacem, pare bellum. I have gotten good enough relations with Asakura, and manage a RM to get another strong ally. At the same time, my overflowing mil points are finally investable in Metallurgy (mil tech 25), which gives us a +220% ahead of time bonus. Give us some more time, and Bengal builds the first tanks. Anyway, the new royal mortars won't be used against the HREmperor, as the new one is our ally Ndongo, but against Pasai and its alliance – as soon as the Manchu have paid back some loans, that is.

1zNXLuJ.jpg

Russia finishes annexing their vassals, and Songhai, the buffer to Manchu, is no more. The horde really looks scary. The Jalayirids decide to blow off some steam after their recent defeat, and join Mexico's Japanese expedition. I hope it fails. But if my hopes prove as successful as my prayers, Brandenburg is doomed – the poor heir of Ala-ud-Din, Sher, falls victim to an illness. I didn't want to take a loan to pay for the medicus, and this is what I get.

XkoRPbU.jpg

Sher's death despite the prayer somehow lets Ala-ud-Din find solace in his faith. Pasai, feeling threatened – I don't know why, really – supports the king's newly found piety, and hope to avert their end. But to no avail – with the help of Djerid, Huron, Keladi and my big brother Manchu, I have decided that Pasai would be better off under Saxon dominance. The numbers in this war are fairly good representatives of the real balance of power.

lRhaVnS.jpg

Under the best of my three generals, Murshid Quli Zamindar, I decide to deal with Flanders while my allies clear the rest. Our high-quality troops from the next decade leave Flanders' army in Mähren not a single chance. As I head South to their Austrian possessions, the Manchu arrive, and prove that any resistance is futile in the two battles of Mainz. Shortly after, there is not one enemy regiment left.

AZaI7io.jpg

I see that Nupe is willing to ally Bengal if not for my offensive war, so I seal a royal marriage. If I get the alliance, then even Russia would be ill-advised to try anything against Bengal. Asakura arms their own Brandenburgian expedition, but soon has to reconsider they choice. Yeren attacks Nepal, devastated by Manchurian-Djeridi troops, and Asakura joins in their defence. More chances for Brandenburg to survive the Western attacks. My diplomatic efforts are being compromised by some morons who were dumb enough to get caught spying – but it is only temporary. Unlike the result of this war will be.

QAZtxK3.jpg

With the enemy slowly falling, the peace deals do as well. Goal is to take as much ducats and prestige as possible with minimal cost. Kham and Patiala cede nothing but their treasury and alliances. Nepal returns cores to Djerid and their cash to Bengal. Funny thing, Nepal only gained these provinces from Djerid at the start of this turn. Flanders abandons their Bohemian dream and are split in Austria. And Pasai gets annexed. All peace deals signed in time.

5YiFzHF.jpg

Nupe, unable to pull off a good naval invasion, settles for Sardinia in their treaty with Jharkhand. This ends my dream of an alliance with them, as they can choose a new rival – Huron. Well, at least Russia's next victim is not in the HRE, or I should have joined on Ndongo's side – it's Changsheng again. The peasants get uppity, but I simply enforce more serfdom. They can't withstand an army, even less so an army from the future.

YuUaTBu.jpg

With the turn of the year 1711, I also have to leave Bengal behind, as I roll a three. I would have liked to stay, but the RNG prefers that I try a recently resurrected Tibetan nation next. So I look at a reunited nation, one that has strong allies, and a futuristic army. And I start to think that all I have done during that turn was watching the Manchu kill my enemies for me – no wait, there was Doughlat. Sadly Bengal currently has no heir, and Ala-ud-Din is not the youngest anymore, but I hope they can prevent a succession war between Manchu and Champa. Anyway, which one is that ominous Tibetan nation? Norway! Not a vassal OPM like the last time I rolled it, but an independent country. Let's see what I can do here.

Lol, I noticed the "South German" thing before I even read your comment on it. Definitely doesn't look right. :p

It seems like the Jalayirids really screwed up with their armies. They seemed to have the numbers at the start of every battle, but they lost most of them.

