I browsed over the new CK2 Screenshots at Gamespot and seen something peculiar in image 21:

The Greek island of Chios is portrayed in its correct position but it has 'Samos' written all over it. Samos is another, smaller island in the south. Perhaps the developers should rename the Samos province to 'Chios' ? I reckon Chios played a greater historic role during the era (the Genovese had it for a long time).

Similarly, the Greek island of Cephalonia has 'Corfu' written all over it. Simultaneously, Corfu island can be seen above it, connected with the Epieros province. Perhaps the province should be renamed for the larger island of Cephalonia or both islands be in the same provinve labelled 'Ionian Islands' ? (All Ionian Islands had the same fate through most of their history anyways), or, a more 'bold' move, make 2 provinces, Corfu and Cephalonia, so one can have a 'Duchy of the Ionian Islands'??

605285_20110607_screen011.jpg

I added the link. The words 'Samos' and 'Corfu' are in small lettering and need good vision to discern!

Perhaps they went with the more well-known names, or are trying to avoid confusion with other provinces elsewhere on the map.

Uhm, Yes the thing seems to need to be adjusted, Cefalonia is named Corfù, but the true Corfu seems to be part of Epieros, possible? Or maybe the Two Island are the same region, named Corfù becouse is the most famous, and name appear on Cefalonia for space reason? Mmm, no... seems that Corfù is connected to Epieros, a thing like this cause confusion some confusion eheh...

I see also the problem of Samo, i hope in the beta process the thing could be solved.

Province Setup for the Lands of the Bohemian Crown

It's not entirely geographical but I thought this is a quite good place to talk about the province setup too.

We have all seen that in recent screenshots there are new provinces and the new province layout in Western Europe (France, England) and I suppose that this process of province improving will continue towards east. So I think it's right time to throw my two cents - I prepared my proposal for the Lands of the Bohemian Crown.

So now it looks like that:
605285_20110816_screen005.jpg
The whole country looks very strange and not very historical.

But according to the recent video the names of provinces are changed from CKI:
ckbohe.png
You can see Domažlice, Litoměřice, Boleslav, Praha, Plzeň, Hradec, Znojmo, Brno and Olomouc - much better choice of names.

And here's the proposal based on historical division of the Czech lands:
bohemianprovinces2.jpg
Kingdom of Bohemia:
a) Duchy of Bohemia: Praha (1), Chrudim or Kutná Hora (2), Hradec (3), Litoměřice (4), Plzeň (5), Bechyně or Budějovice (6)
b) Margraviate of Moravia: Znojmo (7), Brno (8), Přerov (9), Olomouc (10)

Duchy of Silesia (part of Kingdom of Poland): Opole (11), Wrocław (12), Świdnica (13), Głogów (14)

Lusatia (I dont know - which duchy it should be in?): Budyšin or Upper Lusatia (15), Chóśebuz or Lower Lusatia (16)
[and probably should be sorbian/slavic culture, not german as seen in the picture above]
Eger (17) - only if you like tiny provinces

Green dotted lines mark provinces that could be merged.
Cyan lines are rivers shown in the original map - Vltava, Labe and Odra
Please note that the Kingdom of Bohemia gets no extra provinces (if you merge Chrudim (2) and Hradec (3)).

So what do you say?

Good points, Poland and Baltics are both ridiciolously wrong as well. Unfortunately, this quote from Johan may indicate that not all areas of the map would be reworked like England and France:

Provinces in CK2 do not really follow any "historical borders", as borders back then were not exactly 100% accurate, and we wanted to keep the vaguenes there.

Yes, and i think also that for major thing like change so numerous borders, at this stage of development is difficult simply becouse probably the team is focused to improve the gameplay and the AI.

Yeah, but it would be a weird inconsistency to have historically correct France and England, while province setup elsewhere just hurts the eyes from countless mistakes. You know, paradox crew keeps talking about CK2 being their 'most polished game ever'. ;)

In theory changing borders should be trivial (or near-trivial) because this is a Clausewitz-engine game. The hardest part is probably keeping the character database up to date, so that everyone whose home moves with a border-change is where they're supposed to be.

The major I have with threads like this is that almost all of the suggestions involve adding one or two new provinces, which would add up to 100-200 map-wide, and adding 200 provinces is gonna reduce performance by a whole lot. The Bohemian above, for example, suggested one more province for Moravia, two for Silesia, and one for Lusatia. Which means 4 of his 17 provinces (almost 25%, which would be 250 new provinces map-wide) are new.

Totally agree - that would be a Paradox situation ;-) (just joking, love PI games)

The major I have with threads like this is that almost all of the suggestions involve adding one or two new provinces, which would add up to 100-200 map-wide, and adding 200 provinces is gonna reduce performance by a whole lot. You are right that 25% increase could hit performance hard and thats why I included those green dotted borders indicating that those provinces could be merge without hurting accuracy too much. In current CKII map there are 9 provinces of the Bohemian Kingdom (I think Znojmo/Morava province in CKI was part of Austria, but I am not sure as I played mostly CKDVIP; it looks now that devs decided to move this province into Moravian Duchy, at least we can think so because of name and culture of it) and if Chrudim (2) and Hradec (3) are merged it is 9 again (not counting Eger, that is only for hardliners :-D). And Lusatia could be one province too, that leaves only Silesia with minimum of 3 provinces after the merge. It means that from 12 provinces we made 13 and thats OK in my opinion. And if we do not want to add any provinces to Silesia at all, we can merge 12, 13 and 14 into Lower Silesia but keep outer borders from that picture.

I dont insist on adding more provinces (I think baronies will help a lot too), I mainly hope to get more pleasing borders and names of provinces. If you are right about easy map modding in Clausewitz engine, I am sure that we can expect a map mod improving this very soon.

If the whole maps gets changed from CK1 one to something different as somebody mentioned is happening, that would be nice. Take Mappa Regnorum mod for CK1 as a base to build upon, Paradox ;)

My best guess is that you won't be able to use that info.

In CK1 Southslavic was the only Southslavic culture. It also included Romanians and Albanians. Too much political BS (aka: copiously detailed reports in the bug report forums), and since culture has no impact on actual gameplay they punted on the issue.

But the people who do the inevitable CK2: Improvement Pack will probably be able to use it.
