I've started another thread to discuss Barbarossa and my plans - (as up to here I've had no trouble even with differences in the tutorial) - if anyone wants to give me some hints/tips/links, I'll use that thread and let this one go back to praising MisterBean for his wonderful tutorial - you've singlehandly IMHO kept this game alive for a lot of people cause even with HOI1/2, the learning curve and tutorials with the game totally sucked

I just gotta say, after two weeks and one restart (and a third I aborted when I realized I wasn't hopeless in the 2nd game - LOL) - that I achieved German Victory with 12/15 conditions - this tutorial made it possible and took the fear I was having over such an immense undertaking and broke it down into nice easy chunks -

every fight had it's own issues - I almost bit off more than I could chew eating the divisions in the swamps of Russia, and I somehow lucked out and found the UK army beating up my Italian ally instead of defending his home - (and it still really took landing craft to make it happen - transports were too slow) - but here we are - Axis World Domination

thanks to Misterbean for providing some other advice in my Barbarossa thread - now I get to spend hours obsessing over the ideal army composition and RandomHOI - LOL

Adding my thanks for this tutorial to the very long list. After playing HoI 1 & 2 extensively and knowing what it took to fully understand the game mechanics (I like to dig down somewhat to understand the core maths at play) I'd had HoI3 sitting dormant in my game library for years. Finally decided to take the plunge and this tutorial massively reduced the steep learning curve for me. Thank you.

I bought the game as a complete bundle and it included TFH. Trading seems much more difficult in that version than it was for FtM. Any hints on how to overcome the difficulty in trading with the Allies? The big three (France, UK, USA), won't do big trades in the beginning. Sometimes I can get them to do a handful of energy for about .5 money to start but certainly not trades of 50 energy for cash from the get go.

Yes, things have changed a lot. Try selling supplies (20 supplies each deal max)to the UK instead. Italy will still grab a lot of Energy. Hungary and Sweden should still be good. Look for some countries outside Europe. japan usually buys some stuff as well.
Italy can sell you rares, SU will still sell metal.

Yeah, you have to make a bit more of an effort now.

Playing a bundled, up to date HOI3. I've bumbled along following the tutorial as much as possible (lagging in resources, tech, and struggling to pound out division on time) but I won't be deterred!

However, I have hit a snag. It seems between your writing this, and me playing this version, many of the regions have been adjusted. I'm trying to prepare to march on Poland, but I can't follow what's going on with troop deployment because roughly half of the regions don't exist in my version. I can't make heads or tails of where the Panzerkorps are meant to be placed and where the infantry, and I've hit a wall that I can't even seem to bumble past without potentially making a mess of the entire offensive.

Any chance you can give at least a general idea of placement of types of divisions, so I can try and nut it out? Alternatively, a placement guide with the current region names would also be awesome.

Yeah, I know. This tutorial is, unfortunately, out of date. Too much has changed for it to be workable anymore. What you could do, of course, is go into the game files. There is a second exe file, that will launch FTM instead. This will hopefully be 3.05, the version under which the tutorial was written. That way, you can learn the game under the conditions for which this AAR was written.

The dotted arrows are infantry advances.
The full arrows are panzer/motorised advances.
The dotted circles are areas where we plan to encircle and divide the Polish.
The dotted line running north-south across Poland is as far as you should need to advance.

Please note that this is a mod, HPP, in 1936, so there may be some minor differences compared to the vanilla map.

I'll be honest, I didn't expect such a rapid reply on such an old thread.

I figure, at this point, I might as well give the invasion a whirl, and see how I go. You've given me the general strategy and some of the initial deployment pointers, so I have a fighting chance, I think :p

Worst comes to worst, I learn what I can from a few failed invasions, and then restart with an FtM setup. I've already learnt a lot, though, and interestingly, I think the earlier divergences from your tutorial were actually good, because they forced me to interpret purpose and priority in what you were instructing, and to understand the concepts themselves enough to improvise.

Now to try and do that with an actual invasion...

Well, I just managed to beat Poland, 9 Nov 1939. I started my campaign late (formally declared war on October 12, so that's, what, pretty much spot on four weeks?

I have to say, it was an interesting experience - I was floundering early on, but then I basically just tried to make circles around things and fill every spot on the front line with at least one unit, trying to position armour for deep strikes in and around enemy territory. That was when it started to click in my head. I got to the point where at least I could TELL when I was making less than ideal decision or movements, and could kind of sense what I should have done, which is streets ahead of where I was previously.

Now to see if I can get any further :p

That's the first step. Learning how to think for oneself does not come easy for anyone. Especially with the whole script laid out in front of you, like this. Later on, I will stop holding people's hands, so getting those early lessons about smart and dumb moves are very handy.
