Playing a '36 campaign. Humans controlling UK, France, and Germany, with the idea that France will switch to the USA once Vichy occurs.

Everything goes historical until the Danzig event where Germany backs down. He said he wasn't ready...for Poland...

I was a bit upset, but nothing in our rules said Germany HAD to take the Danzig path, but is he really just screwing himself on this one? Are there advantages that Germany could possibly reap from staying peaceful a bit longer? I've informed him that the French player will have the opportunity to swtich to the US in the fall of 1940, whether Germany has gone to war or not. He seemed a big perturbed. Anyone else run into anything like this before?

Sounds like the German player did not plan his builds so that he would be ready to assualt Poland. I'm just guessing but I can't see any advantage to backing down, afterall the game is supposed to start then.

Yes, recently both Kingtiger and I ran into something similar.

I was/am playing Germany, King is USSR and the 3rd player is UK.

Well everything goes historically untill for some reason the UK player kicked Poland out of it's alliance. (This is a even stranger situation then what you described)

I was like "hmmmmmmm", and the Danzig or war date came and went with no event. So anyways, I turned on France and started the war. All kinds of crazy things ensued and Poland (and other countires) ended up asking ME if they could get into the Axis. I accepted, and next thing I know Poland declares war on the USSR and drags me into it! This is all like in November '39 or something.

Craziness, but its fun to sometimes play ahistorical games. Try it sometime.
