hello everyone! if you have already read the language patch thread then you know about this already. i am going to translate all text files from german into english (or swedish). i will also translate the game manual. this will be a lot of work and paradox has discouraged my idea for the translation, but i am going to do it anyway. i need all the help i can get because i will most likely need a decompiler to find and decode the text files. so anyone willing to help me go ahead and post here or e-mail me at Stabsgefreiter@yahoo.com. my ICQ is 93704633. so please help me.

Unable to assist in any way sir, but wish you the best of luck, does this mean us English people would be able to buy the German release and still play ok assuimng Paradox don't release one for a while?

Ehhh, you do know that what you're writing you're going to do is illegal? Have you heard of something called 'copyright'? Why do you think almost no manuals are available for download (e.g. in electronic form)? That's because one of the primary tools against software piracy is the fact that when playing a strategy game you almost always need the manual (at least if you want to play against other humans) to figure out the more subtle parts of the game.

Think kdp is right, your biggest problem here are that you're planning to do this in the US where people get sued all the time. I don't think Paradox will let you decompile and distribute changed and recompiled files, and if they do you're prolly get sued by the english distibuter since this would be a threat to their market (not so big but it principles were talkin' here). And I've heard of some taskforces that searches for this kind of stuff for the goverments.

Translating the manual is hard labour, if you manage to do it well then you're up against the same problems as with the decompiled files.

What I think you can do is to translate any open txt files and distribute them, this is in a grey zone but it's probably legal in some way.

The best way to do this is together with Paradox, and if you're doin' this the illegal way, DON'T post it here if you don't want them all over the place.

I'm not any legal expert, this is an amateurs point of view

I understand you dersire to play this game as soon as possible, but if you are not 'endorsed' by Paradox in this venture, I don't know if its a good idea. Especially if it impacts an English release date!

A note for the ones that want's the beta, I'm not sure it's all english, it migt just be the dates, that i saw on some screen that still was swedish but then there might be more to that. But I do think that the beta would be much more fun to play compared to the German one, and my legal stuff was mostly hypothetic, but if someone did do some language patch including decompiling then a sue could drop down your mailbox. As for the open textfiles, we've been told that it's vey easy to change many options with them so, yeah it has to be Paradox meaning. It won't be like the mods for quake but thats not what we want, right.

I think that I am mis-interpreting your statement. But if I read it correctly,
does it mean that if I buy the German version, I can ask for or purchase the English translations from Paradox?

dang lots of posts since yesterday! well i appreciate all of your opinions but as a friend of a lawyer they would have no grounds to file a lawsuit unless their copyright specifically states that no unofficial patches could be released. otherwise we are free to do as we please with regards to the language patch. i do respect paradox so if they would turn my language patch into the official one, i would appreciate it. i do also respect everyone's opinion so i will make no comments on their posts. so sapura please present this idea of the language patch to paradox. thankyou for your time! oh and i want you to know, i just lost two orders of the game because of the replies to this topic.

Since I was the first to write about the copyright problem, I feel I must remove a little confusion about what I really meant:

It wasn't your plans for the game-files that made me write my earlier posting. It was your plan to translate the german manual into English that made me react. I've never, ever seen a manual (or book) without a copyright notice. Besides, if I were Paradox and somebody began talking about releasing a electronic version of the manual (in any language) I would react immediately! As I wrote in my first posting, when playing a strategy game it is normally the manual that ensures that people buys the game (e.g. to get the manual).

oh i see now!! well i was never planning on illegal distribution of the translated manual. i just want everyone that is as anxious as i am to be able to play the game effectively. i will not translate the manual if paradox does not want me to.

General* I'm sorry if my post made people to cancel the orders, that was not my purpouse, it was just meant as an informative post, not to discourage anyone or anything.

But I have to add something to kdp:s post. Usually you have to do some agreement when you load the program to your 'puter which usually includes decompiling, I don't know if EU uses that clause and if they do if there is some way around that caluse.
So no more legal stuff its boring and so...

As for language patches, it would really be great if you could have Paradox to make one or make yours official. I'll rather use an english version than a german one 'til i get my swedish one. And reading an manual in german is something that I don't look forward to, I mean sure pics can be nice but if you don't get why they are there and what they represent more exactley they are nothing but nice pics...

Once again I'm sorry General* (* is a joker to fill out the rest of the name =) ) if my posts gave any negative influences.

dont worry about it, we have several more orders. yes i wish that paradox would make there own patch that would make it a lot easier and they would not have to worry about making a english version. but just like any other company, they want to make money.

Dear Generalfeldmarschall and all Europa Universalis fans,

We are in negotiations with US and UK publishers at the moment and we deeply apologize for the delay with releasing the game in these countries. It is a frustrating time not getting your game out there and we are working around the clock to make this happen in a very close future.

However, the issue with releasing unofficial language patches is something we see as very seriously. Copyright text in Europa Universalis very clearly states that users are limited to do changes in the code or enclosed material. Changes to code are considered as cracking and we will not hesitate a second to take legal actions to anyone doing changes in our code. Manuals are also under the copyrights and may not be changed in any way.

I am strongly advicing you to wait until the game ships in your home countries.

Again, we thank you for your support of Europa Universalis and apprechiate the commitment you are showing to our game.
