This is my first real AAR. It's no world conquest, just trying to survive with Luxembourg. It's mostly about the writing as the gameplay is going to be boring
.
It was two days till Christmas. The roofs of Luxembourg City were covered with pristine white snow. The Grand Ducal Palace lay under a layer of snow as well. Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg was standing on the balcony of her office, looking out over the Pfaffenthal. Stormy clouds were gathering in the east, Charlotte hands holding to the cold, marble balustrade even more firmly. With dread she looked to the east, fore in the east lay Nazi Germany. Two years Adolf Hitler had taken control over the German masses. Like the rest of Europe, Charlotte felt Germany was on a collision course with war. Not if but when was the question she was asking herself. Hopefully her tiny Grand Duchy of Luxembourg could stay out of the turmoil. Her neutrality had protected her during World War I, but the rules of game changed constantly. One had to be on one's feet at all times. That's why she had called for her Prime Minister, Joseph Bech. One last meeting before the royal family would retreat to celebrate Christmas.
Charlotte turned around as she heard the door behind her open. Her lackey came in and announced that Prime Minister Bech had arrived. "Let him in," she said. "Yes, ma'am," the lackey replied and looked into the hallway. Joseph Bech, a 48-year old man with large moustache and a receeding hairline stepped through the door. The lackey closed the door behind him. "Your Royal Highness, you requested me?" he asked. Charlotte turned around and said: "Come join me on the balcony." Bech joined her on the balcony. "I'm worried Joseph," she said. "What do you see there, my friend?" she asked. "The Pfaffenthal, ma'am." "Beyond it." Bech finally got what she was hinting at and replied: "Germany, ma'am." "Exactly." She turned to Bech and said: "They used to call this city 'Gibraltar of the North'. I want you to take measures to assure it will once again be called that." "But ma'am, the Treaty of 1867 states we cannot rebuild the fortifications."
"My dear Joseph, the eyes of Europe are fixed on someone else entirely. It will not be a problem. Talk to parliament about this. Your are excused," she said with cold determination. "Very well ma'am," he said and walked away. "You can never be too safe," she mumbled to herself after Bech had left. She took one last look and then head into the room, closing the doors behind her.
On the street below the palace, Madeleine Linster was walking home. She worked as a maid at the palace. She lived only a few streets from the palace, in a quaint little house. While walking down the street she noticed clouds gathering in the east. It was a very unsettling sight.
Her husband Emilien was a contractor. When she arrived home she was surprised to find him sitting at the kitchen table. He looked up at her and said: "Oh don't worry, we finished early today. I'm still putting bread on the table." She smiled and sat down next him. "I need to tell you something." He grabbed her hands and in a worried tone asked: "What is it?"
"I'm pregnant!" she said positively radiant.
Next up is 1936, which will actually feature gameplay. Expect it sometime during the weekend.