Looks like lots of opportunity for Norway.

'East German' would be a bit better, bit still far off...:D
Well, they had no general, and they took too long to react. Their fault. If they had sunk Manchu's fleet earlier, they wouldn't have had any problem and could have invaded Scandinavia easily.

______________________________________________________________________________

Chapter Twenty-Eight: At Midgard's top – or close to Valhalla?

Unlike Sweden, landed in Amazonia, Norway is on the roof of the world. Which is not exactly perfect for the fierce seafaring vikings, as their good naval NIs are absolutely useless where they are. On the other hand, the picks of the AI for its idea groups is very fitting for Muslim vikings: full Offensive, Defensive and Aristocratic ideas, and five Economic ones. With the tech level on 16/29/21, Norway is on par with the era in Chinese terms, even if it gets a -5% discount due to its neighbours. The 80 ducats assembled flow into the recruitment of two artillery and one infantry regiment, which will put the army at 8 of its 9 force limit.

1iEhxb4.jpg

Malik Håkon IX Thonmi rules a tribal federation with the Muslim decisions opened by the virtue of his 3/3/5 stats enacted, and through the proper exploitation of his serfs, he dreams of uniting Tibet. Having recently conquered Hindu Lhasa from Peru, Romania splits the Sunni country into two, a fact which general Håkon Haraldsson (1/4/3/0), without any allies, should change. At least we should be safe from aggression, as only Yatenga borders us as Sunnis, and their lands are far too far flung for them to plan any attack (any border fanatics should better look away). Why are we safe then? Russia is defender of the faith.

F7gCFNv.jpg

So I build up my army, and attack ally-less Romania in September. At the same time, Aïr annexes Canada, now also visibly a force to be reckoned. So strong in fact that its name has to be represented three times. Interestingly, as Aïr is English and Canada was Wallonian, there is a somewhat comparable situation to the Canada of OTL in Aïr – Anglophone dominance over a Francophone minority. Unimpressed by this cartographic success, Romania's 4k men head towards Lhasa, while my army converges on Changtang. While I have the numbers, I want to evade a head-on battle in the mountains against their better general.

jV5i6zk.jpg

Cyprus comforts me in these plans. My rival to the South says that no viking would just hide in the mountains as a Muslim. My answer doesn't fall on dumb ears. Saying that a crusader state who even has Jerusalem's coat of arms in their flag is a disgrace to God if Hindu provokes them even more. The Cypriot curse me in the name of their million gods, and declare war for Lhasa. Russia will have a word with them – wait. Russia? Where's Russia gone? They don't join my war. I can imagine that the great Khan died at some point, fact that I didn't think was interesting while playing. Well, now they aren't defenders of the faith anymore, and Cyprus faces Norway alone. Either that or they simply didn't care for some poor mountainous land on the other side of Asia.

Ovia2HF.jpg

To make matters more interesting, Romania's general is, unlike Haraldsson, quite competent in tearing down walls, and Lhasa looks much more likely to fall than Changtang. At least the angry Romanians scare off the Cypriots, who stay in Bhutan for now. Lhasa falls after 377 days, Changtang after 452 – but while the Romanians moved on to Gyegu, Cyprus stayed away, and I start retaking Lhasa. In good news, Asakura, preoccupied in Europe, has no time to invade Ningdenburg, and makes a white peace.

DWLR9xc.jpg

In bad news, the nobles are reminded of Ning's famously corrupt bureaucracy. Well, Norway has no such thing, but there are the nobles... And if the good Malik wants them to agree with him, he better pays. What Håkon has no choice but to do. He is equally furious that the army, due to cheating before to get three military idea groups one after the other, thinks that they have achieved perfection and invincibility. Well, I don't know about that, since there was not one engagement yet, but Haraldsson as good general should know better than to fall victim to enemy tactics.

