However, I don´t like how the guy scares of the "casual gamer". It´s like a movie reviewer would say to his audience: "Hey...this game is too complex for you. Buy a ticket for the next Jackie Chan movie instead." Absurd. It´s like he is scared that his review will make someone buy the game and then be pissed at him because they find it too complex.

And, I also can´t understand why he complains about the graphics....they look great!

A lot of reviewers make the same mistake however. Since they don't understand, they think it is complicated (although in fact it is the reviewer's problem).

And yeah, the graphic looks nice and he gives only 6??? He must be expecting something like FPS.

Yeah. What is wrong with this guy? He is obviously using those FPS or other games as the "graphic" standard. Yet, for grand strategy games like Victoria, EU2, HoI, etc. that is unfair to judge it based on that.

But then again compared to strategy games as Medieval, SimCity4000 or even Civ3 Victoria does seem a bit pale. Not that graphics matter that much to me, but I'd say this reviewer was being quite honest to the general public about the graphics. Graphics aren't normally rated depending on their functionality, but on wow-factor.

Yeah, he is probably using a RTS game like Warcraft 3 or Empires: Dawn of the Modern World as a comparison.

Official Statement

Hi to you all, guys.

I'm the reviewer who wrote the article at withinGames. Just a few comments:

1. Graphics

Sure the Graphics look great for a strategy game of that type but the 6 for graphics is a result of our official rating system. Here's a brief translation:

6 means: some flaws but generally above average
7 would mean: good, very solid but nothing spectacular

I think 6 or seven would serve well. I`ve decided to give Vicky a 6 due to my "Crown of the North"-Review. CotN has better and more colorful graphics so I can't give Vicky the same grade - this would make my own ratings somewhat unregular

2. Comparison to other games:

WithinGames reviews all kind of games. As a reviewer of a general gaming site, I have to look at the average reader and can't write in favor of one party - neither hardcore gamers nor casual ones. I have to keep a good balancing (just like the developers should do in their products) in my whole work. If you look at the whole big picture of today's gaming industry, I can't rate Vicky higher, even if I personally would appreciate higher ratings for all Paradox Games because of my personal prefernce..

Regards from Germany,

Alex

P.S. hope to see you all sometimes at WithinGames (we also feature an international/English language discussion forum...

I'm glad there are still reviewers like this around! As can be seen in the review he does tell Vic is complex and realistic, but might be a tad difficult to master for people who aren't familiar with strategy games. Giving points like he did is his suggestion of how an average player might rate it, his job isn't to educate people to buy the most complex games. Naturally a reviewer should neither rate well the newest hype RTS that's paid him a trip to LA. His job is to be honest.

Perhaps there could have been two sets of grades, one for the average and one for the presumed "hard core" player. That's pretty common practice in Pelit-magazine I read.

Possession of their own country which is semi-autonomous? Damn, and I thought things were complicated enough as they where!

Of course, I guess you meant Norway ;)

Thanks a bunch for stopping by and explaining your reasoning. I'm not sure I agree fully with your methods (hardcore/regular in particular...IMO there's a quite few more types out there, but that’s in some ways a matter of definition), but I understand that's how you operate and that you have to go by it. It sure is a nice thing to see a reviewer who cares about what he writes enough to comment on it in other forums.

Hi, and welcome, Alex. And sorry for my harsh words..:eek:o

Thank you for explaining the article!
Anyway the bit about "I can't rate Vicky higher, even if I personally would appreciate higher ratings for all Paradox Games because of my personal prefernce.." would have been a nice comment to end your article with.
