Lucero

Las Islas Filipinas, Spanish East Indies
1787 a.d.

On one starry night at the colony's capital, Manila, the Archbishop of Manila welcomes a small fleet of manila-galleon traders straight from the Americas. On board the ship La Charla, were a few count of spanish colonists headed south for the island of Cebú. Among them was the ambitious Cristiano de Sangronis, one of the priests assigned to the Iglesia de Arcángel Miguel, a stone church set for completion on the southern end of the island Cebú.

As with the rest of the Spaniards in this colony, he had to learn the native language. Spanish was not taught to the population for reasons the Spanish thought wise. Cristiano became very adept in the native language quite fast and grew to be popular among the Cebuanos, especially the Cebuano women. As was for most Spanish men, priest or lay, merry making with the natives was not uncommon. Cristiano was not an exemption, and not long after he and a native bore a son, a mestizo (of mixed blood). Cristiano had dreams of one day becoming archbishop and having a son with a native, no less, disqualified him for all good ecclesiastical reasons.

He loved God and he loved his son, no law could stop him from doing so but he could not claim the son to be his own. Being on a remote island, nobody could careless though. He baptized the child and named him Cristino Mateo Lucero, after him and the brightest star, "El lucero."

And that there began the story of the first Lucero on the island of Cebú.

Laul

Culture group: Estonian. Means "song" in English.
The story behind it- in the middle on 19th century, government started giving Estonians family names. Quite often, peasants back then didn't even know what name to take, so one of the most common family names at the time was "Eitea" (dunno in English). For my grandgrandgrandetcfather, the name was clear as a sky- Laul, because when he sung, it sounded like herd of pigs being killed. So in the same manner that the big hulk of a man in Robin Hood got named Little John, my grandetcfather was called Laul. To this date, we carry the name proudly and according to our friends, the beautiful singing voice of my ancestor has been passed to us all. So basically, us Lauls singing karaoke would be the violation of Geneva convetion- cruel and inhuman torture. :p

By the order of his Imperial majesty, Frederick, holy Roman Emperor, King of Germany, King of Italy, King of Burgundy, and Duke of Swabia...

WHEREAS we bear the deepeste lovve for the Electors, Princes, Dukes, and Counts of our Lands....

AND WHEREAS We bear upon Our shoulders the responsibility of the Father, that is, to maintain the Safety and Security for those whome We doth love...

AND WHEREAS there have come to Us the vile report of Scandalous Behavior in our demesne....

WE THUS VOW to Repair unto our people a sense of Order and Justyce by Our Command.

As it has been brought to our attention that the acts of a single mann, one Anton Joseph of Schmalzgrube, have Harmed the Ability of our Princely Cousin, Frederick of Boehmen, to Render his Vassalage Duty unto Ourselves.

Specifically, it has reached our Imperial Dignity that this fellow has Made the Counts, Knights, and other Dutiful Subjects reluctant to Leave their Homes and Properties to Serve as Called Upon by our Royal Voice.

While it is Beneath Our Dignity to Describe in Detail the Acts Salacious which have been Reported, suffice to Summarize in General that this Anton Joseph is Suggested to have Scandalously Taken Advantage Of at Least Twenty Two Women of the Highest Honor, Sixteen Women of Lesser Honor, and an uncertain number of Women whose Honor is something Less than their Hospitality. To Accept these Rumors Would be to Validate the Dishonor of these Fine Families and Cuckold Noble Men of Highest Regard.

By Imperial Command we Decree that his Protestations Of Innocence be Accepted. His claim that he was Merely Comforting these Women during the Absence of their Husbands is Credible to Our Ears. We Accept therefor, the Honor of these Women remains Unsullied.

Rumormongers who Continue to Pursue their Trade on This Matter will Meet with our Sternest Rebuke.

In the Meanwhile, We Offer our Warm Congratulations to the Nobles of Bohmen. The Blessings of God upon your Houses, and especial Blessings to All the Many, Many Fine Young Princes and Princesses who were Recently Born in Complete Honor and Respectability; We are Certain that they will Carry Forward Unbroken the Honor of your Family Lines With Grace and Dignity, and Without a Hint of Scandal.

We Further Decree that by Request of Our Cousin Frederick, Prince of Boehmen, we have Granted the following Boon...

