Just some background on me: I've been playing awhile but haven't tried to make an AAR before this. Just figured out how to make screenshots a second ago, so I don't have any visual data of most of these events.. I tried, though. Chapter two will have screenshots.
The Merchant Wars - a Genoa AAR
Chapter 1: War for the East
October 14th 1399
Genoa has been building its colonial, merchant, and military fleets for years. Their merchants are some of the most powerful in the world. As the newly elected Doge Pignolo takes the scene, he prepares to bring Genoa into the limelight; to bolster its colonies in the Bulkans, spread Catholicism to them, and to control the world economic scene.
Pignolo begins his plan by first declaring war with Karaman, to take advantage of its war with the Ottoman Empire. The fleets and armies are sent, and the City of Karaman captured. The Timurid Empire aids us by taking Karaman's eastern province, and we annex them; November 1450.
Immediately afterward, Pignolo allies himself with Venzenia. One might wonder why two rival Doges would form a close-knit alliance. Simple: they both share a fondness for meat pies.
The First Italian Schism
Our righteous fellow Italians, the Umbrians, revolt from the terrible Apostasy of Pope Benedictuos. As they establish their new nation, the Papal State declares war on them; in an illegal attempt to cease the Umbrian homeland. Venezia responds to this call by declaring war. Milan and Austria join the Papal State in their folly. Savoy comes to our aid, striking at the Milano homeland.
Our Genoanese fleet and troops sail to the coast of Aquila where we acquire military access and assault Austria.
We also aid Venzenia in liberating Umbria from the Papal captures. As we free it, we quickly turn our attentions to Sicily who has declared war on Naples. This war was with Naples was very short, but caused great friction between Genoa and Venzenia. As Genoanese forces storm Sicily and take several provinces, Venzenia quickly offers peace for the Island of Malta, leaving Genoa empty handed. Looking for financial gains, Pignolo turns his eyes to the east.
The Greek-Genoan Conflict
Pignolo, seeing an opportunity in the Byzantine Empire declares war. They quickly round to Morea and lay seige. The city is captured, as well as Constantinople. The Greeks had been fighting with the Turks, severely weakening them. The fleets set sight upon the allies of Byzantine, Georgia. Quickly taking Imereti from that Timurid ravaged land.
Venezia's Folly
A new Doge is elected after the death of Pignolo. He reigned 36 long years. In 1436, Doge Spinolo is elected.
Looking back to the western front, it seems Venezia has gotten itself into another war with Sicily. This time they are allied with Naples and the Papal State. As we begin assaulting Venzenia almost immediately cedes a Athens to Sicily. They also let the Papal sponsored rebels in Umbria to take the province, aswell as The Knights to take Malta. Genoa will have none of this.
3rd War with Sicily
We declare war on The Knights to draw out Sicily and Naples (Naples is allied to them). Quickly storming Messina and Palermo, the cities are taken. We hold off the Neapolitan advance while the invasion is prepared. Two regiments cross into Calabria, one crossing the land bridge, another landing from the boats. The Neapolitan army is decimated. We quickly rally with Venzenia and capture all of Naples.
We are awarded Abruzzi while Venzenia is given Umbria and Albania. Malta was earlier taken by the Ottomans, so we annexed The Knights in Rhodes. Messina and Athens are taken from Sicily.
Unsettling Peace
We lay low while reducing reputation and build our economy.
Austria gives us an electorate position, so we nominate France along with their vassal, Province. That should make them happy.
Castille offers an alliance, and we accept. Yes! Spain. They'll really watch out backs, right?
Wrong: War with the Arab World
Up until this point, the Ottomans and I were friends. Sure, sometimes they bought into the propaganda spreading through Europe about us. They could be shy. But we enjoyed a nice peace, and military access.
Thanks alot, Castille. Almost immediately after we ally, they declare war on The Golden Horde. I think, "well, they have a lot of boats, tons of troops; I'm sure they can take the Horde. I'll just attrition them out and harass them from sea".
Wrong again. Castile didn't move a finger. We're stuck here getting bombarded by stacks of 20k units in Azov and Imereti, and they're way over in Iberia twittering. Driving while texting is ILLEGAL in Genoa! The Barbarian Spaniards will pay.
A long standoff ensues, as we guerrilla from one sea province to another seiging back our land.
Turks, Franks, Sicilians and Serbs! Oh My! - Err, yeah...
Doge Lazlo (sp?) Sale is elected
We declare war on Georgia to get some extra economy boost. Naples joins in, as does Timurid who had been warning us for a good 20 years.
As this is happening, Bosnian rebels take over Croatia. Biggest Bosnia I've ever seen. Soon afterward, probably due to my war with GH, The Ottomans attack. Luckily, France is the emperor.
The Ottomans take the city of Pignolo in the Karaman, as well as Athens and Morea. Attrition is high. Popular support for the war is down. Riots ensue in Genoa and parts of Corisca. Georgia and Timurid keep taking Imereti but rebels keep taking it back. The whole country is a mess.
Doge Sale decides to stick it out in Naples. After a long, bitter war, Naples cedes Calabria and Apolonia. We've conquered the Italian Boot! too bad about the rest of the country...
After years of fighting the English in the Netherlands, France finall decides to help.
Ottoman Destruction
After the war with Naples, the troops return home to liberate Genoa from Lobotomist (or was it something else...?) Heretical oppression.
France assaults Bosnia, overwhelming the whole country. They progress rapidly into Serbia and Macedonia. We return to Turkey and retake Karaman. We also siege other cities, while mistakenly ignoring Greek revolutionaries in Rhodes. Greece is founded in Rhodes, but destroyed within the year and annexed by Genoa.
By this time, all of Asia Minor is swarming with rebels. About 5 different factions are battling it out Caucasian Iberia and the Balkans was in a similar fashion before France killed everything moving over there.
We make peace with the Ottomans. Genoa gets Konya and the Ottomans release Byzantium. 1461.
1466, the current year
Our land holding. The eastern world is still swamped with rebels. Next we aim to have Venzenia, Napoli, Rome, and Georgia.
The Ottomans are holding up remarkably well. Rebels aren't doing much, even though the Bulkans are at 30% revolt risk. We just had a one year war with them, and French holdouts from the last war helped us. Still recovering from WE and rebel attacks.
The Timurids look on the verge of collapse. They had a ton of rebels in the last war, and their skirmishes with Georgian rebels seem to have taken their toll.
