All that is true, but I find that 1) It's much easier to get spies into France than England and 2) Raising France's threat slows Switzerland and Belgium from moving Allied (adjoining territories). So it's sort of a "supplement" to my UK threatmongering.

"But don't you plan on squashing Belgium anyway?" you say. Well, yes. But the fewer countries in the Allies early, the fewer countries are influencing yet more countries into the Allies. It's almost an exponential function if you think of it that way. Same reason I invite Italy, Japan, Hungary, Portugal, and anyone else I can get into the Axis ASAP. Once they join, they start influencing other countries toward me (Bulgaria, etc) at no cost to me.

I really appreciate the comments. Like I said earlier, I'm far from being an expert on the game. The more viewpoints, the better for everyone. That's kind of my goal with this AAR, is just to present another viewpoint.

Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.

Anyway, good update. :)

Yup, I was in the US Navy... on subs no less. But Germany is in the middle of Europe. They have lots of neighbors that they can play with, and Navy's are expensive in both tech and IC, so they're back-burnered for now.

Welcome to all of you others! I've pretty much got everything set up, so our next update we are actually going to see the clock move!!! Isn't it exciting?

Day 2+: Some changes

After letting the clock (finally!) move forward to Jan 2, we pause again to facilitate a few reorganizational and government changes:

HoI3_13.jpg

As you see, we dropped our Neutrality just enough to go to a 3-Year draft. So Herr Goebbels is appointed our new Security Minister. Leadership is the most important resource in the game (far more so than IC or money), in that without it, you can't research, trade, spy, initiate diplomatic proposals, or train officers. Anything you can do to maximize this is a good thing.

Next, we initiate a bunch of trades. Germany has a massive surplus of energy to start. We offer to sell some to Italy, Hungary, Japan, Bulgaria and Finland.

HoI3_14.jpg

On the 8th, 15th, and 22nd (1 week between each deal), buy 20 Metal and 10 Rare from the US. We're going to need more than that, but the amount of relationship boost you get with a country depends on the number of trades, rather than the amount. So we're going to have as many trades as possible with the US. Note that if your trade offer includes more than one type of item, the odds of them accepting are much better. And of course Germany can use a bunch of Rares and Metals, anyway.

HoI3_16.jpg

Some other changes in the next post....

Rhineland

January 5th, one of my reorganized infantry divisions reaches the Rhineland. I have moved my light panzer divisions into the same territory, which allows me to seperate out the three motorized brigades and combine them into a 3Mot division. I'm building an engineering brigade to join them, but the reason to do it now is because this fulfills the 40 division requirement for:

HoI3_15.jpg

This lowers our Neutrality, not to mention aggravating our French neighbors... both worthwhile endevours at any time.

Jaegers

Why do you add Art to your mountain divisions? I thought they lost all their terrain bonusses with an Art brigade attached to them

Hi Martijntien,

The way I understand it (if I'm wrong, someone please let me know!), Adding support brigades does reduce or eliminate Mountain troops' movement bonus in terrain. But that is offset by the increased combat effectiveness. Keep in mind that my Jaegers won't just be skiing the Alps & having snowball fights in Scandinavia... they're my general-purpose shock-troops. So I accept a movement penalty in order to gain combat power.

One possible alternative for 1.4: Since P-dox has significantly boosted Engineer's, I may change my Jaegers to 3Mtn1Eng x5 for a Jaegerkorps. The drawback to that idea, though is that ENG brigades consume fuel, unlike ART or AT

Hi JDMS,

Thanks for the compliment. I don't really feel I'm anywhere near an "expert". Most of the AAR's on this forum are for games run on "Very Hard" or "Insanely Impossible" level. That's one reason I'm doing this AAR, is to show the thoughts and ideas of a mere mortal. If one of the forum demi-gods happens to drop in and tell me "well, if you do this, these umpteen good things will happen", great! I'm always happy to learn more. If they drop in and go "hah! Noob is the right name for you!", I wouldn't be surprised, either. :p

Not ATM. When I get some spare IC, I usually build an airfield in Blumberg (1 territory behind French southern border territories), along with lvl2 AA.

