ok, i'm just getting back into HoI after a long absence with Victoria, back to EU2, some gran turismo, etc. and had a few questions on how things work now.
i played a game first as germany. cake walk through poland, of course, but france gave me a bit of trouble. nothing that couldn't be overcome but it was kind of surprising. very nice to see. i had italy, bulgaria, croatia and hungary as allies, and i took over the czechs, romania, and yugoslavia. then comes the red menace. i attacked russia in summer of '41, but we just kept trading territories back and forth and i couldn't push past the marshes, except for one failed assault on moscow. russia cut through southern poland and was threatening the fatherland, although not with enough units to make me worried. italy lost rome, which i got back for them, but the entire southern half of italy was in UK, greek, and south african hands. i've never seen the allies coordiate and assist each other so much. i counted that game as a loss as i couldn't gain any ground in russia and was starting to loose too many units. my main problem was that i teched up way too much in pre-war, and didn't have enough units when the fighting came.
on to my general questions:
1. Wasn't there some sort of flak bug with AA guns in that techs that increased flak power didn't work properly? did this ever get resolved?
2. puppeting. do your puppets send you excess materials, such as steel? i thought i read once that they did, but not sure if this is the case. in a case like norway, it's easier for me to puppet them and let them defend themselves while i can get some of that steel they have in narvik, as long as i keep them tech'ed up.
3. does the winter specialist work yet? or is it still worse than having no leader at all?
i'm sure i'll think of more to add later as i wade through my second game. it's going much better, as i produced way more infantry and tanks prewar, and kept the luftwaffe and u-boats fat and sassy. i had to go to bed last night (average sleep time since i got back into HoI, 3 hours a night), but i saved the game at june 1, 1941, ready to attack the soviet union.
