Hi all, this is my first post on the forums and interact with the larger HOI4 community in general. I've had the game for over 3 weeks now and about 240 hours of play after a couple of years of watching HOI4 SP playthroughs. I was just wondering how to get into the MP scene as I've generally seen MP as a much more challenging place compared to SP and feel quite intimidated. What is the best way for a new player like me to get into MP without getting brutally slaughtered by more experienced players? Thanks.

@closethedoor20 ,

Welcome to the HOI4 forum and congratulations on your first post!

I do not play multiplayer, but you might want to read this older post regarding multiplayer and visit the HEARTS OF IRON 4 - MULTIPLAYER forum while you wait for another forum member familiar with HOI4 multiplayer to respond.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I do play MP and here are a few pointers:
1) Make sure you have a clean sheet when loading - clear cache and load it fresh - i.e. do not go from single to multi player. I don't know why, but if you don't you'll likely lag/time out/desynch and everyone will get incredibly annoyed with you
2) Be prepared to play a tiny minor - New Zealand is a great place to start to observe. Even bigger minors (RAJ/Brazil/Mexico) require quite a bit of skill and knowledge, so avoid them else you'll just have a lot of angry players at you
3) Save the game periodically so you can reload it later and see what everyone is up to, what template they build, how they're scaling up industries, etc.
4) Make sure you have a discord set up and join the game's discord. Be honest about the number of hours you've played and that it's your first MP - people will cut you a lot more slack if you do.
5) Follow instructions by your "leader" (usually UK for Allies, Germany for Axis). It can be a little tedious, but it's part of the learning process.
6) Be aware a lot of games can go toxic - there's a lot of nasty players out there (sadly), so if you can play with friends, that's great, but if not, don't take any abuse personally, just mute the offenders if you want.
7) Meme games (non-historical) are usually more relaxed than competitive historical ones. However, you might get destroyed early by a major wanting your land/bases/resources. So take your pick.
8) Finally, watch a few twitch videos first. It should help.

PS: Make sure you have 5+ hours to spare!

Remember to change your name in the MP lobby, if anyone see's a generic 'Player has joined the game 9 times out 10 they are banned .

I would also say its best to start as a commonwealth minor to have the protection of an alliance early game and UK can lease you anytime and his focuses can help you to.

The most importaint thing is to find the right peeople to play with. Along with everything else that has been said just play a minor, you may be required to anyway due to your inexperience. Losing isn't bad just learn as you go.

A lot depends on what type of game you want to play. Commonwealth can be alright in historical games if you don’t mind being a bit straight-jacketed into a narrow meta, but can be harder in ahistorical/meme games where there is a decent chance the UK abandons you and the Commonwealth. Some decently strong minor with some space/protection from the action, and no rigid meta like Brazil might be a good start.

Generally though, if you are friendly, admit you are a newer/less-experienced player, and willing to ask/listen/learn, your allies will likely help show you the ropes (on most servers anyways).
