Nice to see you will have decent resources to deal with all the stuff going on.

Certainly other European nations won't regard such an expansion of the Wehrmacht as being threatening, will they? ;)

Hi Lordban! Just reading up on your "Nuts" AAR. Lovin' it. A worthy successor to the Risk AAR (my favorite all time humorous AAR, as Fire Warms, Advantages Without Obligations, and Iron Crosses Grow are some of my favorite serious "story" AAR's)

Moi? Threatening? Nonsense. My AAR doesn't have kittens, so nobody should be worried. :p

Anyone else reading this post.. if you don't recognize the above AAR's, you've GOTTA read: The German RISK AAR

Ok, it's HOI-1. Doesn't matter, it's still pee-your-pants, snort-an-entire-sandwich-through-your-nose funny. You've been WARNED

The "serious" AAR's don't translate as well, but if you're at all familiar with the game they reference (and possibly even if you're not), they're great reads.

1938 teaser

Hi all,

I've run the game up to Jan 1939 and have screenies for important events. Some interesting things happened, too. Unfortunately, I don't have time to post the details right now. I will try and post tonight (Friday) or at the latest tomorrow.

Good stuff, now I have to restart my game coz I have learned alot already from your AAR, thanks.

However, don't you think all those support brigades will seriously hamper you since they take so much damage in 1.4? Will probably will be out of org when your front brigades still have 60-70% org left. Or perhaps you have ways to use your army without this being a problem?

Good stuff so far.

Update explosion

Sorry guys. I had written a very long post, answering Spooky's questions and outlining everything that occurred in '38. Screenies and everything. Unfortunately, I finished writing it at 12:05 AM... and the servers were down for their nightly whatever-they-do. So the post went "poof". I don't have time tonight to re-create it. I promise it will be up Tuesday no later than 6PM Eastern time.

Lesson learned :eek:o

Hi Spooky, Wasa. Welcome aboard. In answer to your question, Spooky: I'm not certain what effect 1.4 will have. I've always fully brigaded my divisions in order to maximize the "punch" available per unit frontage. I'd also customize certain units for particular mission roles. For example, I might build a infantriekorps that I plan on using against fortifications like so:
3Inf1Art
3Inf1Art
3Inf1AT
3Inf1Eng
3Inf1Eng

...So this game and AAR are about what differences I notice during a run using the new patch and my old (maybe bad :D ) habits.

Next... run through to 1939

1938 in review

Finally, my long-promised actual update!!

Jan 1, 1938 (and every year) I go into the tech screen and see what is now within my 1 year time window. There's some good stuff there, notably the Engineering techs (which are much beefier under 1.4) and aircraft techs. They are added to the bottom of the research que.

Also on the first, the kindly people of Czechloslovakia donate their border fortress provinces to me. This gives a nice bump in materials, IC, and a bit of leadership at a cost of 5% dissent. Well, we know how to take care of that:

HoI3_45.jpg

I continue to add more trades with the USA. They're about halfway down the triangle now....

HoI3_49.jpg

By June I've completed Education research, giving me a nice bump in leadership. Since my officer percentage is dropping, it's a good time to reprioritize:

HoI3_54.jpg

Note that I've dropped my spy production to just enough to replace losses. I'm researching 18 techs, and I'm putting just enough into diplomacy to pay for my influencing of the USA. By these measures, I'm now creating 75 new officers per day for my war machine. Since the officer percentage directly effects combat and combat delay, I want this at or close to 200% if possible. I could easily ensure this by dropping my tech research numbers, but having 200% officers commanding troops with obsolete equipment isn't a great choice, either, so I'm striking what I hope seems a good balance.

Japan has been very successful in China. They annex Xibei San Ma in March and Nationalist China (!!) in September.

Also in September Portugal joins the Axis, and my first batch of 5 Medium Panzer divisions roll out. NOTE: September 1938 and I've only completed 25% of my initially intended medium tanks! I badly miscalculated somewhere, because at this rate (one batch of 5 about every 6-7 months) it will be Spring 1940 before they are completed. The fellows in the black trenchcoats will be... interviewing the person who drew up this production schedule! Oh, wait... that would be me.