0iFs7gZ.jpg

The Manchu in Europe decide that they have shared Scandinavia long enough and attempt to drive out Transylvania from the North Cape. Our former home... No time for nostalgia. To no surprise, Gyegu looks like it will fall before Lhasa does, and so I start an attack. It isn't mountainous territory as well, so Haraldsson should have enough advantages on his side to defeat the Romanians, what he does. Sadly, as he defeats Callimachi's force in Gyegu before wiping it out back in Lhasa, Cyprus managed to get used to the heights after a prolonged stay in Bhutan, and crossed the border, laying siege to Nyingchi.

syFXrSI.jpg

As Yeren tastes a bad defeat at the hands of Nepal's allies, Njord Egilsson thinks that the time has come. Having somehow found 45k men to support him, he claims the title of Malik for himself. Håkon IX is not dumb and knows that he can't win this fight for the throne. Instead, he puts the focus on the outer wars he is engaged in. Even if he will lose the throne, he wants to be remembered as a good, a victorious Malik. The first step is to annex Romania, after Lhasa has fallen into our hands again.

Ur0gd1N.jpg

0EkeYsJ.jpg

Orléans under Louis V pursues a similar path, and their chances are not bad to win their war against Kutai, Sus, Yeren and Aztec and take all of South Italy for good this time. In my war, I face a more difficult situation, but try to unite all Norwegians against the enemy. After bringing my army up to 9 regiments like Cyprus' one, I leave 7k under Haraldsson in Lhasa, while 2k advance into the enemy's lands. The Hindu crusaders take Nyingchi, but are paralysed there, caught between Egilsson's supporters and Haraldsson's army. Seeing the zeal of my warriors decline, I want to set a good example of faith and start converting Changtung's Buddhists.

tfIAVGj.jpg

Russia, instead of helping me against Cyprus, vassalizes Changsheng. Fine, I don't need their help! I have my rebels! Under Njord's brother Soren, one of their armies marches on Nyingchi, and attacks the Cypriot scum. Soren is defeated, but while he fought Cyprus, Haraldsson had reached Nyingchi, ready to deliver a blow to Plethon's men's battered morale. The Cypriots retreat to their exclave in Date lands, and I start to besiege their heartland. Turns out that they have pretender problems of their own, but much less than me, only 7k of them in Assam.

LqB2Fgv.jpg

Soren's army returns to Nyingchi and will relieve the fort of the enemy for me. Ah, it's good to have rebels. Meanwhile, Mexico declares their Japanese expedition failed, and verses an indemnity of 200 ducats, while Connacht more than fulfils my expectations. At the same day, they defeat Tripura, setting the base of Connacht Peru, and their nemesis Tafilalt, making them relinquish their cores on Irish lands. I didn't see that coming. Aceh's 1350 ducats might have helped in achieving victory.

BJcGSyy.jpg

The Cypriots take the bait I've laid out and attack the 2k men besieging Koch Hajo; Haraldsson's relief force then heads out of Darrang to push them back and continues its way to Silhet, where their resistance is broken. Covering their lands either with Norwegians or the pretender, things look bleak for the invader.

cDcrdUJ.jpg

But not only for them. Håkon, seeing the Buddhist ascetics he wants to convert, is reminded of Ramadan, and decides it is time to fast. Somehow, this sends out a wrong signal to the nobles. They claim that the country is doing exceedingly well, and want their share. Riiiight. Have you enjoyed a prolonged stay in Louis IV's Orléans? Just tell me, with one loan after the other incoming to bear the losses sustained due to a pretender army five times bigger than the Malik's, who have occupied half the country by now, Norway is doing so well? Open your eyes, you fools! Even if we are winning the war, the country is lost! Still, I pay them out, so maybe they aren't such fools after all.

69OOyk3.jpg

Hindu Zealots in Lhasa see the opportunity to rise up as well. Strangely, they are also led by an Egilsson – either there are many Egils in Tibetan Norway, or those who are there occupy all important posts. They manage to defeat Soren's pretenders, but Njord still has four other armies to enforce his will. Before he can do this though, Håkon IX manages to bow out with a glorious victory, the vassalage of Cyprus. All Egilssons push through their demands, crowning Njord, recognizing the Hindus and even the Buddhists who hadn't risen up.