Germany's inf is all 80%+, so nothing there.

Running the clock forward....

AKA "1936, the year in review" :)

Once you're past the first week or two of January, there's really not a whole lot going on for a while. Crank the speed up to maximum! You should top out your spies in your chosen... "tourist destinations" around March-April. Switch Austria and USA to Support our party. Switch France & England to Raise threat. Dial back your spy production to about 2-2.5 (tweak as needed to maintain numbers as some spies get caught each month) and put your new surplus into making new officers. Around April you start getting your first techs. Since the next level of these are 1938 techs & they automatically fall to the bottom of the que, I leave them there. By the time I've cycled through all 28 techs I'm researching, it will be at least Jan 1937. One year ahead I can live with. Of course, once you get all 4 1936 infantry techs (approx mid April), add Mountain Warfare & Arctic Warfare Equipment... for some reason I anticipate some cold weather in 1940 or 41.

HoI3_22.jpg

And of course, as soon as you complete the 1936 light tank techs, Medium Tank 1936 gets bumped to head of the line!

HoI3_23.jpg

Which leads to

HoI3_27.jpg

Note the date. I won't start building these yet, because 1) My IC is fully tasked for now and 2) These are really old tech. Immediately move all 4 Medium tank 1936 techs to priority 1.... through 4.

This post got a little screen-heavy. Continued in next post....

1936 Year in Review (continued)

Back again.

One of my previous posts referred to using spies for counter-espionage vs lowering neutrality....

HoI3_18.jpg

Note the number of spies caught, and the number still doing mischief. I want my production and research running flat out! That is why I always use counter-esp. :D

Not long after that spy screencap is when I maxed out my spies. I adjust my spy production to maintenance and start cranking out 50 officers per day:

HoI3_19.jpg

Italy joins the Axis on July 9. This is why I invite everyone as quickly as I can:

HoI3_25.jpg

Note that right after they join, Italy starts influencing my neighbors. That's officer or research points I don't have to spend on influence.

30 September, Anschluss of Austria. One (slight) downside to this is the 5% dissent hit. Remember how much I hate inefficiency??

HoI3_29.jpg

Once that's hammered back to zero, we can shift IC back to production.

One very nice thing about Austria is leadership bump they provide. That allows me to adjust my tech to research 18...

HoI3_30.jpg

Hungary finally joins the Axis on 22 December, 1936. And that brings us to the end of 1936.

To compare:..... Jan1936..........Jan1937
Heer:
Infantry Divisions: 36.........................58
Light Tank Divisions.3..........................5
Motorized Divisions..1..........................5

Kriegsmarine:

Light Cruisers........6............................6

Von Lippe,

I know you tried to hide this from me, but you've NOT succeeded!

How do you think you can get your spies to survive in England if you've failed at keeping this quiet???!!! :D

I haven't made it through all the updates yet, but I will! This is my first exposure to 1.4 (I'm busy on other things), which is the first of the patches I haven't been involved with.

I don't know the answer, and so I ask... Have you ever tried luring the Royal Navy into the Baltic, and THEN taking Denmark? What happens? Hmmm...

Looking forward to seeing more, my friend!

Visit from the master storyteller

Von Lippe,

Rensslaer

Hi Renss! Honored you dropped in. Hide? Me? Never. Some of us just don't have the name recognition that others (cough, cough) do. When you post something to one of your AAR's, notices pop up all over the place.

