German Reich - Isn't there a better name?

Scroll down a bit to the 3rd paragraph under the section named "Outstanding German Debt", and you'll see that Der Spiegel is calling Nazi Germany the "German Reich" in the article. Yep, that's right, a German news magazine has translated their own article to call the Nazi regime the German Reich. Not "Third Reich", not "Nazi Germany", not the "German Empire", but German Reich.

I like it, that's what I changed it to in HOI3, as well as France to "French Republic", Italy to "Kingdom of Italy", Japan to "Empire of Japan", USA to "United States", Republican Spain to "Spanish Republic", and Nationalist Spain to "Spanish State".

I would bet $5.00 if you went up to 100 college age kids in the U.S. and ask them 'What was the Third Reich?' less than half could tell you. Now how many of them are in the planned demographic for HOI IV I don't know. I do think the planned Demographic for HOI IV is different the the Demographic for HoI3.

Oh, come on, I'll take that bet. I knew that Third Reich was another term for Nazi Germany when I was seven (and I'm not bragging about my history cred or anything; I never had any interest in history until I took Latin high school).

Well, but after the "German Reich" losses control and turns into a puppet of Soviet Union, how it will be called in game? Maybe the political system has effect on how a country is called. We will see that maybe in a patch, a DLC or a mod.

I have known people who would rather look at a blank wall than play a Paradox strategy. So You and the rest of the people are a cut above those who are not here. What I am not sure of is the planed demographic for HOI IV. It is not the core wargame group.

I think you are not aware that these TV segments are heavily biased. They go around, find 2 stupid people inside of 1000, and boom! You got yourself a TV segment.

So just looked up an old fashioned book English dictionary (pre internet age) and Reich is in it. So there is no need to translate it into to English because Reich is a English word :rofl:

If anything it is a Tautology. As the dictionary defines Reich as the German states of 1. The holy roman empire 2. Bismark's empire, pre WW1 3. German after WW1 both the Weimer Republic or Nazi German.

I rather like German Reich for Germany.

As for others:
United Kingdom for the UK (don't know what they currently have)
United States for the USA (the country is large enough to fit that after all - never understood why it was USA in Vicky 2 when they went with United Kingdom for the UK)

I'd also argue for a French Republic that can be distinguished from Vichy France (assuming the implement anything resembling that)

Back on topic. I think that the devs are trying to be careful in how they name the country, but what about "Nazi Gemany" or "Third Reich"? Those are the typical names used to refer to fascist Germany during the post-Weimar Republic years in English.

Or just leave it:
"During this period, and well into the succeeding Nazi era, the official name of the state was German Reich (Deutsches Reich), which continued on from the pre-1918 Imperial period."

Because in HoI3, "USA" on the map is horribly stretched out and "United States" looks far nicer. Also, "United Kingdom" isnt called "UK" either.

Damn, I knew it would be something like that... Federal Republic of Germany is a legal succesor, continuation, of Germany that fought in WWII (which in turn was a continuation of Weimar Republic)why try to disasociate it from contemporary Germany? We all know how different they are, It's like trying to disasociate Mao Zedong's PRC (e.g. cultural revolution) from current PRC. I have yet to meet a German who would even think about attempting to disasociate his country from the things it did in the past, I don't think that they would shun responsibility. Nazis didn't come from space in awesome flying saucers, they were Germans chosen by Germans in a fully democratic elections. Hitler himself was insistent on seizing power legally after his Beer Hall Putsch failed. As for the names, Reichtangle is awesome but if you want vicious sounding name then I would call it Tausendjaehriges Reich. Third Reich is not a good pick since Nazis themselves banned its use. Why not keep it as it was in previous HoI, Germany, it's neutral, accurate, and doesn't sound silly.

BTW, nations in HoI4 have an ideology-name, so Germany is only the German Reich while it's fascist.
