I always thought that it's kind of strange that a child can be labelled as a genius (or imbecile, etc.) just upon birth. Such a thing can normally be observed after a couple of years at the very least (let alone that the current system can also lead to some gamey tactics).

So, I suggest to make genetic traits "hidden" until the child is around 6 years old. This would be both more realistic and would face the players with more strategical choices. The genetic trait would already be there from birth as it is now, but the icon trait itself would be "greyed out", leaving only its outline visible, so that the player would only know that there's a genetic trait to be unveiled in some years... which could be great or very nasty, though.

This should apply to some genetics traits only (lisp, dwarf etc. should always be visible from birth; and ill and sickly too, I guess). However, genius, quick, slow, imbecile and most probably even attractive (and strong?) should be concealed until a later age.

Thoughts?

Thank you, people - now let's hope this subforum is read enough by the devs, and that this suggestion makes it into WoL :) .

Also, agreed about the "attractive" trait, although I think it would be simpler for the devs to add just one "milestone" at which some traits reveal themselves (instead of two or more). If they could do that without problems, however, then I'd say that "attractive" could get visible only at 14 or maybe 16 years (to coincide with marrying age).

BUT. Maybe not six but three years of age. Genius will actually manifest itself before six years of age (e.g. in knowing how to read by three or four), as will even a milder variety like Quick (e.g. learning to read by five), possibly also Slow . Attractive or Ugly is trickier, but there are hints.

+1, great idea etc etc,BUT

How about simply adding two new (hardcoded) variables to all traits - age_appearing and age_removing. These would be self explanatory and would allow extreme customization of traits and genetic variations. Off hand I could think of dozens of applications such as Genius appearing only after age 6, Lustful/Drunkard/Wroth etc between ages 16-21 only (terrible teens), and any other variation you can imagine (a late blooming Genius anyone ?)

Combined with the full suite of coding options it would also allow all sorts of customized inheritable traits such as Cancerous (appears at a randomized point after age 45?), Diabetic (only appears if character becomes Gluttonous and or Drunkard etc).

Again,this would require a hardcode change to traits to allow them to appear/disappear, once implemented though it would be easy to update existing traits as most would by default appear at birth and last for life (although I do like the idea of all traits starting to fade away from age 50 or so . . .

I just finished my own very silly (and very juvenile) first trait mod (hint - it involves distinguishing females by the size of a certain piece of their anatomy) and realised that by making it birth triggered that I would get 2 year olds having the trait - kind of icky if not just plain wrong !

I still have to implement it, but my solution is going to be to make it silent event triggered at (say) age 13-16 with a base factor equal to the genetic base chance (ie 2%), plus a massive bonus based on whether or not the mother has the trait - same net effect as birth but no more Dolly Parton four year olds ! :eek:hmy:
