By default, Gestalt empires do not have Trade Value, and hence don't have to deal with Trade Protection and Piracy. Likely because of this, Gestalt starbase defense modules don't even have any trade protection value... which would fine, if not for the fact that other empires can route trade through your systems sometimes (usually because you have allowed them border access), leaving you with piracy and very little to do about it other than parking corvettes in the affected systems.

Why is this the way it is? If Gestalts are going to have to put up with this, at least give them trade route protection values on their starbases...

This should really be in "Suggestions". This is a problem that has bugged me for awhile, seems like as soon as I take over systems or an empire I start getting piracy in an empire that shouldn't have piracy, and like you said, no way to deal with it other than waste a fleet of corvettes.