THAT THE PEACE OF THE REALM may be Enjoined, Anton Joseph Shall Hereafter be Known by the Apellation Anton Joseph LIEB. It is Our Wish that This is Recognized not as an Eternal Warning of the Now-Dismissed Rumors of his Conduct and General Untrustworthiness. Instead this Shall Be Seen by All as a Token of Our Favor and Affection...

AND WHEREAS WE DO SO FAVOR Our Cousin Frederick, that We have made A Place available in Our Retinue for that Anton Joseph Lieb. He shall therefore Accompany Us in our Crusade to the Holy Land.

RECOGNIZING that he Bears the Mark of Our Favor, Master Lieb shall be Accompanied at All Times by Two of our Trusted Sergeants, both to Protect his Body, and to Witness that he Shall no Longer be Allowed in Situations of Privacy with Women, such that may Unfairly Impugn His Honor. Shall he by Accident or Temptation be Lured from their Presence, We offer Our Imperal Hand Of Forgiveness for Whatever Acts these Sergeants might be Compelled to Perform to Protect His Honor.

WE HEREBY COMMAND AND SET FORTH,
Frederick, by Our name and in Our hand from the Imperial Court at Mainz, In this Year of Our Lord One Thousand, One Hundred, Eighty and Eight.

*Yes, my last name is Lieb, my family records place our origin in the Bohemian mountains on the border with Bavaria in the town of Schmaltzgrube, our family has used the names Anton and Joseph for as far back as records carry, and I'm a handsome, charming fellow. At least my wife says so. The rest might be some artistic license.

Aguilera

The name Aguilera comes from the Latin aquilaria, meaning "place of the eagles". The Spanish word for "eagle" is águila.

Aguilera is a surname which derives from Castile, predominant among Christian kingdoms of medieval Spain. The surname Aguilera, was originally given to a family who lived near an eagle's nest. Over time, villages in Spain were given the name Aguilera and the surname was bestowed upon people who lived in or near a placed called Aguilera. The most common origin for people with this surname is in the province of Soria.

Other theories talk about a German knight who came to Spain in the ninth century to participate in the Reconquista under the orders of Ramiro I of Asturias (790-850). The knight had an eagle on his shield, and was first known as El caballero del águila ("The Knight of the Eagle"), which led to Aguilera. The knight settled in Castile and founded a dynasty with the surname Aguilera.

The coat of arms is a sable (black) crowned eagle in an or (golden) field.

Original Post
Pelk (current family name)
Orginally (Pełka) Polish (I retraced this due to that one family member named: Pelk emigrated from Russia. The Pełka or Pełk orginated from the province of Galicia but at the time of the emigration that province was occupied by the Russians)

This name orginates from a Polish noble family living in the province of Galicia (the provinces changed ownership alot).
Pelk--> Pełk or Pełka is a Polish and Czechoslovakian form of a given name containing the element Pełka meaning 'army, truncheon'. The name is also spelt PELC, PELK, PALACKI, PELKEY, PALCZYNSKI and PALKA. The name was also sometimes applied as a nickname either to a thin, stiff person, or to one who was renowned for his use of the truncheon.

There are multiple Coat of Arms linking to Pełka although I do not know which belong to the family so I won't post it unless it is required.
This one is linked by wiki: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:POL_COA_Pełka.svg

Nevermind I found out that this name was already present in Crusader Kings, I apologize. I assume it will be present in CKII aswell.

Riska

Culture: Estonian
Actually there is´nt any big story behind my family name. The most I know about my family name is that it spans to somewhere in the 16-17 century when the Estonians where given their first family names, before that they had a first name only. Since that time my ancestors have kept living here in Estonia to this day being just simple folk, working hard to make a living and saving enough to endure the harsh winters that keep visiting every year after year. But my family has endured to this day and we will survive for centuries to come in our homeland that we call Estonia.
P.S - risk means the same thing in estonian then it means in english
P.S - And my ancestors added a "a" in the end because Risk must had been already taken. =)

Corbiera
(francized in Corbière)

Occitan name, meaning "Raven's nest" or by extension little mountain range.
Mainly originated from Tarn departement.