The Egilsson dynasty is much more mightier than the Thonmis, and as such Njord, while not being the most ablest of Maliks, manages a royal marriage with Venezuela, followed by an alliance. If we don't have Russia, we have Venezuela to secure our back, not much worse. I help them against Huai, willing to get Taozhou, claimed by Norway. At the same time I attack poor defenceless Peru, as our truce just ran out. Cyprus will deal with the siege there, after Haraldsson put their 2k men out of their misery.

aatJVx1.jpg

Before leaving for Huai, I do my subjects a favour and smash their pretender's army. Under new Malik, the local magnates are favoured, as they are all Egilssons themselves, which leads to more stability. That Håkon was a much better Malik is quickly forgotten, as Norway, even more with their new general Tollak Torgeirsson (6/2/3/1), recruited after researching the cartridge (mil 22), looks more stable and stronger than ever.

E64D0q2.jpg

All an illusion. First Date, then Koch ally Peru, and join their efforts to defend the small nation. Thankfully Date is preoccupied in the West, what one can see looking at the infantry-artillery-ratio, but Koch is not. Just as the province bearing their name, Peru's only province, gets close to fall, they wipe out the Cypriot force there. Tafilalt's well meant subsidies of 2.78 ducats and the agricultural revolution in Garze don't help to overcome this loss.

kp2Ze3N.jpg

Torgeirsson's victory in Bhutan's mountains is better in that regard. He goes on to smash some fresh Koch recruits, but their army retreated far into Date land and will surely return. I restart the siege of Koch, and have to see that my engagement in Huai has been useless, as Venezuela just expands itself, not their good ally that did nothing else but seize Taozhou. But to be honest, I wasn't able to do much more. Better for my morale is Orléans' final annexation of Kutai. Good job.

W4w0WAs.jpg

As my men manoeuvre around Koch, scouting for the enemy, 12k Jalayirid forces in exile appear, under general Shah Walad Solaja. They probably arrived in Brandenburg territory shortly before Mexico made peace, and are now bravely marching all the way back to Iberia. You should better have recruited a general against the Manchu, then you may have won that conflict, you know?

Sh3vUOf.jpg

Torgeirsson's men come out victorious from some more fights with Koch's army, as news from home say that Manchu united Scandinavia. Not the only unity to celebrate, as the Hindus of Lhasa finally follow Allah, bringing religious unity to Norway. Sadly though, the Jalayirids start to beat up Sibir, and Date's forces have routed their Western front. Their artillery-heavy force now turns toward their Eastern front – mine. First they wipe out Cyprus' army, then they head towards mine besieging Koch – again, just after the siege progress turned positive – and simply overpower my army, outflanking it with artillery, an army not even led by Torgeirsson who probably couldn't bear to suffer such a defeat, leaving Njord Egilsson, general of the pretenders, in command. Not to confuse with Malik Njord.

XmFjRBO.jpg

The tables have turned in this war, and Peru is unwilling to accept a white peace. Norway will go down. But it won't get down without a good inner dispute. The Egilssons are complaining again, that such useless peasant leaders as Torgeirsson prove to be competent military commanders. Completely ignoring the fact that without him, the battle of Bhutan would have been lost most probably, and the whole war gone bad much sooner. Norway needs them all!

oOXVWsT.jpg

But Norway doesn't need me any longer. 1721 comes, and I roll a two, leaving a soon-to-be-defeated country behind. It has a strong ally now, but for how long? It has made gains, but will Norway lose them all? Looking at the peace deals Peru is willing to accept, that might be the case. Hopefully the next nation will know more success. And I think it will. But which one is it? You'll see after the world update.

Poor Norway has been overrun by them :(. And Orléans is much too strong for its weak period anyway - without the league war, I'd see it dominate Europe as HREmperor, but history had something else in mind for them - would have loved to interfere in that war instead of sitting in the Americas.

