I also need to check that this new fantastic machine has DirectX installed.

I donnot believe you need to worry about that. That is the good thing about Windows 10 and Steam.

OK but what happened to the "CD key" I guess I don't need that (?)

That is a legal matter of how to (in one sense or the other) you purchase AoD.

Not exactly. But Andrew T has fixed me up. Need to sync Owned Items. Easy... but takes ~1 hour (sounds like we excavating for more fossils :D).

Also, he explained Paradox has not used codes/keys (or whatever he wrote) for years.

So, I am syncing. Need to see what happens next after I can save. It's kinda weird having this process going on without any feed back as to progress or when done it seems. But just will keep wiping the mud off my windshield as I shift into bull-low and eventually should reach the destination.

EDIT: Nothing wrong with the system... just the directions how to use it. The link that Andrew T sent gave the needed explanation how sync works. Notice that I have reversed my 2 owned items from before (was as Pang has it). But saying "It takes about an hour" and no feedback (that I am aware of) when done is kinda "non-plus". I'll just check Steam in an hour.

I'm still working on the assumption I can get 1.12 free from Steam. If so, that's really big of Paradox and Steam considering neither ever got a peso from me. Of well, I suppose I have kept the forum "exciting" all these years.

Steam installed and updated. Only thing was I didn't get confirmation like "You have successfully installed...". But I watched it go last step "extracting package" I think, and then the window just disappeared. Anyway got Steam folder in Program files.
Find the game in: Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common. You can move it. I did.

I think I may need that CD key. How to get???
Don't think you need.

I also need to check that this new fantastic machine has DirectX installed. Would it be easy if one of you guys just came and visited me in the Philippines! I'll buy all beer! :)
No need. Display the Rundialog using Windows+R, type dxdiag and tap OK

The game isn't there yet because Steam does not show it in my Inventory. Turns out this is becoming quite the lesson how hard it can be to accomplish some things.

AndrewT was great and directed what needed doing on the Paradox side. That is 1) Link to Steam, and 2) Synch Owned Items. The first I figured out, the 2nd I had no idea about because... what ever.

Now - about my new difficulty at Steam - well, searching their website it seems obvious I will have nothing at Steam until I pay the initial $5 fee (put funds in my Steam Wallet). Hence, if I ever advised anybody how to do what I am trying to do, I would include this vital tidbit.

What a run around! So I purchased the minimum button on Steam as they didn't have a USD$5.00 button. Rather they had a 200 Philippine peso button. I could have told them that doesn't make 5 "Greenbacks". So then it stated my account has 3.79/5.00

Well, I had to do 2nd credit card purchase to buy the minimum needed to avail of all Steam features (USD $5 but no button for that amount). But really, how crazy there were only various value "purchase buttons" and no way to just input the desired exact amount. Rather important if international purchases and currency exchange apply. Why do people even design things like that instead of just having put in a button that charges $5 (and let the bank convert and charge the customer appropriately)? Heck, even I designed price buttons on my website that accepted international payments. Its not a big deal.

Anyway, trying to get my AoD latest version "for free" has now cost me USD$7.58 …. and my Steam "INVENTORY" states I still have nothing there. And that is after linking accounts and synching my Paradox "Owned Items".

I suppose next I need to just buy the game. That would have been cheaper. But AndrewT confirmed I do not need to buy it. Anyway, I did ticket to Steam and am sure I will get the desired download eventually. :(

So I am lost in the void between 2 portals. Paradox confirms I am linked to Steam and all OK at this end.

But Steam replied:
>>>To access all features of Steam, you will need to spend at least $5.00 USD within the Steam store and I see that you have added enough amount to remove the restriction.
As for the game, it sounds like you got it from another website. I'm not seeing anything here so you will have to ask the seller on how to sync and access your copy with them to your Steam account.
If you have questions or if we can assist you with anything else, let us know.
Jumping through Portals,
Marc<<<

Very funny because I ain't jumping to anywhere. More like drifting into a Black Hole.
Back to re-opening the Paradox ticket.

You might be able to use your old CD key(essentially a certificate of ownership) to activate a game in steam. In that case you spending any money was unneeded.

I really donnot understand what you a trying do do, but sense that it is a waste of time. If you still have your CD key, than simply use it.

I bought my game from Gamer'sGate. I registered it on Paradox. That is why linking Paradox account to Steam does not work. BTW, Paradox has stated they don't use CD keys anymore.

But as regards the CD key that was on my Gamer'sGate AoD, that might work. But I don't know how to find it, and Gamer'sGate are out of business, right?

What I am trying to do Pang - SIMPLY - is install v1.12. But, OK, if you think that's a waste of time, perhaps I won't bother.

Actually, I will install it. I hardly am a quitter - especially when things get tougher. Or you never been in the marines?

However, it is nice to realize that the problems I ran into were there all along with no input from me. Now, maybe Paradox staff will find a solution. They have been very professional throughout. And as regards money spent on Steam, hey, I like to join that community anyway for MP sometime. So, there's far more issues than the simple way you paint it.

Nothing that indicate that gamersgate is out of business. IIRC as long as you got AOD from gamersgate you can still access it from that site. It seems that gamersagte no longer sells paradox titles at least not the old titles.

I can see my old AOD on gamersgate. I no longer uses g.gate, but steam and gog.DOTcom

No, i refered to some way of purchasing i cannot comprehend nor bother to comprehend. I refered to the strange parts before installing.

