misterbean, I also wanted to mention that I appreciate the fact that you've stayed with this forum in addition to creating it. It looks like about 7 months since you finished it, but you're still paying attention to comments/questions from those of us, like me, that came to it late.

sorry, gjflanker, I missed out there. yeah, well I like the way this has turned into a running course on "HOI3 101". As long as the mods don't complain, I don't see why I shouldn't help people out.

Case in Point: one-province nation has been excommunicated. Only ally is Brittany, who have a Royal Marriage with me (Austria). Two seconds later, I'm fighting Bohemia, Hungary, Brittany, Castille and ALL their vassals.
WTF JUST HAPPENED??????????

A bit late here, but you probably attacked someone in the Holy Roman Empire. That gives the Emperor (Bohemia, most likely) the option to intervene. From there, you got caught up in cascading alliances:

  • Brittany was called in by the OPM. I don't recall for sure (been a while since I played EU3), but a defensive call-to-arms might avoid the normal hit for royal-marriage war declarations.
  • Bohemia was probably the Holy Roman Emperor, as mentioned.
  • Bohemia likely had the alliance with Hungary and called them to arms. Even odds on whether it was Brittany or Bohemia that had the alliance with Castille.
  • Once Castille was in, their vassals will automatically join the war.

Yes, I'm reasonably sure this is correct. Must have been quite a surprise, eh, Misterbean? :D

So you've been trying out Divine Wind, yes? I tried it just briefly, and haven't really had time to get beyond familiarizing myself with the new concepts. I'm sure we could really use an updated Strategy Guide (the one I did only went up to HTTT), but with EU 4 coming out soon I'm sure it wouldn't be out beforehand.

 nice try, Renss.
Seriously, though. I'm hardly able to keep my tech up-to-date compared with the rest of Europe, let alone think about a guide of any sort.
Besides, I suspect the AI of cheating. Have you tried launching a quick invasion of Scotland with England? the ledger says they have 7 regiments. after a month or so, they have about 20 regiments. Highlanders coming down, along with war taxes, loans and massive mercenaries? Possible. Whenever I load a saved game as an AI nation, they typically are 50% above their support limit. Where do they find the money to do that and also research? My last try saw France with 90 regiments and 29 carracks in the early 1450s.

Long story short: I uninstalled the whole kit and kaboodle in a fit of rage.
Which lasted for about 3 days or so.
Then I reinstalled everything.
Man, those Paradox games are addictive!!!

Sounds like my experience with HOI3...:)

On another note, when you detail how to spread the leadership points, what are you aiming for (aside from research)? In other words, if you say put 5.3 points towards espionage, are you looking to create a certain number of spies each day; or likewise in leadership, a certain number of officers? Through trial an error I can keep my spies going, based on how many countries I'm trying to infiltrate and my leadership steady, but was wondering if you'd worked out the math, i.e. how many points towards LS to keep officer ratio constant or increasing, etc.

I know how many points I will need to keep research going just by counting the number of projects I have on the board. Experience has shown me that with just over 4 LS per day you can generate more spies than they can catch (usually). Officer ratio is simple math: the tooltip when hovering over it on the main map says exactly how many officers you have and how many you need. you just do the following:
#off needed - #off you have=#officers you need to train.
you divide that result through the number of days you have.
say you are 1500 officers short and you have 750 days. that means if you no longer build anything, you will need to raise 2 officers per day.

I was recommended this tutorial but I noticed now that the more I play the more I realize it's very difficult with TFH. I'm at a point where to produce more stuff and i'm already losing supply every day because of lack of IC.

Not to mention that the majority of trades listed here is impossible even at half those numbers

The game is indeed a bit harder in TFH but the principles are still the same.

exactly right. All the details have changed, making it impossible to follow the tutorial to the letter. I do think, however, that the large brush strokes remain the same. Regardless of what version you're playing, it is still Hearts of iron 3, and people with trouble getting the hang of things will still be able to learn a lot here (God, that sounded conceided coming from me).
For all the fine print, I happily refer you to the main forum.

They also seemed to have made changes to the infrastructure, when I got to the part of building lvl 10 of it on some provinces I noticed they already were maxed out.

although a small question, you mention a lot about buying rare / metals but never oil. Won't I have I have to trade for oil as well since it seems to rapidly decline?

Perhaps a more experienced player can give you more trustworthy information. But regarding to my experience so far: i always do. As much as i can afford. In my latest games i managed to enter war with roughly 20-30k crude, with a fuel stockpile of at least 60-70k. That's honestly the absolute minimum for me to enter war. I didn't manage to buy a lot of rares or oil from SU, so after DoW you have no other possibilities than conquer, conquer and conquer. I would always keep in mind the fuel supply for your mobile troops in SU. I usually tend to leave Romania outside the Axis. In case of running low fuel/crude because a failed "Sea lion" or lame Blitz for Paris/Norway/Balkan/whatever your might want to get their crude and strategic resource as a trade off for their support in war. Or just puppet them to sent you crude above 1000 in their stockpile.

Well, oil is of no use for you.
You need fuel. Since the game is totally ahistorical in terms of synthetic crude, you get more than enough from enemy stockpiles, to sustain till '44 (when you should've taken SOV already).
Unless you're planning something really ahistorical, you'll never need to buy any crude as Germany.

here's how the system works.
your crude oil is refined into fuel. when you don't have enough crude, energy is turned into crude. The exact details vary from version to version, but research will increase the ratio of both energy to crude and crude to fuel.
Now here's the thing: Germany is swimming in energy. Once the war starts, most of your trade avenues die up, leaving you with a ton of energy, above whatever you need to keep your factories running.
So like Shierholzer explained, oil and fuel are rarely a problem for Germany, unless your energy-producing provinces get bombed a lot.
What Germany doesn't have is enough metal or rares to even keep their peace-time ICE running at full tilt. During the first three years, you can and should get as much of both as you pssibly can. Once the war starts, you can no longer trade overseas and most European nations will become either a target or an enemy. The only one left to trade with who has enough metal and rares is the Soviet Union. Only problem there: they will be spamming factories and by early 1940 they typically will need almost all of their resources for themselves.
In other words: you need to have a large enough stock of both to keep you going in between looting defeated nations' stocks.

I had no idea that you could convert energy into the oil and that obviously changes everything. I guess I don't have to worry that much about my declining crude reserves.

Thanks for the help.

Also if you ever feel like updating this tutorial maybe it would be good enough to list at the end of each chapter approximately how much of an army you should have. Now with TFH I feel like I have to skip on a few of the "build xx" steps and I don't know exactly what to prioritize and if i'm still building enough stuff

It's not really down, it's just that GameFront isn't reachable from Brazil (and many other countries) for some reason.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/53659889/pi/Germany%20tutorial%20Take%202%20by%20Misterbean%20changed%20colors.rar
(That should work for you, however it could take a few minutes till it's available).

Thanks for the link, for some reason the GameFront download fails as soon as you hit download. Odd since I've downloaded tons of stuff from there in the past.