World Update Five: 1721

Again, fifty years have passed, so it is time for the next world update. Let us first take a look at the maps, in one piece or somehow strangely pasted together:

Europe:

TURAAkt.jpg

Some nations clearly start to dominate. Russia, Manchu, the Jalayirids, Champa are still strong, and Nupe, Orléans, Asakura follow. Yeren has passed its zenith after the Nepalese war, which means the HRE is still a hard-fought battleground for domination, with Bengal, now allied to both Manchu and Nupe, in a good position to do whatever they want. The Huron dominate the Eastern Baltics, but are relatively weak.

Africa:

RLr0WLL.jpg

Despite Pagarruyung's colonies, the Aztec seem to emerge as strongest North African power. The centre is dominated by Kara Del, Rewa Kantha and Epirus, and it seems as if the Greeks can push Serbia back a bit. Sokoto holds the horn of Africa, and to the South, nothing as changed; with Kangri South Africa and Champani Madagascar as biggest coherent European colonies, Russia confined itself to Beafada and Yarkand landed in Gabon.

South America:

qDSSGKU.jpg

The North and East of this continent hasn't changed much, some colonization happened, but that's all. In the South, Asakura made its appearance. But the most important change happened due to Connacht's invasion. Not only did they create Connacht Peru out of their conquests, they caused Tripura's collapse, falling victim to Cusco. The Dutch profited of this situation to annex León.

North America:

euisj13.jpg

This continent has experienced a lot of change. The second rush on the Mesoamericans left few of them standing, just awaiting European attacks. Strangely, Lithuania still sits on 15BT Puerto Rico. Only very few CNs exist on this continent: Asakura with the West Indies and New Asakura, the Jalayirids have California and Pagarruyung has Alaska. Latecomer in colonization, the Manchu aren't getting any foothold on the continent and have to be satisfied with Greenland. The American Europeans are dominating this continent, even if New Asakura and California are pretty strong: Mexico and Aïr, together with its own CNs Water and Earth. Since Portugal reformed their government, the natives of the East have been in a steady decline, with Aïr and New Asakura taking more and more land. The Inca have been left unscathed until now, even if they don't colonize, but Scandinavia started to take a role as native bastion, incorporating smaller realms after reforming, through vassalization.

North Asia:

kHJqbWp.jpg

Venezuela's playground. Even if Haixi regained strength.

Middle East:

aPRU7mC.jpg

With Russia coming from the North, the collapse of the Ashanti is the most notable change in this region. Khorasan and Katsina feast on its carcass, while Pueblo is also in decline since their meeting with Mother Russia. Bavaria, westernized, struggles to regain the lands of the rebels, and Serbia seems to slowly lose ground.

South Asia:

TCyez6N.jpg

Shammar has gained ground at India's tip, but still Date and Foix dominate the subcontinent. Both nations are currently at war with each other in Fezzan, but that didn't stop the Japanese from ending Norway's dreams... further East, Demak has crumbled to the foreign invasions, leaving behind a strengthened Dali, Luang Prabang and Tafilalt. In China, Venezuela's invasions have left their ugly marks, and it will be hard to hold the red menace at bay.

Indonesia+Oceania:

6RZXR7K.jpg

Connacht has managed to keep Tafilalt away, and colonized more islands as well as Western Australia, creating Connacht Australia. Demak's colonization efforts have stopped for now, while Tafilalt concentrated themselves on the Philippines. I just noticed that Scotland has a base on New Guinea as well, but that was most likely before their last civil war. Champa is the most present European.

Income:

iNV95fz.jpg

After the maps, time for some pages of the ledger. In terms of income, the Jalayirids are by far the richest, fuelled by their rich lands, their trade and tariffs. Russia and Champa follow far behind, and Aïr's new-found power is easily seen at their 4th place in income. Asakura, truly the Dutch of this world, may not be the biggest, but they are one of the richest powers. (should have taken the income ledger. Oops. Includes some random information that way.)

Score:

woT0DHz.jpg

evTIn8i.jpg

In Score, the Jalayirids have finally taken the lead from Russia. But both countries are putting more distance between them and Champa, which is a comfortable third. The Manchu and Asakura follow, and keep their distance, while Venezuela and Mexico are gaining ground. But none as fast as Aïr. In Score per month, they are ranked third – emigrating certainly did them well.

