Big one. SEA MINES. Coastal and straits. Should be density level 1 - 5 and all vessels passing through have a chance of receiving damage, with vessels of the nation/allies of the nation who deployed the mines having a lower chance of damage.

As for the cities thing, it's stupid. Germany fought brilliantly in many cities - as said above. Even in Berlin, Heinrici's stand in the eastern suburbs with little but Volksgrenadiers was amazing for the last days of the Reich.

I think that rather than sea mines, sea fortifications (=coastal arty) should bombard ships which attempt to shore bombard the hex and/or adjacent hexes. Coastal batteries. The higher fortification level, the bigger need for more ships to supress the batteries, and larger chance for the batteries to damage/destroy ships.

I dont really understand the title of this thread, but the ideas of both of you do sound interesting. Not only for Gibraltar, but for all coastal naval warfare.

Hmm ... that doesn't make sense really.

No Axis ships ever sailed down Gibraltor or Suez.

Why have it possible in HOI3, but say its ok becuase my Tirpitz lost 25% health ...

It would be a sitting duck, having to travell damn slowly against a fort carved into rock ... yeah.

Theres a reason Axis ships didn't travell down these straights

For argument´s sake, imagine the following scenario:

With Gibraltar taken by the Axis, could the British and Americans have forced the Straits?

I would consider it a possibility ....

Shore bombardment should destroy coastal fortifications....

While I was in the navy I got to visit Gibralter. The Royal Navy took us on a tour of the tunnel system in the mountain. I must say that it had huge tall tunnel complexes and areas for HQ's/various units. So they should probably seriously increase the amount of coastal fortress amount to represent in game.

Let me ask you a question: Have you ever tried attacking Caen (Normandy) with level 10 sea forts? And you want to INCREASE the limit?

I think that it should be different in HoI3 than befor. The old 1-10 system is IMO not the best solution.
Gibraltar is not a prov that could be taken from sea. Thats why it also requires 'different' coastal fortifications.

iirc, Gibraltar doesn't have a beach in HoI2...

IMO:
Forts should have their own garrisons and use mp (it would resolve the (problem of large coasts)
Even if theres no beach u should be able to create coastall fortifications for sea bombardment (ex - Gibraltar)
Ships should be able to pass the straights - only the coastall artillery and enemy ships would stop them or make them suffer great causalites - even destruction (ex Gibraltar)
Coastal Forts as defensive lines and those for Coastall Art should be separated.
Forts should have their direction like Maginot Line (its also possible to expand them to other borthers and sides) and be assigned to provs borders

You are right, but then how many ships were sunk due to Atlantik Wall Guns?

None. How many ships faught the anti-naval guns at Calais?

My point is fortresses weren't destroyed by navies, and even worse if they were included in game it would utterly broken.

A level 10 fort protects Normandy, along comes the Royal Navy, pounds the for to 0.00, and the Marines unload completly unharmed.

This means in order to protect your fortifications, you need naval supremecy, but if you have that, why build coastal fortifications?