I've played several games as Germany where I didn't activate the "Danzig or War" event, and every time, the Allies declare war on Germany no later than Jan 1940. Whoops! More on that in my next post. Back to the update stuff:

October 1938 and Czechloslovkia is fully absorbed into the Reich... again with the 5% dissent hit.

To compare:..... Jan1936.......Jan1937.......Jan1938.......Jan1939
Heer:
Infantry Divisions: 36................58...............86...............90
Light Tank Divisions.3.................5...............8.................10

The infantry, Light Panzer, Motorized, and Jaeger divisions are completed, the Mediums are at 25% as mentioned before. My Tac squadrons are completed (4 Luftflottes of 3Tac each), while I've completed 9.5 of my planned 20 JaegStaffel of 2Int each. Poor old Admiral Raeder is still looking at the same inventory he saw in 1937.

The trick to get all those divisions rolling off the lines isn't compatible with boosting the officer ratio: go Volunteer Army and build them as reserves. It's a complete exploit and it works brilliantly (like good exploits do).

You're still doing pretty well. I kinda wish I had as many divisions in my German AAR :p

Causing the US to join the Axis will make the war much more interesting. :) So are you going to activate the Danzig or War event?

Ah, but I AM building them as reserves. LOL. And they're still going to be late. My entire buildup has been Reservists. Well, not the Lufwaffe :D.
Which does mean I need to mobilize at least 2 months prior to the shooting starting if I want my units at full strength. So I either make sure the war starts when I want, or anticipate correctly when someone else will decide to attack me.

Causing the US to join the Axis will make the war much more interesting. :) So are you going to activate the Danzig or War event?

Honestly I don't anticipate being able to pull the US into the Axis. Their neutrality is so high that even if they are fully down in my corner, they still won't join. OTOH, they won't join the Allies, either. That's good enough for me. I can take England and the Sov's. Dealing with the US Navy while trying to support a 3000 mile amphibious attack? Nope, not if I can avoid it.

Danzig is a very good question. My original intention with this AAR was just to run up to the actual war start (planned for mid or late 1939) and then stop and do a "lessons learned" synopsis. An alternative would be to keep playing. If I do that, I'll wait until my third group of Panzers deploy (giving me 15 Medium tank divs), then activate Danzig. This would be around October '39. I would then continue the AAR to either a logical stopping point or an endgame. What do you, commenters & lurkers alike, think?

IC cost of reserve units is tied to your Conscription laws. The reserves you build at 75% IC cost under Three-Year-Draft could be built at 25% IC cost under Volunteer Army afair :)

Although I certainly appreciate the time you put into this, and it's a great read, I'd actually vote for ending it in October '39, this will make it clear that it's a focused on being a guide to the first few years. Maybe keep it going for 6 months or so after that so you can show whether your builds worked out as you hoped.

Doh

I didn't realize that IC costs were geared to that! I thought it was only the manpower costs. And the boost in leadership/officer production is the main reason I jump to 3-year draft ASAP. OTOH, I'm not really behind schedule because of IC, I'm behind because I waited until I had my 1936 Medium Tank techs completed before I started building. If I had started as soon as I learned the "prototype" Medium, I would be on schedule & refitting the older stuff now. Hmm... I am thinking I may need to "reboot" this AAR, using Volunteer Army and an earlier build.

Ok, plan "B"... or maybe I'm up to "E" by now: Run the current game up to Danzig ~October, 1939. End and summarize. Restart using the NEW New Order of Battle (NNoob?). Sound Ok? Let me know what you readAAR's think.

One Lurker´s Opinion

I really like your writing style. So I would like you to continue this AAR ´til maybe the start of Barbarossa. That way you could end it just when stuff is beginning to repeat itself too much (like fighting in Russia ;)).

Hi All

Wow! Thanks for all the compliments. Consensus seems to be to continue with the current game, but with a summary just before the shooting starts to show where I'm positioned, etc.

I have run the game up to December '39. Confession: I forgot to allow for the shortening timeframe for serial builds, so the last of my medium tank builds finished on Nov 30! :D. So, since I have my starting force in place, and given what I mentioned earlier about the Allies declaring war if I don't before January '40... Danzig will fire on December 4, 1939.

Before I go into the war reports, I will do a wrap up of what occurred from Jan-December. Unfortunately, I may not be able to post anything until Monday. So I guess you could call this a "cliffhanger"? :p