Armies:

r5uzNqq.jpg

U3CcKNO.jpg

Russia still wields the biggest army, but the Jalayirids are not too far behind and have much better technology. The Rebels are far over their force limit, but they don't have to pay their army anyway. Aïr also ranks good here, even if they could field much more troops, while Champa has fallen due to the colonial war. Khorasan, Epirus, Tafilalt and Orléans finally make their appearance on the first page as well. Compared to the force limit, it looks like Serbia and Foix have some trouble, while trouble might be brewing for Asakura – though as long as they are Aïr's ally, New Asakura doesn't even need to try. They seem to know it.

Navies:

h8kHJQ9.jpg

At least here, Champa preserved its supreme rule. The fleets of the following nations aren't even close to reaching Champa's might at sea. Aïr has massively built up its fleet from the few frigates under my rule, Orléans even more considering they had not a single one twenty years ago. The CNs also have strong fleets. Russia's pride likewise is almost at their force limit, what cannot be said of many others... the Manchu have taken their misadventure in the Gulf of Biscay seriously and abandoned their fleet project. Brandenburg might have had the pleasure to meet Mexico's or the Jalayirds' navy. Pagarruyung also has severe problems.

And now to reveal the next nation – Mexico! I'd say the time of the Mesoamericans is definitely counted. And with the Jalayirids on my side, I might expand somewhere else as well. But only after a vacation pause plus some more time – in around a month, I'd say.

Both Russia and Venezuela are quite terrifying. I pray for Ning's survival.

I'm glad to see both Connaught and Air doing quite well for themselves.

Damn rebels are cheating! How dare they not pay their army and go that high over the force limit.

Mexico looks like it'll be great fun for an update, even if I have to wait a month for it. :)

Chapter Twenty-Nine: The Luck of the Mexicans

Luck? Why? Their long and successful history? Not just that. No, the Constitutional Monarchy of Mexico has been truly blessed. Po Saktirai I of the noble MacIntyre dynasty has ascended the throne, a young prodigy, 16 years old, with 6/5/5 stats, set for a (hopefully) long rule, probably outliving his brother (4/2/1). (The AI will control him, so there's hope!) But no – the luck doesn't stop there. Mexico is allied not only to the Jalayirids since its independence, but has also added the second Western power, the Manchu, and Nupe to its list of potent allies. Pagarruyung and soon-to-be-vassal Ottawa complete their five allies. Terrifying, unlikely to fall victim to any aggression.

upgr3yh.jpg

Sadly, with the national focus on diplomacy, no doubt recently changed by the regency shortly before Po Saktirai's coronation, and the Risk Assessment Policy enacted, I may still lack admin points despite his genius. Not that I would need to care for AE anyway against the natives around me. I do hire a +1 advisor though to compensate, filling all seats with such men. Most Catholic decisions are active, and to crown the luck of Mexico, their trade income is just increased by 15%. I wish I had that kind of luck.

r69Wpil.jpg

The kingdom is not far behind in tech, and its Expansion, Plutocratic, Economic, Influence and Offensive ideas are full, with Diplomatic just begun. The economy is doing well, and Mexico's armed forces are impressive enough with 60k men under arms and 48 ships. Po Tathun Duong is also a capable general, what can't be said of our admiral, who dies before I can retire him anyway.

NLbkStD.jpg

The basic overview done, it is time for Po Saktirai's rule to truly begin. He is obsessed with conquering the natives around. Without waiting much longer, he invades Wanka and their pitiful vassal Abenaki, wiping out their even more pitiful armies without any nameable losses, and the Mexicans start laying siege. Ottawa is impressed by that show of force and agrees to go into vassalage.

2pL3sXW.jpg

Not willing to lose any time, the king looks North next. Close to his new vassal, his Gelrean protectorate lies, as well as Riga. Not much longer. Relieved from the sieges, general Duong assumes command over the Northern army, and meets as much resistance from Riga as from Wanka in Paiute. Would the Jalayirids not take Hatakeyama, I would have attacked them as well. But two wars are enough for now. The Manchu tell me they dislike this warmongering and break the alliance. What have I done to you? They are still friendly, and as soon as the wars are over, I should be able to re-ally them.