If the main part of the family were farmers with diverse fortunes, some of them travelled and became famous for their political engagments or their art (as Edouard Corbiere or his son Tristan Corbière)

Depsite of not being part of the higher classes, far ascendents understand old dynasties as Merovingians (Chilperic), Visigoths and Burgonds (mainly by women), Arabs (Abd al-Aziz ibn Musa). Of course, not after some generations.

Westerberg

Westerberg: originally coming from Sweden during a rebel revolt of poor peasants who felt oppressed by their lordling who had put a heavy tax on them. The name was more spoken than written as the small folk of the mountainous village were mostly illiterate, which was common for most of Sweden during the time period ( early 11th century). The first man to be named Westerberg ( or in swedish västerberg) rallied his towns men and told them he would no longer suffer the injust taxes of this unfit ruler and the village people flocked to his cause. He accended from a mountain located far west in Sweden, and therefore Carl-Gustav Lövsten, became known as Carl-Gustav Westerberg. At first he was able to win a few small battles against his oppressors but during the rebellions 6th and final fight 2 of his 4 sons were killed, and Carl-Gustav himself, was greviously wounded and captured. Although he was later beheaded, the taxation was relaxed and in honor some of the village peope adopted the last name Westerberg

Storskov

My familiy name Storskov is the name of a forest on the island Zealand in Denmark. It literally means "big forest".

My great-great-grandfather took the name in the beginning of the 20th century, because he was a carpenter and lived close to the forest Storskov.

Only 19 people in Denmark have the name Storskov today.

Easto

English, meaning from the East, a fairly rare name in Canada (not at all sure why though). From some of my family records we are descendent from Protestants fleeing the Palatinate after the Protestant elector was defeated and making for England, and then finally moving from London to Toronto in the 1920's!

House of Schmollinger

Every family has... obstacles. Every member of the Holy Roman Emperor faces these obstacles differently. Some use war. Others try diplomacy. Sometimes neither of those work.

The House of Schmollinger originated as the bastard branch of the House of Hohenstaufen. They did the sort of work for the Hohenstaufen's that needed... a delicate hand. If someone got in Red Beard's way well, they didn't stay there. Some would get sick from a mysterious disease and slip away into death. Others had accidents while hunter. The lucky ones went into exile never to be a factor in political life again.

Obstacles need removing. That's what the Schmollingers were for.

Robinson
Sept of Clan Gunn
Branched from Robert son of Crowner Gunn (George)

The name Gunn is thought to be Norse in origin, the clan claiming descent from Gunni, grandson of Sweyn Asleifsson, "the Ultimate Viking" and second son of Olave the Black, Norse King of Man and the Isles who died in 1237. Noted for their war-like and ferocious character, they were sworn enemies of the Keiths and in 1426 at Harpsdale, south of Thurso, a particularly bloody but indecisive battle took place, after which the Gunns settled mainly in Sutherland. George Gunn held the office of Coroner of Caithness, known as "Crowner Gunn", he was one of the greatest men in the country at that time and lived in magnificent style in his castle at Clyth. He was killed through treachery in 1464 while trying to arrange a reconciliation with Clan Keith. His death was later avenged by his grandson who killed Keith of Ackergill, his son and twelve followers at Drummoy. Feuds continued between the Gunns and the Mackays and the Earls of Caithness amd Sutherland. In 1585 the Earls attacked the Gunns who although fewer in number held their ground and slew 140 of their enemies. Only darkness prevented greater slaughter. However, the Gunns were later defeated at Lochbroom by the Earl of Sutherland. At the time of the Highland clearances in Sutherland, many of the Gunn clan were forced to emigrate to New Zealand and Canada.

It is believed that a member of Clan Gunn was among the party of Henry Sinclair, a Scottish Earl whom some believe to have made a voyage to the New World in 1398, traveling to Nova Scotia and New England. This individual is believed to have perished on this expedition and is also known as the Westford Knight. Often, it is claimed by enthusiasts devoted to this tale that the knight is Sir James Gunn, who reportedly traveled with Sinclair.

Lands were held in the Orkney Jarldom of Norway, County of Caithness and County of Sutherland

My mother was a Jynge, a named derived from a German jew emigrating to Norway called Abreham der Junge (because he was the youngest of his brothers). When he came to Norway the monk who scribbled his name for the census or whatnot they had at the time managed to write it a bit wrong and thus the Jynge came into this world.

After this we had long years of peace here in Norway, the Jynge´s converted to christianity and it would take some centuries before they would do something of note.