Installing is the easy part after you have purchased AoD on Steam. Using a valid CD can be one way to do that. But once you have purchased the game, than steam will simply install it. This part is not troublesome.

Well somebody had posted it wasn't. But you right.

IIRC as long as you got AOD from gamersgate you can still access it from that site.
Found my game at Gamer'sGate and I see it has Activation Code. Now, I assume that's the CD Key.
So let's back up. I should give the Activation Code to Paradox or to Steam? So glad you got this issue headed out of the black hole. :)

I can see my old AOD on gamersgate.
Yah it's neat. I can see it too. And I can download from v1.03 to 1.08.
Also I see where it says >>>GET THE MANUAL & PARADOX FORUM KEY TODAY<<< but no link in that text.

So do you know if my Activation Code is the CD Key? So many different terms!

No, i refered to some way of purchasing i cannot comprehend nor bother to comprehend.
And if you can't comprehend it you might allow room for understanding how more confusing it could be for someone not in your shoes. Fortunately, I don't have difficulty with the "nor bother to" part. That's easy if one has empathy. :)

I didn't buy it on Steam either. I think mine was from GOG too. I was able to register the CD key on Steam though. :)

Steve, are you sure you bought from GamersGate? I wrote them for help how to link to Steam, and Gamersgate replied:

>>>You purchased DRM free copy of Arsenal of Democracy it has nothing to do with Steam store. You can download the game directly from your GG library it doesn't require a serial key.<<<

Unfortunately, they did not answer my other questions; 1) Is there CD key?, and 2) Can it be linked to Steam?

But I don't know what "DRM free copy" means.

I believe Steam is a game retailer. I'm not sure why they would link to their service a game you did not buy from them...?

Yes, they are very much a game retailer... and more.

I'm not sure why they would link to their service a game you did not buy from them...?
1) Vitality says he did it.
2) Pang says it just needs the CD game.
3) Paradox links their AoD game to Steam?

Anyway, I am still waiting for Gamer'sGate Help to answer as they should be the ones that help their clients link to Steam, if possible.

However, you quote my >>>But I don't know what "DRM free copy" means<<< yet don't answer it.

Well, the devil is in the details. My exact formulation is vague on purpose, because i donnot know all the details. But i think there is a more fitting approach to your situation.

And I can download from v1.03 to 1.08.

1.02 or 1.03?

The exact version should not (really) matter. I suggest you get a clean copy of 1.02(or 1.03), then install 1.11 RC5 and then 1.12 set 10.

Probably. I was only kidding in other thread about "being cheap". It is only a few pesos to buy it from Steam - and that is most likely what I will eventually do. But I'm in no rush currently greatly enjoying my Red Army counter attacking... although issue might be in doubt.

As regards Gamersgate Help, they haven't responded yet. The whole thing has become more an issue for me now (to learn what really is the truth) than any practical reason (and just buy AoD from Steam). There is still the outstanding claim of Pang's "Using a valid CD can be one way to do that". Of course I doubt he has any idea what might be a valid CD key applied to a Gamer'sGate game... or if one even exists. The point for me is that is was not my lack of nerd skills all along, but only it doesn't work as per what Forum and Steam actually do currently. Last chance is a working solution gotten directly from Gamer'sGate, if possible.

Yes there is a devil; and I don't think you have a clue if a Gamer'sGate sale comes with a CD key, and if that would permit linking that game to Steam. Furthermore, what was in the past does probably not apply now. Indeed there is a more fitting approach, but I am in no rush, and right now my only intention is to get to the bottom of this mess, so we know the truth. We already learned that Forum no longer gives CD keys, right?

I suggest you get a clean copy of 1.02(or 1.03), then install 1.11 RC5 and then 1.12 set 10.
Thank you for your suggestion but you don't understand your student or you would not make such a terrible suggestion. Past history has proven less than expert computer ability. Yet you would recommend he do 3 installs when for a few pesos buying AoD new then lets Steam install v1.12 "automatically" and also takes care of all future updates. Who knows how many more updates you might cause to this game. :D

EDIT: But which is Set 10? Can you relate that to what Steam is selling which - contrary to your earlier posted - is two different V1.12 (Beta 4 and 5, IIRC). I would just naturally assume that one should only ever buy the latest version, so it does pose the question of why is Steam even offering to sell 2 different BETA versions? It is these kind of things that make computers far more challenging than is necessary. I call it "bad design" to make smart people feel they must be a dunce.

Gamer'sGate did reply (3 x actually):
1) Digital rights management (DRM) is a tool to protect copyrights for digital media.
This tool limits the copying and use of copyrighted works and proprietary software.

2) Your game is DRM free which means it doesn't carry any DRM and you can download it directly from your GG library and you don't need a serial key to activate it because it doesn't carry Steam DRM as well.
Basically your version of the game has nothing to do with Steam store.

They repeated same >>>Basically your version of the game has nothing to do with Steam store<<< in other email, and I suppose that my direct question "Can it be linked to Steam" would be "NO". However, they never really answered that, nor other question "Is there a CD key".

So that probably settles that. In my case I think best decision is just to buy from Steam. Should make staying current much easier, and no concerns that perhaps I messed up some patch install. Boy, that was a long decision making process! :D
