Just some background on me: I've been playing awhile but haven't tried to make an AAR before this. Just figured out how to make screenshots a second ago, so I don't have any visual data of most of these events.. I tried, though. Chapter two will have screenshots.

The Merchant Wars - a Genoa AAR

Chapter 1: War for the East

October 14th 1399

Genoa has been building its colonial, merchant, and military fleets for years. Their merchants are some of the most powerful in the world. As the newly elected Doge Pignolo takes the scene, he prepares to bring Genoa into the limelight; to bolster its colonies in the Bulkans, spread Catholicism to them, and to control the world economic scene.

Pignolo begins his plan by first declaring war with Karaman, to take advantage of its war with the Ottoman Empire. The fleets and armies are sent, and the City of Karaman captured. The Timurid Empire aids us by taking Karaman's eastern province, and we annex them; November 1450.

Immediately afterward, Pignolo allies himself with Venzenia. One might wonder why two rival Doges would form a close-knit alliance. Simple: they both share a fondness for meat pies.

The First Italian Schism

Our righteous fellow Italians, the Umbrians, revolt from the terrible Apostasy of Pope Benedictuos. As they establish their new nation, the Papal State declares war on them; in an illegal attempt to cease the Umbrian homeland. Venezia responds to this call by declaring war. Milan and Austria join the Papal State in their folly. Savoy comes to our aid, striking at the Milano homeland.

Our Genoanese fleet and troops sail to the coast of Aquila where we acquire military access and assault Austria.

We also aid Venzenia in liberating Umbria from the Papal captures. As we free it, we quickly turn our attentions to Sicily who has declared war on Naples. This war was with Naples was very short, but caused great friction between Genoa and Venzenia. As Genoanese forces storm Sicily and take several provinces, Venzenia quickly offers peace for the Island of Malta, leaving Genoa empty handed. Looking for financial gains, Pignolo turns his eyes to the east.

The Greek-Genoan Conflict

Pignolo, seeing an opportunity in the Byzantine Empire declares war. They quickly round to Morea and lay seige. The city is captured, as well as Constantinople. The Greeks had been fighting with the Turks, severely weakening them. The fleets set sight upon the allies of Byzantine, Georgia. Quickly taking Imereti from that Timurid ravaged land.

Venezia's Folly
A new Doge is elected after the death of Pignolo. He reigned 36 long years. In 1436, Doge Spinolo is elected.

Looking back to the western front, it seems Venezia has gotten itself into another war with Sicily. This time they are allied with Naples and the Papal State. As we begin assaulting Venzenia almost immediately cedes a Athens to Sicily. They also let the Papal sponsored rebels in Umbria to take the province, aswell as The Knights to take Malta. Genoa will have none of this.

3rd War with Sicily
We declare war on The Knights to draw out Sicily and Naples (Naples is allied to them). Quickly storming Messina and Palermo, the cities are taken. We hold off the Neapolitan advance while the invasion is prepared. Two regiments cross into Calabria, one crossing the land bridge, another landing from the boats. The Neapolitan army is decimated. We quickly rally with Venzenia and capture all of Naples.

We are awarded Abruzzi while Venzenia is given Umbria and Albania. Malta was earlier taken by the Ottomans, so we annexed The Knights in Rhodes. Messina and Athens are taken from Sicily.

Unsettling Peace
We lay low while reducing reputation and build our economy.

Austria gives us an electorate position, so we nominate France along with their vassal, Province. That should make them happy.

Castille offers an alliance, and we accept. Yes! Spain. They'll really watch out backs, right?

Wrong: War with the Arab World

Up until this point, the Ottomans and I were friends. Sure, sometimes they bought into the propaganda spreading through Europe about us. They could be shy. But we enjoyed a nice peace, and military access.

Thanks alot, Castille. Almost immediately after we ally, they declare war on The Golden Horde. I think, "well, they have a lot of boats, tons of troops; I'm sure they can take the Horde. I'll just attrition them out and harass them from sea".

Wrong again. Castile didn't move a finger. We're stuck here getting bombarded by stacks of 20k units in Azov and Imereti, and they're way over in Iberia twittering. Driving while texting is ILLEGAL in Genoa! The Barbarian Spaniards will pay.

A long standoff ensues, as we guerrilla from one sea province to another seiging back our land.

Turks, Franks, Sicilians and Serbs! Oh My! - Err, yeah...
Doge Lazlo (sp?) Sale is elected

We declare war on Georgia to get some extra economy boost. Naples joins in, as does Timurid who had been warning us for a good 20 years.

As this is happening, Bosnian rebels take over Croatia. Biggest Bosnia I've ever seen. Soon afterward, probably due to my war with GH, The Ottomans attack. Luckily, France is the emperor.

