So my heir went on a crusade (was in a different court) and got himself imprisoned. Now the crusade is over and I can't seem to get him out. How can I?

Been saying this over and over: the AI should be made to recognise players' family in such cases and give opportunity to support, ransom or otherwise free from jail. I once had a king who couldn't get his own mother out of the jail of some count or duke in his realm. This is not realistic, nor does it enhance gameplay or prevent exploits.
Fully agreed with this. I don't play CKII as a simulation for world conquest, I play it as I enjoy RP my dynasty. I like to have a dynastic goal in mind and play as the characters are (ie if Character is kind I am very merciful, if charitable I give out gifts when I can afford, if Cruel I kill everybody but my family, if cruel & wroth then everybody is an option to kill etc). So even if it wouldn't help me with conquests or my empire I would like to pay to get my family members out of prison and such.
I believe plots have been suggested as one way to get characters out of jail. You could also always hope the "Character escapes from prison" event fires for him, but it's... rare. And can fail, which typically ends with the unfortunate character in the oubliette.
Got exactly the same situation. My heir (which I landed as count) involved himself in a revolt with a duke, got imprisoned and there´s no option to set him free. SUCKS and should be adressed in the expansion.
