The game will crash when I attempt to start it with optirun on manjaro linux (kernel version 4.19.79-1). The launcher works fine.
Running without optirun works fine, but is too slow due to no GPU rendering.
I believe this issue has been introduced by a recent patch, because my setup (using optirun) has been working without problems before.

Game version is v1.29.2.0.

In the error log, I get the message of the title: "glewInit failed: Missing GL version"

When I run: optirun glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version" , the output is: OpenGL version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 430.40
When I run: glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version" , the output is: OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 19.2.1

I believe the same thing happened in this post: "Fedora 30, game crash at startup since new launcher" (apparently can't link this directly due to this being my first post), as the error message is the same.

Your error messages them to be a little different than the other user. And you have an NVIDIA card while the other user has an AMD graphics card.
How exactly are you using optirun? Have you tried to run eu4 with optirun from the command line without going through steam?

Did you try to switch between the different display modes(fullscreen, windowed, windowed fullscreen)?
Did you try other ways to use your NVIDIA GPU? I found the following possibilities:
  • disable the intel gpu in the bios and only use the nvidia GPU
  • configure Linux/xorg/DM to only use the nvidia GPU, if the previous option is not available
  • use optimus-manager
  • use PRIME(I think this only works with the nouveau driver)
  • use nvidia-xrun
  • use primusrun
  • use "optirun -b primus"
The arch wiki has an article on nvidia optimus and an article about bumblebee which explains most of the options. At least some of this probably also works with manjaro linux.
If you try the options which require you to run the program in a special way(like with optirun), you should also test them with the eu4 executable directly, because it might not carry over from steam or through the launcher.

Thank you for your help. I managed to get my system to work by ditching bumblebee and upgrading nvidia-drivers to 440, and then following instructions from the "NVIDIA 435 driver looks exciting" thread on the manjaro forums.