XR4p1BW.jpg

Ning tries their luck against Demak, and Wanka and Riga are both annexed, bringing Abenaki under Mexican rule as I replace their previous overlord. What a fall for the former dominator of the Nahuatl states! But I do wish 1.11.4 would already have 1.12's peace system, as I doubt they will be very beneficial. The Manchu are also willing to enter the illustrious circle of Mexico's allies again. So it is time for more wars against natives! I wish to connect both parts of Mexico at some point, so I have to advance against Sibir and its allies next. The only Mesoamericans not involved in this war are European vassals. Pagarruyung joins me, even if I had unchecked their box. Gives me the chance to create Pagarruyungan Mexico at last.

dyyYTM0.jpg

The war starts bloody. Pleasing to the Mayan gods... Weren't it the Sibirians who find their deaths. Duong, with the Southern army, marched into Sibir's capital, and slaughtered all defenders. You see where this is going. After Pima's army and Hainaut's meet the same fate, one year after the declaration of war, with minimal losses in battle, Pima becomes a protectorate, Hainaut ceases to exist, Sibir's South goes to Mexico and Pagarruyung gets their fifth Mexican province. Only one province from Champa stands in the way of Mexico's unification.

tZhSpjV.jpg

During this year, shady people offered their services, but with the king's genius, they are not required. But they are carrying light cannons with them to... enforce their will. The king places them on the battlefield (mil 25), and his new royal mortars might need to be tested soon. The Manchu have declared war on Kangra, and I comply to our alliance, willing to invade Champa's Mexican territories and vassals.

fiRphSF.jpg

The Manchu have already staged a grand invasion of Orléans. I fill my minor role by setting siege to Champa's possessions and wiping out its native vassals. Kangra falls into internal conflicts anyway, so Manchu will have an easy time if they want to. To pass the time, I again choose to wipe out natives, this time in Kiowa, as they didn't stop attacking my colonists. Now they will.

eIJLiUG.jpg

While the Manchu proceed to invade Italy, their German/Danish holdings are under attack by the enemy's alliance. This doesn't anger them in the least, as they happily continue their sieges. But while they are busy, I am not. Thankfully I am not in Norway any more, torn to pieces by Date and Koch after they suddenly realized they wanted to be Peru's ally, but I am still surrounded by natives – so war it is, against rich Scandinavia, its vassals and ally.

eEhq5So.jpg

The ambassador who has played a key part in keeping all those alliances is rewarded with very delicate missions, as the natives quickly flee whenever they sight Mexicans. Kilwa is wiped out in Natchez, Munster in Caddo, and Scandinavia's king resists Duong's charge as long as he can, but to no avail, as Mexico's vastly superior armies crush his opposition.

YXQlF5L.jpg

The Scandinavians retreat, and I deploy sieges over Scandinavia's South and their rich West. They try to sneak past Duong's strong army and attack 6k men in Utsetha, but Duong is close-by and moves in. With very few casualties, one of the natives' two strong armies gets wiped out. Meanwhile, the Manchu advance into Southern Italy, and the LC annexes Westphalia.

4yoee9X.jpg

With an all-artillery force, Scandinavia tries to stop reinforcing Ottawans from entering their land. While the troops are initially even, Ottawa is westernized, and 4k Mexicans stand ready to reinforce. Their strange army composition doesn't give any protection to their cannons, and their primitive cannons will serve as material for new royal mortars.

t1AG9qo.jpg

The Jalayirids take five Dutch provinces, base for a future Jalayirid Peru, as Scandinavia is forced to a last stand in Tennessee. Duong proves as pitiless towards the natives as his king, as the enemy faces much higher casualties, only to be taken out for good as they flee to Yuchi. With their troops vanquished, Scandinavia faces a complete siege of its land.

qe7cozi.jpg

Po Saktirai sees the successes of his army, but isn't entirely content with its structure. He launches a great military reform, bringing a lot of benefits to both army and navy. The new military has problems at first though, as the iron ore proves poor in the mines.