The 1.4 changes are a big reason I decided now was a good time for me to do a first AAR. I'm more a "nuts and bolts" type than a storyteller, so doing my type of AAR early in a new release will be both more interesting and more useful to people than, for example, a "This is a strategy for HOI 2" coming out now. Not that there's anything wrong with HOI2, or AAR's using that game!!!. Don't want to offend anyone. ;)

As for the RN in the Baltic... I accidently did this in one of my 1.3 games. It wasn't the entire RN, but it was 6 BB's and 2CV's plus other stuff. The results were, at best, mixed. You would think they'd have gone out of supply within 30 days. But it took me 8 months of using my Tac's in Naval bombing missions (no NAV's) to sink them all. And in the meantime, they sank everthing I tried to run through the Baltic, including the entire Kriegsmarine & Baltische Flotte! Overall, I think locking them in the Baltic is kind of like trapping a grizzly bear into a cave... while you're inside. Yes, the bear is trapped. No, he's not going to get out. No, you're not going to be very happy with the results, either. :p

1937... In 15 minutes or less

Well, 1937 just isn't that interesting a year. We build a whole bunch of stuff (summarized later). We researched a bunch of stuff (Infantry, Armor, and Arty techs)... and since the next generation was 1940 we stopped researching them for now. We started research on SpArt to be used with our Medium Panzer divisions. Since it's 1937, researching 1 year ahead isn't prohibitively expensive (and within my house rules), so

HoI3_37.jpg

I would normally jump Education right to the top, but I've got quite a few 1936 (and even a few 1918!!) techs finishing up first.

Oh! 1 interesting thing did happen... Japan Annexed Shangxi (Sept '37) and Communist China (Oct '37)! Seems this patch finally fixed the "Japan gets its collective arse kicked by a bunch of coolies with pitchforks" issue.

Started building my Jaeger / Special Forces / Spetznaz do-everything difficult divisions (Jaegers for short). Compromised between my "normal" layout for a korps: 3Mtn1Art, 3Mtn1Art, 3Mtn1At, 3Mtn1At, 3Mtn1Eng
and the idea of going all Engineer. I like the boosts that Eng brigades have received in 1.4, but I'm a bit concerned about all my Jaegers having fuel issues.
So my compromise: 3Mtn1Art, 3Mtn1Art, 3Mtn1At, 3Mtn1Eng, 3Mtn1Eng

Speaking of 1.4, one of the really handy changes is this new "tooltip" when you're deploying units:

Used to be you'd either have to know every unit's name, or just plop the new unit down in the general area then connect it to the CoC. This is great!

Well, at any rate, not a lot else happened.

To compare:..... Jan1936..........Jan1937..........Jan1938
Heer:
Infantry Divisions: 36....................58...............86
Light Tank Divisions.3.....................5...............8
Motorized Divisions..1.....................5...............16
Jaeger Divisions......0.....................0...............10

Luftwaffe:
Interceptor Sqds.....3......................8...............14
Tac Bomber Sqds....8......................9...............11

Kriegsmarine:
Battlecruisers........2......................2.....No change
Heavy Cruisers......2......................3
Light Cruisers........6......................6
Destroyer Sqdns....4......................5
Submarine Sqdns...2.....................3
Transport Flotillas..0.....................3

As you can see, I've almost completed my Infantry run (goal is 18 Korps = 90 divisions) and the light tank and motorized division (quanitity of 1 and 2, respectfully) portions of my panzerkorps. Which is good, because per my plan, I'm going to need a bunch of IC to build 20 Medium panzer divisions in around 18 months (in order to complete them by ~ mid-1939). None of that leisurely "2x10"..... we're going to be either 4||5 or maybe even 5||4. Ouch.
Good thing I planned for that! My last Tac will be completed in Jan 38, the last 4 infantry in Feb, and the light tanks and motorized in March. I will also be moving my Int builds to the bottom of the priority list. That should free up the IC needed for the Pzkw III's.

1938 in the next post.. and there's going to be a LOT of stuff going on

Nice to see you will have decent resources to deal with all the stuff going on.

Certainly other European nations won't regard such an expansion of the Wehrmacht as being threatening, will they? ;)
