I've been staring at the FAQ 1936 Major Force Comparison charts for several days now and still can't figure out why the German navy is listed as having 0 destroyers. I'm reasonably certain they had a few destroyers deployed as of then, enough for at least one group.

I've tried searching the threads and could not find an answer to this. Is this accurate or an error? Thanks.

Don't think so, and I would be in a position to know. ;)

One thing to note as well is that the forces comparison chart does not include units under construction at the start of the scenario. Maybe a future section to add?

... or units being upgraded?

But yes, that would make an excellent addition. :)

After reviewing the postings and a little further web research, it looks like the destroyers Germany deployed in January, 1936 would be the old Versailles Treaty restricted destroyers, which would be about half the size of the destroyer class (Type 34) built by the Kreigsmarine in the late 1930s. So I can see why the older ships would be excluded, since they were presumably of little military value in a WWII campaign. As ZheShiWO suggested, the first of the modern Type 34s were operational starting in 1937.

So I think I see now why the Germans have zero destroyers listed. :)

In 1934 and 1937 the US using the lex and saratoga not only performed highly successful training raids on the panama canal but also launched suprise attacks on pearl harbour with complete victory.

Funny how some ppl never learn.

Does this include captured ones? I know that they had at least some captured in Norway.

German made use of the following captured destroyers:

Gerard Callenburg (Dutch)
Tjerk Hidders (Dutch)
Van Galen(Dutch)
L'Opiniâtre (French)
L'Aventurier (French)
Cyclone (French)
Vasilefs Georgios(Greece)

and
Zerstörer Norwegen 4 & 5 of the improved Sleipner class

Incomplete upon capture they were named ZN4 & 5, both ships took a furthur 3 years to near completion before both being sunk by sabotage.

What about the Narvik class? I thought that they were captured Norwegian ones. Were they German from start?

THe "Narvik" class was actually the German 1936A type DD designed to carry 5-150mm guns. Conways All the Worlds Warships 1922-1946 attributes the name to the fact that these boats (Z23-Z30) included those that formed the 8th Destroyer Flotilla (Narvik) between Dec 1940 and August 1944.

These were poor vessels when carrying the 97 ton twin 150mm turret forward. The gun had seperate powder and shell as opposed to the reliable 127mm and the turret weight made these boats very poor sea boats.

Interesting Note: Z29 was disposed of after the war by scuttling her in the Skagerrak with a load of german poison gas ammunition. Sucks to be the fisherman that snags that boat.