V46NdTv.jpg

The Manchu, with most of Denmark occupied, finally decide to turn their attention home again. Orléans has to pay reparations and annul all treaties with Champa. While bad for them at first, this means they can ally the Jalayirids, the strongest nation around. Not too bad for Orléans after all. The peace I make with Scandinavia has another quality. Not willing to overextend, I can only take 14BT Satuskhdin and some minor gains, cutting Scandinavia into three parts and bringing Mexico to 99% OE. All of it will fall into Mexico's hands sooner or later.

YyULiWf.jpg

As another step of the reforms, I research the Threedecker (dip 25), while the Manchu crush the enemies in their homeland and start freeing it from occupation. Date also vassalizes Peru, which shows me its motivation for saving it from Norway. I'd rather have had them leave Peru alone. I also institute a war cabinet, the third diplomatic idea, what some particularists take as pretext to rise up. Duong has a word with them. More impressive victories.

QSaGgkB.jpg

The particularists haven't had the pleasure to experience it, but now I can upgrade my troops by the research of Light Infantry Companies (mil 26), which I devote entirely to the offense. Po Saktirai's reforms bring the military a decade ahead of time (+170% cost). Though there is no worthy opponent for these elite troops around. Instead, the colonization efforts in Kiowa end and they begin in Mengkonkia, as Afghanistan declares its independence from the collapsing and bankrupt empire of exclaves, Yatenga – causing them to splinter into even more exclaves, as their formerly stable heartland falls this time around. If I counted right, there were... seven parts of Yatenga, splintered all around from Kurdistan to China.

7IanrOh.jpg

With Denmark freed again by the Manchu, some action finally reaches Mexico, as Champa, clearly ruling the sea in this war, ships over 14 regiments, under nobody less than their king Po Thatun I O'Brien himself, against their former colony to the Californian peninsula. Before Duong can greet them though, grave and good news reach me from the East. The good news first: The Jalayirids have also declared war on Kangra, and are currently invading with 168k troops. Bad news: Venezuela is pushing more into China. Ning just has time to make peace with Demak, but their ally Tafilalt chooses the coward's way out. Damn them.

SvcvHYm.jpg

Scandinavia converts to Reformed in hopes of further Westernization and friendship with Aïr, but 32k Totemists rise up to prove the king wrong. Doesn't look like if they can stay Christian for long. On the other side of Mexico, Duong has finally engaged Champa's army, and the elite troops strike with full force. Mexico's luck appears again, as nobody escapes, not even their king. The hated Champani should take extra precautions if they ever dare adventuring into Mexico again.

66JFlpb.jpg

After the battle of Cochimi, another skilled statesman appears. He has some genius idea of what to do with Po Thatun's head... use it to create another long-lasting alliance to truly make Mexico invincible. I am intrigued – the proposal involves getting New Asakura to share the same sentiment to their overlord as Mexico does – bitter rivalry. I support their independence. It also presents an opportunity to move against Aïr, Asakura's long-time ally – who they are now transferring trade power to. The migration really made them very strong.

GbpcP6k.jpg

I believe that the Champani fleet, that hasn't even once bothered to blockade my ports, has other fish to fry, and as such look for a way to satisfy the incredible desire of AI-controlled former CNs to get their share of Africa or Asia. I am already at war with Kangra, Mong Yang's protector, and Orléans has other problems, so I declare war on the Kongolese. Taking 20k men into my ships, I start moving South. This is when the 1st January 1731 dawns.

FnUr9hB.jpg

I don't want to leave lucky Mexico, but the dice have something else in mind. I roll a one. Sad, but Mexico will have to continue without me – with their luck, I don't fear anything. Instead, I look forward to the next nation – Kiev? No, they are in an even worse position than last time! I roll again – and get one of the youngest nations of this world. Connacht Peru. Not too strong, but certainly interesting.

5Rz056o.jpg

Sorry, forgot to include CP... Look at the World Update . Glorious five provinces!
