I'm playing Sweden in the GC, but I never get a stable economy :(

When the conservative ruled Sweden, I had tariffs at the highest, everything else on the lowest, and high taxes, but I want to spend more money on education and crime fighting, but then I wouldn't earn money to finance my colonization, or negotiations. How to have a stable economy?

I hate that diplomacy is so expensive though.

Otherwise: I really have no clue. I generally just let the economy run itself because frankly I'm baffled by it :D

But I *almost* managed to win a war against Russia in my first game...

I had a cement factory which financed quite a bit. Also, I bought claims on Cameroon (two buildings, one slot free, and I built a colony there). But, my colonization was pretty big.

Edit: I had 50-60 as daily income.

You bought claims? I thought that the open negotiation costs were upped to astronomical levels in 1.01?

I find tariffs best for short term money problems only. Tax your lower classes to the maximum if you're short of money, middle classes no more than 50%. Sweden is highly educated, you can therefore promoted a few high population pops to clerks and easily conduct a high level of research whilst benefitting from using the clerks in your factories.

Sweden's main problem is in not having enough pops to man all the factories it would be nice to build :). Early on I'd pick one of the luxury goods such as luxury clothes and set up the industries to manufacture it. This will solve your short term money problems and allow you to increase education and crime spending and perhaps even implement one or two reforms. My best advice though is to look at invading Denmark as soon as you can :D.

I found the Swedish parties swapped back and forth very often each election. This was nice early on as it allows you to create some reforms when the laissez-faire party isn't in power, but then benefit from the lower militancy when the laissez-faire party is in (though at the expense of less taxes).

Well hope this helps.

Stable economy as Sweden is imo rather easy.
Firstly start by building a cement factory and then get artillery and explosives and fertilizer.
After that luxuries.
Ignore fabric, clothes and furniture.
As early as possible buy/exchange for the steamers tech from the UK or USA and build that in the same state as the clipper shipyard is.

Also never raise taxes that only results in mass emigration which Sweden can't afford.
Colonization shoudln't be your first priority it's hard as a major to afford it and developing at the same time and on the high aggression levels next to impossible to get any colonies due to massive colonization by the AI.

Also for a military use the mobilization as much as possible.
You can't afford in manpower to have a large standing army.

This is what I did too as Sweden :D. Mobilization on a large scale is rarely worthwhile after the first decade. Better to have a professional army with brigades imo.

Hmm, if it is as easy as it sounds, this will probably be fixed in one of the future patches, if you can simply field 120 african divisions in Finland. Sounds extremly bizarre!

Actually, non of those divisions were of any kind of African culture. :D They were all Finnish. Which addmittedly might sound a bit wierd at first concidering I had no soldier POPs in Finland and there were definetly not that many (ie. 1.200.000) Finns in existance.

But fixing this is on Johan's to-do list AFAIK.

Just controll your countries trade yourself, i find the computer doing a very poor job regarding it. At least in the 1.00 (giving me sudden high debts)

Anyways, getting a stable economy is no prob. at all...

I hope that does get corrected. Finland with a standing army of over a million soldiers?!? If the AI does not use that trick, then WC might not be so hard after all. After conquering 8-10 uncivilized nations, let the world feel the wrath of your 1,000 division standing army. :D
