How about giving the colonial nations that formed historically (e.g. british canada, french louisinia, spanish mexico, etc.) the flags that they had in history? So instead of british australia's flag being half of britain's flag and the other half being the colour of the australia region, it would be the historical flag of british australia (which might be the same as the current australian one for all I know). Yes, I know that many historical colonial nations simply used their home country's flag, but many had their own flags. Wouldn't adding the historical flags that do exist, and keep it as it is for the rest, be a nice little change, without to much trouble?

This would be neat, though I'm not sure there's actually that many useful flags to assign. It looks like:
  • the British flags are no good (consisting of a solid field in one of three colours, with the Union Jack in the upper left corner)
  • the French colonies in North America all shared as single colonial flag derived from the Valois arms
  • the Spanish colonies all used the Spanish flag.
So it looks like the only colony that would get a distinctive flag out of this deal would be Portuguese Brazil (which did have a unique flag that was not a derivative of the mother country's state flag, naval ensign, or royal arms).

whaat? really? I knew that some used the home country's flag, but I had hoped that the historians on these forums would be able to pleasantly suprise me and dig up interesting and cool flags! :( oh well, I'd be happy if even these few flags were included..

I'm just going by a quick poke around on Wikipedia, so don't lose heart just yet. (Another look indicates that Dutch Brazil and Dutch Guiana also appear to have had distinctive flags.)

Colonial flags should have the mother country's flag in the top left corner (think Australia) and then a special background that depends on the colonial region.
