Getting Burned Out

After 20 completed GCs with 1.03b plus another 20 or so played to some length (and not mentioning the numerous pre-1.03b games), I’m getting burned out with Vicky. Don’t get me wrong, I love Vicky but it’s growing stale. (And believe it or not, I still have not played Great Britain!)

It’s not the bugs or broken things that are pulling down my enjoyment, but game play and balance issues. Most of it comes down to the AI. No need to go into it here (can the AI be improved so it can fight a colonial war?) but I really hope a patch is coming soon.

In fact, I’d be surprised if we don’t see a patch before the end of the month. No, I don’t have any inside information but there’s telltale signs, like the non appearance of some of the spammers —sorry, beta testers. Either they’re very very busy working on a patch or they all have simultaneous parole violations.

Anyway, if Vicky is never patched beyond its current version, I’d still rate it as one of the best games I’ve ever played.

I'm not burned out yet, but I agree that Victoria is among the best there ever was. I bet the next patch breathes new life into the old gal.

Maybe you should try MP. I hear it's a blast.

You could pick up another Paradox title, such as HoI, CK or EU2 (EU2 is my personal favourite).

Sorry to rain on your parade, but my reduced posting activities has nothing to do with any soon-to-be-arriving Vicky patch, but rather due to stuff going on in RL (yes, it does exist; go look for yourself! )

Patience is the advice of the day, since you'll be in big trouble if you start holding your breath in waiting for a new Vicky patch, I'm afraid.

Going over to MP is good advice; it makes the game a whole lot more interesting if you're growing bored of SP

True, but I have a hard time even going back to play a game of HOI. Without prestige and my precious, precious pops, it is just not the same.

Surf over to the MP forum and get in a nice, long term multiplayer game. It'll perk you right up In fact, I never play Vicky single player any more, it's easy/boring - but MP makes it an amazingly different game.

Well no matter how good a game is, one is going to get burnt out on it sooner or later after continous play. Twenty GC in a row is pretty impressive IMO for a playing streak. As much as I do enjoy my Paradoz games, I don't play anymore then a couple full lenght scenarios in a row for any given one. Sometimes for a while I will play some other game I own before going back to Vicky or EU2, or CK, but I always go back eventually. This way I don't get burned out perminately on the games.

My master plan was to tour all the nations I wouldn’t normally play (UK, Russia) in order to prepare for MP, but I don’t have the time, or the kind of time that enables me to commit to an MP game. In fact, I posted in the MP forum about a game but I find I really can’t be counted on to host (others with children will know what I mean). I may try subbing in other MP games.

As for a patch, it occurred to me that the testers may be spending all their time with HOI2 rather than Vicky but I’m leaning toward the parole violation theory. I think that’s what Rafiki is referring to when he mentions RL.

Anyway, while not holding my breath (playing HOI 1, Ghost Recon, and Anno 1503) I still expect a patch before month’s end.

Johan said he had made out a new Victoria beta patch for in-house testing the other day (when he released the new EU2 beta). I expect they are testing the hell out of it, and other possible patches that may have been made after that. Probably at least one month away from 1.04.

But a patch will come out when it's done. And it won't be late, and it won't be early, it'll come out when it's meant to.

My sympathies... Last night, our "big boss" decided he wants to be cuddled all night, from about 12AM to 2:30AM, I had to hold him, whenever I put him down, he wakes up and cry, pick him up, he may fall asleep again within 2 minutes. My wife took the shift before 12AM, at 12, she needs to sleep and handed him to me. We still take turns sleep at night, at least it's only 2.5 hours last night, 2 nights ago, my wife had 3-6AM shift and I took over after 6AM.

Where do they find all those energy....

Oh, honestly, I don't think tour of all nations are needed for MP. You should sharpen your economic skill though as economy in MP can differ in SP, with shortages to be expected but you still have to build up your nation, both economically and militarily. Failure to do so can be hazardous to your nation's health, unless you are very good at diplomacy and have strong nations at your back.

I, on the other hand, have no life My reduced posting is all due to betasing these days, although HoI2 gets a lot more of my time than Vic does since it's being build rather than just patched.

Well, I'd say I am getting burned out on real history more than the game engine. I mean, how many times can you conquer the world as -
Russia in EU
France in EU2
USSR in HOI
Prussia in Victoria (the best of the lot to date imho)
plus the other nations all across (kinda liked Timurid...heheh)

Hmm, well, maybe CK will provide new insight into Earth History....

One of the things that is different in MP is the need to be able to perform multiple task during a war without pausing (as pausing is not fun for other players).

Trying to win the 1914 game on slow or below normal without pausing should provide good practice

Nothing wrong with getting burned out. You got your money's worth of entertainment from the game and there's a lot more out there to play.