At this point (the 18th hundreds) the branch of that family that I happen to be a part of had moved into a small farm called Venstøp and were living a merry life, A mother and father taking care of their two sons. However things should soon take a turn for the worse.

One of the sons (the oldest) had the good fortune that his parents could pay for a good education, but only for him and not for his younger brother. He was thus sent off for the academy, where he was thought shipping and arts of the same nature. At the end of his education he joined a wharf, got the job as a captain and went off to the new world in his small ship to barter for exotic goods that he might bring back home for a good price. His father was a happy man knowing that one of his sons had obtained such a good piece of work, but soon that would change. One day a letter came to Venstøp, it was from the son and it explained that he did not trust the sailors on his ship. There were talk of mutiny and he suspected that he would never be able to see his parents again, which he did not. The ship never made it to port in Europe because of a mutiny onboard. The sailors turned into pirates and the captain was killed. The sea had killed one of their sons and now the parents were torn asunder, worrying about their other son.

For you see. When the youngest of the sons heard that his bigger brother was captain of his own ship he got insanely jealous, why should he be stuck in this godforsaken desolate country why his bigger brother traveled the world and the seven seas? No it would just not do. Filled with adventurous spirit he snuck aboard a trade galley aimed at The Mediterranean. He was just 13 at the time, but nobody really cared about his age. He was quick, sharp and did not mind extra work. He could have made it big on that trade galley, had it not fallen pray to pirates.

He was taken as a slave, working for the bey of Algeria. Luckily for him the same qualities that made him a good sailor also made him a good slave. He was sparred of the hard tasks some of the slaves had to go through and instead he saw to the health and the living of his masters. 10 years he served as a slave before being ransomed by one of the few groups engaged in such activity at the time, and luckily for him he managed to secure safe passage back to Norway and to Venstøp.

His father was no longer there though. It is unclear if he committed suicide, died of the grief of losing his children or if he simply just left, but one thing was for sure. For almost 10 years his mother had lived alone at Venstøp. In the meantime she had continued to put plates of food on the table for the youngest son, in hopes of him returning one day. The men and women of the hamlets close to Venstøp thought her to be crazy, but she payed them no heed. So when the son came home he was rather surprised to find food on the table set for him, as if he had never left. He spent rest the rest of his life in Venstøp, cultivating a set of trees.

When he had grown truly old a new family moved into Venstøp, the Ibsens. He worked as a servant for them and grew very fond of young Henrik Ibsen. Who later, after the death of the youngest brother, is said to have cried as his father cut down the trees that the youngest brother had spent most of his life cultivating. It is also said that the stories of his period as a slave that the younger brother told Ibsen served as inspiration for one of the most renowned plays that Henrik Ibsen would go on to write, namely "Per Gynt".

Huječek [hoo-ye-check; IPA: ɦujɛtʃɛk]
Culture: Bohemian
Etymology:
- ujec - maternal uncle, mother's brother
- the c->ček change makes this word a diminutive, so uječek means little/cute/dear maternal uncle
- the H in the beginning indicates where our ancestors originally lived - it's a typical feature of central Moravian dialects
Ancestors:
A distant relative (his children are my fifth cousins) is making a family tree as far back into history as possible and he's got to our relative Tomáš Ujíček [old spelling Thomas Ugiczek] (1704-1749) and our direct ancestor Petr Ujíček (1730-?) and his father Jan. However we cannot hope to get much further as during Thirty-Years War most of the register books were unfortunately destroyed. What we know now suggests that we have no famous ancestors, they were mostly village-craftsmen and farmers.
Origin:
There's no family legend how we got our name, so we can only guess. I imagine the first Ugiczek got his name because of the fact he was uncle of the priest who took care of the register book. Or he was so friendly and popular that all neighbours treated him like their own uncle. Or he had many sisters who had many children so he was literally the maternal uncle to the most of the village.
Present:
Our surname is not very common and is regrettably often corrupted. There are 54 people named Huječek or Huječková (female form) and 146 people called Hujíček or Hujíčková in the Czech Republic. Few Huječeks live also in Vienna and the USA.

Although there's no evidence of this surname in the Middle Age, it's not impossible for it to exist, so I hope you will let us earn some fame at least in CK2, when we have failed IRL so far ;-)
