by the time you start the purge, all those pops are chained and locked behind plasma equivalent of barbwire, so a few toasters with railguns are able to suppress any unrest.

Yes, the Bosch Paperclip Manufactory has already provided the entire universe with enough paperclips! Better yet, they spawned in the next game as a Fallen Machine Empire.

And when doing a purge, you control the local satellites. You have TOTAL AIR SUPREMACY. Anyone who sets foot outside gets vaporized by a killsat. Or turned into paperclips by a processing drone. Or scooped into the rendering vats, where their struggles will help agitate the resulting slurry.

Alternatively, since you've seized the computer systems that run the place, everyone just finds the local supermarkets have locked and their gardens have no water supply...

Well, genocides do usually have more victims than they have ones doing the killing...

On the other hand you can't just count the few ones doing the deed, that is basically inconsequential. I have never read about such things in history to those extents where it was not supported at least to some extent by the majority of the population as a whole if not just passively.

Given the options in such scenarios the defiance from the mightiest pacifist would become pretty severe, I promise you that.

But Stellaris is hardly known for its realistic tendencies in terms of sociological, economical or even military concepts. It is after all a game where mechanics and fun comes first and everything else second.

what how is that possible, 3k pop??

Pops you are purging, devouring, etc. don't take up housing or amenities. The crime/stability problems they cause made it easier to just resettle them all onto one planet. It also has one of the most insane benefits of the new population system: you get the full value of the total population being devoured but the size only goes down 1 pop at a time.

I know it's too much on the nose and probably in violation of some ethic code, but the answer to your question is in history books, chapter 'concentration camps', plus 'genocide in XX century'.
On a more grim and serious note - the first thing to happen in genocide (from what I read, thank god not experienced) is total disintegration of human personality, his will and self-awareness. So by the time the victims are escorted to their death, sometimes a totally apparent one - they don't resist. Because to resist, there must be a willingness to resist and to live. Things that are very deliberately chipped away in the most horrible and efficient methods known to, well, the phrase goes 'to mankind' but to call these acts as resembling anything human would be a grave mistake.

I'll do you one better: Thirty pops purged on a primitive homeworld with exactly zero of my own Orc Purifier pops on their planet. I wasn't paying too much attention so I didn't realize until too late that I'd have to actually colonize the thing again if I didn't get a pop planetside.

I'm not going to multi-quote here, but I think the system is too simple to be much fun and too unrealistic to be immersive.

You do not need hunter-killer drones. It's enough that a few calculators are doing taxes while something is killing off the population. You should have to deploy hunter-killer drones somehow.

You do not organize people into chemical processing facilities or whatever. I don't mean in a big micro sense, but a decision or a building representing that would be something. Also I'd like it if it was something you had strong incentive to do, something that you'd have to do to the scale of population so that it would speed up the destruction of large populations. It's too gamey to have one death world that produces way, way more than a crummy Dyson Sphere for the rest of the game (though at least that world will have warrior drones).

Just have it a bit more complex and non-trivial. Your army could figure into it, as armies have very little gameplay anyway.

With my assimilators, I don't purge until after assimilation. But they do get quite unhappy during the assimilation process itself, so I'm going off that.

And I don't know if I *have* to, or what would happen if I didn't do it, but I do usually deploy hunter-killers and soldiers during the aforementioned Assimilation stage to try and keep the stability/deviancy under control.

What should happen if I don't, is an insurgent revolt of some kind; and if I don't have enough actual armies on the planet to fight them off, they should just throw me off the planet. But I don't know if that does actually happen, I've just always proceeded as if it was a possibility.

Well... I do, but that's because they're fully integrated drones by the time I get to that stage :p I can't speak for how other empires would do it though. OTOH...

...I don't really do chemical processing for 'speeding up the destruction.' If I wanted to just eliminate the population fast I'd go with extermination; the chemical processing is when I want the energy as well, and then I want to milk it for as long as I can.
