Corrected for you :)
And then France gets a mission to conquer one of your provinces (bonus points if it's something like an Indian province so far away that they can't even core it), declares -200 relations, and annexes everything they can get their dirty paws on, while refusing to just take the province they want, even for free.

You can easily prevent that from happening until you are strong enough to take them.

I wasn't aware that I could prevent the AI from taking missions now, especially given that it seems to take them at random with no regard for the political effects those missions may have.

You can prevent them from getting specific missions cause some missions need specific trigger con conditions like the france mission for genoa. So if france is not a neighbour of genoa they wont get the mission and that is something you can influence pretty easily.

Gotcha, tiptoe around France because once you get a border, no matter your prior relations, France gets a mission to annex everything you have and all prior diplomacy will instantly become moot.

The complaint here is not "Genoa is doomed", it's "The AI is completely arbitrary when it comes to choosing missions".

There is an easy solution to that.

Does anyone know if France gets the Genoa mission if you vassalize the country between Genoa and France?

Ironically, after you as Savoy steamrolled Genoa.

Well, yeah. ^_^

I never let France annex Provence (been allies since the beginning and dragged in Austria/Castile whenever France attacked). They've been spanked the entire game to not even be a real problem. You could do the same with Genoa.

I'm sure others could do it better than me. I made plenty of mistakes in this Savoy game, but i'm just a scrub player. ;)

Only if you didn't use your time until then even somewhat effectively. I played a Genoa game where twice they took the mission for genoa, cancelled our alliance, went hostile with -200 relations, and didn't attack.

Having 70k mercs sitting around and 100k+ CN vassal troops does wonders for scaring off the AI.

Let's all agree that it's normally not a game ender but the AI for choosing it's missions is horrible. They're regularly killing of their last (important) ally by choosing these kinds of missions, it's not just France. Playing as Genoa I've seen both France and Austria cancel our alliance and getting steamrolled right after that, because I was a huge deterrent for their enemies.

genoa fleeing to america as merchant republic, colonizing panama and making a landconnected genoa that spans entire northern and southern america without colonial nations forming.

Don't even have to conquer sevilla or antwerp then. Steer it all to chesapeake, including conquering any and all provinces that can feed into panama.

Should work, right?