The Ottomans take the city of Pignolo in the Karaman, as well as Athens and Morea. Attrition is high. Popular support for the war is down. Riots ensue in Genoa and parts of Corisca. Georgia and Timurid keep taking Imereti but rebels keep taking it back. The whole country is a mess.

Doge Sale decides to stick it out in Naples. After a long, bitter war, Naples cedes Calabria and Apolonia. We've conquered the Italian Boot! too bad about the rest of the country...

After years of fighting the English in the Netherlands, France finall decides to help.

Ottoman Destruction
After the war with Naples, the troops return home to liberate Genoa from Lobotomist (or was it something else...?) Heretical oppression.

France assaults Bosnia, overwhelming the whole country. They progress rapidly into Serbia and Macedonia. We return to Turkey and retake Karaman. We also siege other cities, while mistakenly ignoring Greek revolutionaries in Rhodes. Greece is founded in Rhodes, but destroyed within the year and annexed by Genoa.

By this time, all of Asia Minor is swarming with rebels. About 5 different factions are battling it out Caucasian Iberia and the Balkans was in a similar fashion before France killed everything moving over there.

We make peace with the Ottomans. Genoa gets Konya and the Ottomans release Byzantium. 1461.

1466, the current year

EU3_1.jpg

Our land holding. The eastern world is still swamped with rebels. Next we aim to have Venzenia, Napoli, Rome, and Georgia.

The Ottomans are holding up remarkably well. Rebels aren't doing much, even though the Bulkans are at 30% revolt risk. We just had a one year war with them, and French holdouts from the last war helped us. Still recovering from WE and rebel attacks.

The Timurids look on the verge of collapse. They had a ton of rebels in the last war, and their skirmishes with Georgian rebels seem to have taken their toll.

Nice war with Naples, good expansion. Georgia must be a pain to hold onto. First comment, hmmm everybody must be checking out the HTTT AAR's

Yeah, Imereti gets bi-monthly raids from Georgian rebels who often saturate the southern Horde provinces. Its not too hard to hold onto in war, but I'm sure its going to be a pain when I get it cored.

Chapter 2: Greca Conquista

Taming of Georgia
We declare war on Georgia, our long held desire for the Kartli province now being realised. Naples backs them up, and we split our forces to take them both.

EU3_3.jpg

They are quickly destroyed and agree to annexation.

After a few successive waves of rebels throughout the Mediterranean coast, we are once again secure. However, Ligura accepts Lobotomism and our nation is ostracised.

Spreading the Faith

EU3_12.jpg

Lorenzo Giustinlani is elected Doge of Genoa. His first order of business is to expand his territory into the Heathen lands. He quickly joins Spain in a war against the Ottomans. He it is who is famously quoted as saying "To bring the light of the true faith to the barbarian lands... Where profitable."

With the war under way, Giustinlani's men spread out to conquer Turkey. They have some success as they conquer the provinces adjacent to Karaman. The Ottoman Horde attacks the captured provinces, but Giustinlani's generals skillfully evade them and take more provinces.

The Ottomans are temporarily distracted by the Spanish, but we face a new, stranger threat.

EU3_13.jpg

Nogai?! I've never seen them this far west before. The troops are separated, and Giustanlani's generals figure that a few regiments can take some eastern Barbarians. They're wrong. Our regiment is driven back.

With the forces of Al Jalayrids and Nogai in the area, and Spain picking up all the territory, Giustanlani figures it would be best to peace out for now.

The False Empire

EU3_14.jpg

Giustanlani decides it has been too long that the apostate Empire, Byzantium, Muslim Rome, has been allowed to continue their reign in the Balkans. An invasion is planned, war declared. The Muslims are quickly devoted to the sword and their provinces captured in quick succession.

They are totally annexed, but keep their only Sunni province.

EU3_15.jpg

Conversion
We set out to convert all the heretics we recently acquired domain over. Only the province of Konya (Sunni) remains. Gianpiero della Torre is elected Doge.

Chapter 3: Colonizing the World

Sicilian Conquest
We accept the Quest For the New World idea.
EU3_22.jpg

We decide to declare war on Sicily, inciting the wrath of Milan. Luckily, we are allied with France.
EU3_23.jpg

We immediately conquered the rest of Sicily and annexed them. Aquileia was next, and we annex their last province, Frauli.

France quickly sweeps over Milan, wiping out their army. They then sue for peace, a minor amount of ducats. We begin taking back Milan's provinces.

The Reformation Strikes

Before we can sue for peace, we learn of a new, fanatic group that has taken over in Karaman. These extremists seek to draw true believers away from the glorious Genoan faith, maliciously using studies of the Bible to sway the plebs.

