I think he means that Byzantium should be purple ;) ... though a tad confusing with the double negative statement :p

Why is Byzantium always represented as purple? I know the colour itself is purple, but much of the byzantine heraldry is blue or red and yellow, at least from my broken memory. I seem to recall a few images of kataphraktos with purple incorporated in them but that might be a TW reference. May I suggest actual byzantium as the colour, or tyrian purple.

In any case, it's great to hear the beta team is at work "refining" the map and the developers are open to feedback. Simply awesome.

Now wasn't Imperial purple, the dye made from mollusks, almost red? I believe it was called Tyrian purple

Hmm, wiki seems to say the colour should be a real violet colour, as I thought was the common understanding.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_purple

Even though it does show the Justinian pic. Exposure to air and time has changed the colours somewhat?

edit: Never mind. Looks like a relatively unique feature of Imperial purple is that the colour gains intensity over time. So giving the deep red, evolved from a very violet starting material. Who'd have thought I trained as an organic chemist! :p

The byzantine emperor was called pophyrogenitus, "born in the purple". He could only legitimately claim the throne if he was born in the Purple Room of the palace in Constantinople.

You might want to read the Wiki-article again, since what you are saying is not entirely correct. :)

Huh? It's what I've read in a book some time ago, so my mind might play tricks on me. Or Wikipedia. :)

EDIT: I don't see how the wiki article contradicts me on that: "This designation's most distinctive condition was that the child be born in the "Πορφύρα" (Porphýra, the Purple or Porphyry Chamber, a pavilion of the Great Palace of Constantinople): no child born anywhere else could legitimately be called Porphyrogénnētos"

Purple is the colour of the emperor.

Also, in addition to some of the emperors' fine tunics being purple, some of their boots were also distinctively purple and a symbol of their imperial power (seeing as pure purple could not be said to have been cheap to dye clothes in): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buskin

Notably the last Emperor, Constantine XI, was said to have been found among the other Constantinoplian bodies because of his unique purple boots. Not that this was true (afaik the most prevailing theory is that he was never seperated and singled out from the other bodies), but it does give an indication that the Emperor was known, even by the Turks and other makers of folklore, to have been recognizable by his wearing of purple boots before Constantiople was conquered.

So in short: Purple as the color for Byzantium/ERE is justified and makes them unique and is not just a fad.

But that doesn't say anything about them being the only ones to legitimatly claim the Byzantine throne. It just states that only those people could be called 'born in purple'.

Insofar as I recall, being "born in the purple" was supposed to strengthen a claim to the throne, as compared against the claims of who were not "born in the purple," but the status of porphyrogennetos was not by any means the sole legitimating factor.

As far as I'm aware, all organic dyies gain intensity over time with exposure to sunlight and air. On the contrary, synthetic dyies loose intensity. That's why it is so weird for us today that Medieval peasants actually wore bright coloured clothing, as shown in so, so, so many Medieval images. Because our dyes loose colour in time, but their actually got deeper.

So, Tyrian purple was violet-purple at first and then became deep red, and it's impossible to make proper distinction.

But sorry, that's too off-topic. I might have some complains about the Spanish county layouts, because in CK1 they were absolutely arbitrary and unreal, especially in Castille. I will have to wait to see closer screenies to judge the stuff properly.

Seconded. Byzantium can't not be purple, it's just wrong! You wouldn't make England yellow or France green, would you?

England obviously supposed to be red, and france blue. What is your prefered color for Byzantium?

I'd have thought it quite obvious from what I said back there that I'm firmly in the 'Purple for BYZ' camp. Personally I'd go for pretty much the same shade used in EU3. The purple Naples use is a bit overwhelming, the purples Milan and Lithuania use aren't really purple enough, the purple BYZ use seems about right to me ;)

Glad you agree that England should be red though. From screenies I've seen so far it's looking a bit too pinkish atm though, maybe redden it up a bit before launch? Still much better than the weird orange from CK1 though...

I thought the colour actually fit England fairly well. The pink I've seen though in newer screenshots is very odd. In Victoria 2, Great Britain is this deep shade of red instead of pink (as well in HOI3 IIRC), but in CKII England is pink?

Not played Vicky 2 in a while, but I quite like the red England use in EU3. Even better would be a really bold, bright red, like Coca-Cola cans, Royal Mail vans or, of course, the background of the traditional CoA. Not pinky-red, not orangey-red, but RED, proper loud and proud red like a poppyfield in full bloom, the blood of the French knights left on the field of Agincourt, or the spanked arse of a flirty strumpet in a harbourside pub :D
