So right now as Macedonia, I have manpower up the Wazoo, but I'm only producing 2.1 RP/month. My best researcher has a 10 in Finesse, and even with that it's taking years just to get up to Lev. 1.

Other than the early Civic National Idea that speeds conversion, is there any other way to speed up the process?

Get more provinces.

If you look at the ledger you'll find most empires don't make much in the way of research points early on. The only ones that do are Rome, Carthage, Egypt, and the Selucid Empire, and in the Pyrrhic timeframe, the Selucids are almost double that of Rome and Carthage.

The only thing they have going for them? They've got the most provinces by a longshot.

More provinces make it cost more RPs to advance though, so it kinda ends up six of one and a half-dozen of the other. I found most people tend to advance at a similar rate to start, but then the minors start advancing faster because they need so many less RPs.

As Carthage I took the citizen idea right at the start, and my research rate in 530 is usually just under 17, the seleucids trailing behind me at a measly 11.

Trade for grain for each of your province(more pops=more RP), and choose citizenship as a national idea. Also use the +25% research omen every time you can if you got 60%+ chance of succes.
Also, make sure your provinces civ rating is going up constantly.

As of 1.1, I'm pretty sure the larger your population, the more points you need to advance tech levels.

Zaku - have you done those things, and if so how did your research end up compared to the levels in the later start dates?

I have done this with Macedonia, and I had like 15-16RPs in 100years(I had all of the Greek peninsula+Illyria+some parts of the Balkans)

I don't know how is it compared to later, because my computer freezes if I try to select a different starting date. I was 3rd in the tech race, only Rome and Selecuid had more techs researched.

Can you remember what tech levels you had reached by 574 or whenever?

The game files have 'average years' for each nation to reach each tech which read something like this.

That suggests that you are "meant" to be at level 10 by 100 years in.

The demo started at the Second Punic War date and had level 7.

If you had reached level 7 by 100 years in then I would be pleasantly surprised!

I'm at 572 in that game, and I had lv5 in naval, civic, religious and lv6 land and building techs. I will start a new game soon, and try to focus on research.This was my first game, so I made a lot of mistakes. Now I won't go expanding the empire, I only take the greeks out(good RP there) and maybe I colonise 1-2 provinces in the north, to protect my capital from the barbie boys.
If you are interested I can post my tech level after 100 years.

I thing I found good to do was to take provinces with large populations, usually by annexing one province minors in Greece and then taking on Macedonia. Taking provinces makes the tech cost go higher so taking provinces with more citizens will help ease the effect of tech cost due to expansion.

Please let us know what tech levels you get to and when.

No-one is disagreeing about the mechanics of getting higher research rates. What we are concerned about is the global tech level.
