So i made it all the way to scandinavian emporer and Fylkor or whatever, but my religious authority promptly started to tank and is now super low. The issue is that my knucklehead vassals keep declaring holy wars they can't win and I can't join.

I understand I can't keep them from declaring wars, they're vikings and all that and peace just isn't their thing. But I don't see why I can't join the fun. I'm their leige lord and their religious head and they will win with me so what the heck?

Is there something I'm not seeing? Is there some way out of this trap?

thanks,
Smackamack

You can try weakening their targets. You can also declare your own holy war on someone who has been declared on by a vassal. Either they win on their own, or you win and their war becomes invalid

Yeap, you can raid their targets that make your army hostile to them, so you can destroy their forces and let your vassals finish them.

I have no idea. For some reason Paradox just made it that way. :( You can join vassals' foreign claim wars, but not foreign holy wars. Go figure!

The strategies for above for helping your vassals indirectly by raiding are very useful, though. :)

No!
Don't weaken their targets, your vassal will only grow stronger and stronger and declare more and more Holy Wars and annoy you by even more... (Threadlevel/defensive pacts should really work against vassals)

If you care about your Moral Authority, just raid temples. Every temple gives 1% of MA, a lost Holy war costs like 5. It also give lots of piety (and gold of course) which will also raise you MA (because you are the Fylkir, Head of Religion)

Thanks all for the advice. I am going to try the temple raiding trick. I have to raid anyway and I certainly don’t want my vassals piling up titles. I understand gavelkind can fix that but that’s a case of the cure being worse than the disease. Once you hit emperor gavalkind kinda sucks.

actually Gavelkind work better as Emperor than it does as King, because you usually don't hold 2 empire titles (or at least it's kinda avoidable) but it happens easily that you have 2 Kingdom titles

Raiding temples is the best way to keep the MA high. It's down by 45% here (30% Holy Wars, 10% Country Conquest, 5% Prepared Invasions) but still high thanks to 21% temples looted... and I haven't started doing it with passion yet :)

Let me know if you need some tips on how to become the salt-snake :-D

I don't see why this is a problem.

In my current playthrough Saxony was never conquered by Charlie and so grew and grew pushing all the way north through Sweden to Lapland before reforming the Germanic faith. At the same the Ummies took over Aquitaine and even Lotharingia, the Abbies never collapsed and North Africa was ruled by a dynasty that controlled everything from the Maghreb to Egypt.

I got so mad at the map that I played on observer mode for a hundred years before watching all the Muslim realms break up. I then decided to console in as the Catholic King of France of Brittany and do my best to restore Christendom to its former glory. England has formed and went Waldensian and the rest of Christendom has collapsed in to heresy and disunity.

I have waged and won two Holy Wars against the Fylkir and his evil henchman the King of Svithjod and am ready to help my true ally the King of Germany exterminate the heathen scum wherever they appear. After that we will wipe all the petty sheikdoms from Bremen to the Pyrenees and then push on for the Reconquista.

Meanwhile (and this is no joke), I have a surly, unruly Duke of Normandy who has a claim on England, maybe I will encirghae him to push it . . . ! :D
