Germany is bleeding me dry!

So I've run in to an interesting problem. I am playing as Japan on normal/normal Arma 1.3b. I puppeted Nationalist China and annexed the warlords. I have since been at war twice with the Soviet Union. The first time I made it to European Russia when Germany got Bitter Peace and robbed me of all my winnings! Then a year or so later I reinvaded and am now pushing towards Sverdlovsk from the south and just working on rounding up the last few Victory Points (Novosibirsk, another marshy one in North Siberia, etc.). None of this is the problem. My army kicks ass; I have great leaders; most of my troops have fantastic experience; all goes well against the Soviets.

The problem is that somehow I got myself in a trade agreement with Germany whereby I give them almost all of my rares in exchange for a bunch of oil. I have 100s of thousands of barrels of oil, I need not this trade. I have essentially no Rares. This lack of rares means that my economy is working at 15 actual IC out of 194 base IC. I cannot do anything! My consumer goods required level is at .85 and I am devoting 15 IC to consumer goods. Yet I still cannot raise any money! This means I cannot cancel my trade agreement with Germany! I don't know how this happened, I saved and reloaded once just because I had to (not to replay something, just because I had to quit for a while) and that's when I suddenly had no rares and Germany had this trade deal with me. How can I get rid of this horrible, Japan-killing trade agreement?

I swear, once this sorts itself out I'm going straight for Berlin, forget Pearl Harbor!

Reload as Germany and cancel the deal. Should do the trick

Hm, didn't know that canceling a trade agreement costs money.

You can either load as Germany and cancel the agreement, or trade some money from elsewhere.

Brilliant! Of course! How could I have never thought to reload as Germany? I've heard that will eff up my armies positioning, etc. Should I be worried?

EDIT: And yeah, it costs five dollars. That's how bad my economy is. No one in the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere can afford five measly dollars. Great job I've done liberating Asia .

As long as you don't unpaused the game you "should" be fine.

You could also edit the save game file, should be a pretty simple fix.

When loading as Germany, pause the game. Cancel the trade agreement, save (new filename, just to be sure!) and reload as Japan. Your armies should be the same as before, as the AI didn't have a chance to mess up your positions.

..Then give the remaining money to some minor in America or wherever if you feel you shouldn't have any money.

..There's a lot to be said against cheating, but those cheatcodes ARE one of the cleanest ways to fix things.

I usually cheat when I am a small country and big allies fuck around with my sliders. God I hate it when you wait all year to do one slider move, and then they slap you in the fact and switch it back.

Ah good point.

I always forget about the cheat coeds. I am not sure why it seems more OK to load as a different country, or edit the save game than to use the console cheats.

Anyway, it's still loop trap you're in. Save & reload will screw up your armies, even with no time elapse. If you feel guilty about the extra cash, you can diplomacy it to a neutral country. No nation says no to wad of cash.

Crazy situation you've got yourself in there! Due to it's rather unusual cycle of never been able to afford to cancel it, I think it's more than fair to use the money cheat and give the rest away afterwards.

The main problem I've got with reloading a game as someone else is that regardless of what happens to your armies, leaders will be assigned to all of your 1-division garrisons, which takes bloody ages to re-assign!

Thanks everyone, these are all great ideas. I think I might go with the cheat-and-be-generous scheme. Maybe I can set up a scholarship for underprivileged Japanese-Peruvians. Call it the Hirohito Scholarship Fund! Who knows, maybe someday a Japanese-Peruvian can even become the President of Peru .
