I've got a thorny problem. As King of Ireland, I thought up a grand plan to put my dynasty on the Byzantine throne--I was able to invite the eldest son of the basileus to my court, and then (being his liege), was able to matrilineally marry him to one of my kinswomen. His father promptly died in a suspicious accident, and not even by my hand! Unfortunately, the prince's youngest sibling was "born in the purple", and hence became the new emperor. Not a big deal, I thought--I'd just kill the emperor's daughter, and then the emperor himself, and perhaps the middle prince for good measure.

That's when I saw the problem. When I matrilineally married the prince, he went to the court of one of my vassal dukes. And my vassal, being unable to comprehend my great scheming, decided to name him the successor to the bishopric of Tuam, thus disqualifying him from the Byzantine line of succession.

How do I fix this?

There are several things you can do. As he's not a bishop yet, I believe he's still qualified to inherit the Byzantine Empire. However, should he inherit the bishopric, you could easily revoke it - taking the title away and making him an eligible successor again. You could also change the Kingdom's Investiture Laws to Papal - this would remove him as a successor to the Bishopric. You could revoke the Duke's title (or the County that contains the Bishopric the eldest son is to inherit) and then change the successor to the Bishopric. I'm sure there are more ways, but these are are the easiest ones I can see.

He's not bishop yet, but he seems to have been taken out of the line already. After killing the emperor's daughter, the line of succession became 1) the middle prince, 2) middle prince's son, 3) middle prince's daughter. (The middle prince does not have "born in the purple".)

I can't revoke a vassal to a vassal's title, can I? Revoking the county is an option, but it belongs to one of my dukes, and I'd rather not upset him too much if possible. (I'm running elective succession, which doesn't help.) I changed my laws from free investiture, so I can't (and would rather not) change them back until my king kicks the bucket. Giving him a county would work, except he'd take it with him when he inherits the Empire, right?

True. You can't revoke vassal's vassal's titles. My mistake. You could give him a barony or town to make him a baron or mayor respectively, which would stop him being a true 'bishop' and thus making him eligible for succession. Giving him a county would work too, but yes, you would lose those to the empire when/if he inherits it.

Giving him a barony or county should restore the succession.
