I have several hundred hours in CK2 and would now like to play some EU4 too. Can you recommend a good YouTube series especially to get into the game?

Everything from Arumba.

As soon as you start yelling at the monitor whenever he makes a mistake, you're good to go.

In more detail: Arumba loves to overlook a ton of things and throw himself in situations you wouldn't expect him to land in, but he has the endurance to always play it out and since we all make a mistake at some point in the game, learning how to handle self-created disasters is more important than learning how to play if everything's going your way.

Darkfireslide has interesting topical videos.

Florryworry has amazing WC runs on his twitch (for example Jewish one faith world conquest).

You can probably learn a thing or two from those streamers.

People often mention Arumba in these threads, but I wouldn't recommend watching his LPs. Personally, I think he's arrogant, preachy, and generally not as smart as he thinks he is. Altorugh, he is good at the game, I wouldn't recommend him specifically because his LPs are not really suited to newer players. They are maths-oriented with information that maybe you'll want to know after you've learned the game and are trying to master it. I think that newer players should start with something more fun.

I like DDRJake, though I haven't watched any of his LPs in a while. He usually takes on interesting challenges, doesn't obsess over minmaxing, but most of all, I love his commentary. He can be brutally witty.

I'll second Arumba and FilthyRobot's tutorial series, especially if you're already familiar with Arumba's videos. I'd probably watch from Filthy's perspective though (I did when I watched them, that was my tutorial to EU4 and the series that made me decide to get the game).

I recommend quill18's tutorial series to get into the game, since it gives a thorough introduction into the base game without DLC. Once you get the gist of the game DDRJake's streams are enjoyable and informative. Streamers like Florryworry or marcoantonio are more interesting to see what 'advanced strategies' (i.e. breaking the game) are possible. However, their approach (as well as Jake's) are not meant to be copied by newer players, since their country management is very advanced and relies on tactics with regards to the economy and estates that might not be obvious to rookies. If you see one of those running a country through a phase with 200% overextension do not just assume that this is an okay thing to do.

Thanks for your tips, guys. I will check out the series you mentioned, most of them sound good. I can understand the criticism of Arumba – I have watched several of his CK2 series – but I think he's entertaining enough, although sometimes he can really drive you to exasperation. :)

As much as I like DDRJake's EU4 video's, I would not recommend them to newbies, but that's mostly due to him playing on Very Hard. Playing the game on normal ironman mode is still challenging enough, but completely different still.

Once you feel you have a good grasp on the game, I would recommend it.

I also can recommend DDRJake. Really entertaining to watch imo and also his country isnt always one tick away from collapsing, which is why you shouldnt be watching people like Florryworry yet.
But you should just watch the first 50 years of a LP of your choice to understand how to start and what to do in the beginning and then just play for yourself. This way you can learn a lot more ;)

yeah, as other have mentioned ... Quill18s recent Tutorial run and Arumba/FlithyRobot tutorial series are probably the least 'overly' advanced.

That said, with sufficient experience in CK2 you should be able to get going fairly blind, just revert the starting suggestion in CK2 about starting as a tiny nation and start with a large one in Eu4 ... say, Austria, Ottomans or the like

@Zaister When I finish my major, I will get back into the streaming/youtubing again since I will be unemployed for awhile... My approach is to play the game a bit slower than the usual YT and explain the game in a less technical/exploity way since I basically just show how I enjoy the game and how I use the games features to the fuller extent in a more casual setting...

I imagine the slower speed, use of features, explainations in less technical terms and simply playing the game for enjoyment rather than WC or exploits could be helpful for newcomers... And since it´s been month since I been playing EU4 I even thought about doing some easier achievements where I play as Ottoman, Austria, France or Muscovy... Could turn that into a beginners series...

My track record is a bit over 4k hours into the game, some quite difficult achievements (some when features made them harder) albeit not TTM yet... But that´s more about the tediousness over me thinking I can´t do it... Think it will be difficult, but given a few attempts I should be able to nail it I imagine :)

I would recommend playing a game as Ottomans or French to begin as they are too good to fail and you will learn lots of things playing them as they are very versatile nations rather than watching Youtube videos.

Haha, I have yelled at his CK2 videos already :)

Is there a series that would be particularly useful, maybe? He has so many.
It's EU4 so I recommend the newest series no matter which youtuber you end up choosing.

The game changed a ton over the past few years.

Quill18's series are good (not any from Twitch bc he tends to pay less attention and explain less, which is fine for Twitch).

I'm not on the Arumba train because of the obsessive min/maxing. Everything he does is based on the idea that you must exploit the numbers to win. Which is fine if it were fun to watch. It can help you learn, but that's up to your tolerance.

I stopped watching him back during the "excel spreadsheet livestream meltdown" during which he cursed out Wiz and accused him of being a "fucking liar". And then cursed out twitch viewers who said "just play the game". All because of a bug.

All because of a bug.

Knowing him it probably wasn't even a bug

But his explanations are superb and the disasters he puts himself into are situations you are in when you just start playing.

Which is ironical given his desire to play as perfect as possible, but at least you learn what you shouldn't do and - if you happen to do it anyways - how to get out of a sticky situation :D