We quickly adopt several apocrypha books from a traveling Swedish priest, who also informs of a righteous Catholic tradition he calls "Fondue Friday". Our local churches start weekly Bible studies and introduce the practice of Fondue Friday. This should turn the righteous Genoans away from Germanic heathenism.

EU3_26.jpg

QftNW
Named for our Great Leader of decades ago, the Galley Sale' is commission. Domenico Negrone is at the helm. He sails off to find riches in Africa.
EU3_27.jpg

He discovers the Gianpiero [Canary] island chain, named for the current Great Leader, Gianpiero della Torre. A colony is founded.

EU3_28.jpg

Milan and More colonizing

Milan excepts peace. We take several of their provinces. The province of Lorenzi is founded in Africa [Rio de Oro]; this province will be the new capital of Africa, its city being Africhini.
EU3_28.jpg

We feel we are glorious enough that these surrounding provinces should belong to us. Giovanni Battista Ceba becomes Doge. He does nothing remarkable, so an island chain is named after him. Four years later, Camillo Brignole becomes Doge. 11 years of colonizing later, and Luigi Adorno becomes Doge (waiting for rep to go down).
EU3_31.jpg

Eastern and Italian Conquests

Bendetto Imperiale becomes Doge in 1523. Taking advantage of a Spanish invasion of the Ottoman "Empire" he joins the war, in order to draw Qara Qoyonula (sp) into battle. We take several provinces from Qara Qoyonula and Antalia from the Ottomans.
EU3_43.jpg

We fortify and Catholicise the Azerbaijani badlands. We also conquer Siena and Tuscany. Our hundred-year alliance with Venezia is broken in the conflict.
Pagano Vivaldi becomes Doge.
EU3_47.jpg

The New World and other colonies

The long known Brazilian coastline is finally colonized.

Chapter 4: Jerusalem

The Mamelukite War

New doge Barnaba Campi's first order of business is to start war with the Mameluke Empire. They are already embroiled in a war with most of Turkey; their ally Oman having an active rule in that campaign, oddly.

EU3_53.jpg

Our armies land in Diametria and annihilate a large Muslim infantry division. They 'white peace' with the Turkish Emirates.

EU3_55.jpg

We extend our land holdings on the Egyptian coast. Taking Diametria, Gaza, and Delta. Khalil Yalbay I engages the Genoanese infantry in several fierce battles, but is pushed back each time.

EU3_59.jpg

Giovanni Davide Pignolo is elected Doge at the death of his predecessor (all mentioned Doges rule until death. Its an Electoral Merchant Despotism.)

Castille declares war on France. We have to join our loyal ally, so we must end the Mamelukite war ASAP, before Iberian ships surround us.

EU3_63.jpg

Here's what the front over there looks like. Portugal inherited the rest of Aragon, or conquered it. Not sure.

EU3_64.jpg

We accept peace for Judea, Delta, Gaza, and Tabouk. Forgot about Diametria, but atleast it split the Mamelukes into two.

EU3_66.jpg

Our next idea is Shrewd Commerce practice. Venezenia declares a suicidal war on us. We take Naxos from them and peace out.

EU3_69.jpg

As the rest of Europe is swamped by Heathens, our holy Catholic lands remain unblemished. We gain favor in the eyes of the Papacy. The Pope really liked the Fondue Friday idea and decided to implement it throughout Christendom.

EU3_73.jpg

Catholic Caucas Iberia

EU3_74.jpg

Pietro Senarega is the new Doge of Genoa. Grano Costa and the rest of Italian Africa is growing nicely. It later becomes self sustaining.

EU3_75.jpg

We declare war on the Golden Horde, but it wasn't very well planned out. But we're reinforcing, taking Northern Caucas Iberia, and making a ton of reinforcements.

Chapter 5: Expanding Caucus, etc

We quickly recruit many new regiments and send 18000 new men to the Crimean front. France has already stopped in and they've manage to conquer a province before getting wiped out. The Armata Di Gaza reinforces the French holdouts while a smaller regiment takes back Azov.

EU3_79.jpg

We've started conquering Azerbaijan but turned our attention northward at the advancing Nogai and other mongols. France has sent another 8k units by sea and they start going to town on the Horde's provinces.

EU3_81.jpg

The Battle of Sarai marks a major turning point in the war. By this time we've made peace with the Azerbaijani nation. While Sarai came at great human cost, the moral of the Horde was shattered from here on out. Their country is set on a downward spiral.

EU3_85.jpg

We make a deal with our Muslim neighbors. The Golden Horde will cede Alania, Kouban, Georgia, and Lugansk. Baluchistan will release Kokkand even though we have no idea where either are exactly located.

EU3_89.jpg

We declare war on the Ottomans who are allied with Al Jalayirids and Mali. They are quickly decimated and we annex or take large portions from them.
